I hope that this is retro enough - she is 16 years old after all. After 18 months or so contemplating a Boxster and then buying a restoration project 944 and being scared of the amount of work involved, I have finally bought a 986S. Viola as she is now affectionatly known became my car on Saturday 15th Oct. A rare colour apparently only 1 of 12 cars produced and the first owner was Porsche GB themselves. We share the same birthday 1st March, but she was born in 2000 and me 40 years ago. Collection was an adventure as I took my wife and children with me to Lincoln after school/work on Friday night. We left home in Marlborough at 18:30 and drove in the wifes Audi A6 oil burner all the way to Leicester Forest services on the M1. We stopped for a well deserved Pappa Johns pizza. We finally arrived at Lincoln Premier inn at 21:30 and settled down for a well deserved rest. Following a grand all you can eat breakfast, we explored Lincoln. My children loved Steep Hill, the Cathedral and the castle. Following lunch we went over to sellers place. He had kindly left the Boxster in full visability to assist us in finding them. We had a good chat and then organised bank transfer. The drive back home was great, the car feels very tight, not 16 years old at all. My wife and I were split up after another break at Leicester Forest services. She went on the M69 and i stayed on the M1. We made this mistake as I got stuck behind a horse box of the way out of the services. We called each other (hands free of course) and agreed to meet at home. We arrived home some 6 hours after we left the sellers house. But what a drive. I stepped out of the car fresh and still beaming. The car is fantastic and we averaged 30 mph. The hood was down as we waved to the seller, but we had to close up due to torrential rain later. So the car is now mine and at home. She is currently in my heated garage having a well deserved rest. I have plumbed in my CTec battery conditioning device to keep the battery in good condition whilst I arrange tax and insurance (I had single day insurance to ge the car home). Only a single picture to share at this time.

These threads do not help with my temptation to put the M3 up on Readers Rides...
OTOH that looks lovely and a great colour too!
What plans do you have in store for the beast?

Thanks chaps - I need to get to know her first - Since buying her on Saturday I ahvent had time to do anything except hoover ot the drivers side footwell (stones from my trainers in the services car park) and connect the Ctek battery conditioner.
The previous owner (from Boxanet) is a scholar and a gent, he has sent me a list of known issues that I need to deal with. Nothing major, just minor annoyances, so this will be a start.
Compared to my previous Porsches - this is a modern and very capable car.

Opened this thread thinking it can't be as awesome as the 944... Then I saw it looks like a rather special one!
I do like the boxster and have been tempted by one many times, however the S is just about on par with my weekend car at the moment, and if I am to go through the agro of buying and selling I would like a power increase to come with it.
I do like the colour and look forward to seeing what comes of this.

Boxster S is a great car - well done. Even better that this one is an uncommon colour scheme - I like it. Looks happy in your garage!

Ok, a little update. I have been enjoying the car with the odd spirited drive to work and back. It is quite fustrating as the engine comes alive after 4k rpm and the gearing means that i can do 80mph in top gear and still not do 4k rpm. So in traffic it is hardly revving. Anyway, i dropped the car off at Steve Bull Specialist cars in Devizes for an insepction. I wanted to be sure that the car was what it said on the tin prior to investing money into the girl. Here is a list from Steve. I have had to type it all out as Photobucket is playing silly beggars. 1. Both Front strut top mounts unbonded. 2. Both front strut bump stops broken up. 3. PAS pipe crimp split. 4. Both front strut pistons corroded. 5. Non porsche approved tyres (non N rated). 6. Front brake pads 50% worn. 7. Rear brake pads and discs require replacement. 8. Air con pipes leaking. 9. Rear main oil seal lightly weeping. 10. Chain tensioner corroded. 11. All Exhaust Fittings corroded. 12. N/S/R drop link boot split. 13. Oil filler pipe leaking. 14. Front roof catch failing. 15. N/S/R steel brake pipe corroding. Other than that he cant find much else wrong with it. I paid for the gearbox oil to be replaces with Syntrax 75/90 and the gearbox mechanism to be lubricated as 2nd gear could be hard to find on cold days. Other wise i am quite chuffed. I will attack the ist of jobs once spring is here. Happy days. Some pictures from a time she was clean...

I used to have one of these - hands down the best driver's car I've ever owned. Manual or Tiptronic?

Thanks Paul. Its a Manual and has just had the gearbox oil and mechanism lube'd up - so should be good to go. I say should, as the wife has taken it to work. First thing i knew about this was a flat 6 starting up at 06:15 this morning.

The colour really suits the car. It looks lovely! I do wonder about getting one of these but the practicality of the M3 is winning for me at the minute. As for the list you got here's my view of what I'd be tempted to leave: 5. Non porsche approved tyres (non N rated). - To go with N rated tyres on a car of this age you are really limiting yourself. You can get better than N spec as well with the likes of Goodyear and Michelin's PS4 coming out 6. Front brake pads 50% worn. - I'd leave 'em until they get closer to the limit myself 8. Air con pipes leaking. - A spring job 9. Rear main oil seal lightly weeping. - I'd keep an eye on it but leave it for now. I know one known specialist is usually OK with leaving this area. 10. Chain tensioner corroded. - If he is referring to the engine one how would he know unless he took the covers off, which I can't imagine being an easy job 11. All Exhaust Fittings corroded. - Again, I'd look yourself ; they are probably OK . 12. N/S/R drop link boot split. - change that ASAP unless you want to buy a drop link later on. The boots are pence in comparison to the drop link 15. N/S/R steel brake pipe corroding. - Again, I'd see how bad it is, sand and regrease. Some would probably say replace here. Unless they are massively corroded I have never had a steel pipe fail me. Copper OTOH....

Fantastic cars, I got a facelift 986 back in July and spent two weeks driving it down to southern Italy and back. I'm truly in love with it. I'd say they're a good long term investment too.

I love that colour, it's gorgeous. Nice list of things to fix but nothing too serious. About 2 months back I sold my daily 2005 Volvo S60 and bought a 2001 Boxster 2.7 (Basalt Black with Nephrite Green interior), and I love it. I've done about 2700 miles in it so far and no major issues to report (other than all the little niggly things that were wrong with it when I bought it...). I didn't want to start a project thread here because I thought it might not be old/interesting enough but maybe if I keep it long enough and your thread gets popular... The only big thing I've done to mine is get a new roof put on as the plastic window in the old one was falling out and was cracked/unsightly and leaking water in to the cabin. If you need a new roof one day, I can highly recommend the glass upgrade roof from BAS International in Wales, great value and excellent quality! Looking forward to future updates.

Lovely looking car.
I would also buy it just for the colour.
I look forward to you photographing it clean, but in bright sunlight.
That colour will really "Pop" as they say.

The call for help........Update - After many months of mild use (high days and holidays, i noticed that the car had steam in the rear luggage area after a long run. On further inspection, i noticed that the steam smelt like cooolant. I asked the Boxanet forum who suspected a cracked coolant tank - a common fault. I checked under the boot carpet and this was flooded with hot coolant. New parts bought from Porsche - actually Porsche themsleves are great on price and often beat Eurocarparts etc on prices. The new coolant tank set me back £250. I was warned that this was a pig of a job and the design is a bit......mad. I took the car apart in mid April and it is now the end of May and i just cant get her back together again and nor can i move her as i have no coolant system. I have asked several garages for help, but no one will help. I just cant get to the pipes to get them back onto the new tank. Can anyone local offer me a hand? Please..... I am running out of nice days and am struggling to get the car on the road.

Update - I had my friend Justin from Watters car and commercial pop over this afternoon. 15 mins and £25 later and the pipes are all back on. I just need to put the car back together now. I will re-fill the system tomorrow and bleed, run the car for a few days prior to putting the carpet back in.
Come back sunshine!!

Glad to hear you're on the way to getting it back on the road! I've looked at these in the past, they seem a great option for a good drivers car, I've heard they're great to drive and well balanced!
