Great thread. Why any one would want to change the factory colour is beyond me. Something that I have said many times myself. It's been 5 different colours in its life. I would love to get some more of the history of the car but I've lost contact with the p/o and I think he was glad that it was off his hands... because well... it was a neglected wreck destined for the scrap yard.🤣

Best of luck with the new career and well done for taking the step. I too changed 2 years ago and it was the best thing I've ever done.
Also, that mk2 will be stunning when complete. So very jealous.

Thanks for the support matey  Glad it worked out for ya! Tiz encouraging. Today I've been doing one of the more less favourable aspects of restoration work.. Scraping the remainder the underseal off.. Oh it isn't rust free haha. Only surface rust mind nothing frightening. A very tedious and tiresome job though that most of us have had to do at one time or another. But anyway pics. Love the contrast between dirty chassis leg and shiny painted inner wheel arch on the last picture.

The beige sealer VW used is unbelievably stubborn on mine, it took me hours to scrape as much off with a chisel as i could before using a clean up disc to remove what was left.
What did you use to do yours?

Just read this thread from start to finish; wow! The quality of the work and pure dedication is unbelievable, can't wait to see it in paint, great colour too!

Gofasterpinch - pretty much the same method. Heat gun and scraper. Shoulders were killing at the end of the day. Least I had the benefit of a ramp though! But they definitely weren't shy with the underseal it was over an inch thick in some places, both a blessing and a curse really.
Lewi Davison - Thanks persevering with it mate it is motivating to hear as motivation has been lacking lately. Still a long way to go though.

I took 17kgs of factory underseal and sound deadening off of my mk1. I don't know if I could do it again, and I just know once I attack the floor of my mk2 it's gonna be the same as yours....
Keep it up.

Fortunately for me I got to use one of their ramps but sometimes I wish i was on my back as the prospect of standing up with your back arched and shoulders above your head all day scraping and wiping is about as attractive as a spat-out-chip. 17kg jesus. don't forget a decent respirator when your using the heat gun as them underseal fumes are nasty.

Yup, I was determined to get it bare before I sent it for media blasting. Lucky for me I had built a rotisserie and did it all standing up. Still hateful work though. Keep up the good work.

Well the decision has been made to put the mk2 (Ellen) into storage. This way i can save up and have them finish the body work and paint off in one go instead of paying in dribs and drabs and its a big pressue off me given recent events. This means I have money again!...... no wait... hang on.... nah lets be honest, I'll buy lots of tools and car parts with the money i save 😁 Calipers rebuilt, the kjet system refurbished a new interior etc and i can refurbish the chassis parts at home too. I also get to dissect the original engine which I've been wanting to do for ages. So a morning of faffing and stress gets me a safely stored mk2 golf for £112 a month which i think is a great price. Considering you need to get through 3 locked gates to get to it and the place has 24h security. I cant help but feel sorry for the thing though. At least shes in good company with a Dodge Charger only 6 feet away.

Already bought the stuff I'm using to refurbish the subframe, wishbones and rear beam. Will most likely have them all blasted first though.

Well its begun already. Engine hoist with load leveller and stand bought from SGS engineering. The gentleman in the picture is my grandad. A man who lives for mechanical engineering in all its forms. Hes built model steam trains/boats, mechanical clocks, maintained his own and the neighbours cars just for fun and that was in his retirement years. He's 92 now and I firmly believe that his unwillingness to 'accept' old age is the main reason hes still going strong. He hates 'being idle' to use his words, oh he was in the lancashire fusiliers in WW2 as well. Definitely one of the main inspirations to me and has a lot to with encouraging me to 'do it yourself'.

I thought I would ask for a bit of advice. I have put a fair few thousand to get the car to where it is now and I what prompted me to put the shell in storage is when I asked the guys how much it would take to get the car in paint from where it is now. The original plan was for them to do the bodywork and paint so then I could build it up at home. They have always been very reluctant to give me a final price but I always paid them on time and in the correct amount so when I believe I was less likely to be scared off but when they said it would take another 8k to get it in paint I just couldnt't justify it. If I was mega rich and It was going to sit in my converted barn or personal car collection museum (some people who have used that company have done just that with their cars) then maybe I could spend that but this is a car that is going to be used. So thats what I am doing now, in storage until I find another paint/bodyshop that isn't charging ridiculous money. So people who have had cars resprayed etc how much would you say is a fair price for a good job?

£8k to take the car from where it is now to complete the paint is very strong money - to do it properly there is circa £1500 in paint & materials and about £2.5k in labour - you would certainly get a very good job for circa £4k (ish) - real world prices & guaranteed workmanship - nothing hidden - it's what I do day in day out - sure there will be loads of outfits that can blow it over for £1500 / £2k but you get what you pay for - the small one / two man operations without large overheads and guaranteed work is where you need to look and the ones that are really good at what they do are always busy and have decent lead times of several months. Let me know if you would like to see some of my current / previous work - no obligation / no pressure - advice comes free and I throw the tea & biscuits in - Chris
