If the ring gear numbers are known by counting through the drain plug hole you can calculate the gear ratios (in each separate gear) by counting one revolution of the input shaft compared to the driveshaft revolutions. Although not VW related the principle is described here.... www.how-to-build-hotrods.com/gear-ratio.htmlI am used to Fiat 600 transaxles and they have a convenient cover to remove and count gears, at first I couldn't understand why you didn't just look inside 🙄

Also just been thinking about the age of the gearbox case, and if it's based on a 6V or 12V one. The starter motor hole should be bigger for the earlier 6V starter motor 16.5mm vs 13.6mm for the later 12V one. Again, more thinking out loud - why would the standard VW starter be used? Does it have a VW flywheel inside the bell housing? There's this home made ally flywheel inside the bell housing with (I believe) a stock VW starter motor, then a separate flywheel on the engine for the clutch to work on.

I'll do some investigating on the ratios and see if it throws anything up.

Had an email from the guy who originally built it, now I've just got one bracket to find a home for.

That is huge... I bet he'll have a lot of info for you. I've been in contact via email since I bought the car. He built it 40 odd years ago but info is slowly coming back to him. He's also confirmed that it's definitely not the block that he built the engine with. He's having a Motors & Models theme garden party in a few weeks which he's invited me along to and asked if I'll bring some parts of the car along.

Bug gearboxes before a certain age didn't have letter prefixes on the code. It's too long ago for me to remember exactly why/when, but it may well be before they offered two different engines (and therefore two sets of gearing) in 1965, there was only one ratio in production so no need for the prefix. I have hazy memories of it being possible to get a later 1200 without a prefix too though.

I've been told its for hanging women's knickers on because they get a bit excited at the sight of a proper racing car with the engine in a racing car place at the drag strip.

It is fascinating to see how inventive the original builder had been and how much bespoke work has gone into this dragster. It was built around the time that "Push - Starts" (down the road alongside the Pod Strip - hence "Fire-up Road") were banned and so a lot of earlier cars had to be modified to incorporate starter motors.

Yep. He has mentioned that the only bit that's changed is the self starter system.

This is I believe his current project, a 1/3 scale blower Bentley. Rather bizarrely I spotted this at a model engineering show I was at on Friday in Doncaster... I knew I'd seen it online but couldn't think where and in what context. Had a really good chat with the guy who was sat next to it, mostly about this and his other life size projects. If only I'd remembered this thread! Anyway to update on this... he's been busy

I'll just drop this here for now, too many stories to write down. Here's Mike Sayers (left, built the car), Rod George (centre, helped build the car) and Brian "Superwrench" Rees (helped run the car) with the engine from the dragster which I displayed at the Pickering Experimental Engineering & Model Society garden party today. First time they've seen it in nearly 40 years. Very exciting day for all.

Fantastic to see that the builders are able to see that their work is still being appreciated - icing on the cake for your project.

Definitely. Lots of questions I had answered too, including that it was definitely run on 20% nitro. Thought the jets were a bit on the large side. There were some superb cars at the charity day. This was my favourite, the Grenfell Special.
