Fitted some super cheap ram air filters until I admit to myself that a carbon airbox is the only thing that will really fit. Two fuel injectors started leading again. After pulling them out and swearing a lot, the top cushion seal is badly squished and it looks like it's also nicked the o-ring. The fuel rail has always been a dick, so I need to attempt a different approach. I think I'm going to try some 2mm spacers and longer bolts to give the top cushion a little more space, and hopefully it will still seal.

We did a drive up to Nisswa to spend a weekend with friends at a cabin. Ended up having to pull over after an hour of driving as something was definitely not right. Opened the engine bay, and discovered that the two of the fancy push-fit vacuum lines had detached and started melting on the exhaust manifold. Not sure what caused them to come off, but I clipped them down, stuck it back together and the car was much happier. However, there's an exhaust leak somewhere that's blowing into the cabin, and it's still running slightly rich. I pulled off the inlet and exhaust manifold off the other night, and fitted a new OEM gasket for them, along with a new exhaust gasket for the down pipe join - along with a healthy amount of sealant. Also filled a couple of holes in the firewall that didn't have bungs in them. Fired the car back up, and there's a load of popping and banging, so I've probably introduced an air leak somewhere. I had actually removed the Ramair filters, so I'm wondering if that's had an affect on how much air is being sucked in. Anyway, at that point, beer was calling. Here it is mid-work:

Well, looks like the Jeep has finally succumbed to 21 years on Minnesota roads. The rear control arm is no longer attached to the chassis rail, as there's a solid 6 - 8" of flaky, crumbly rust that seemingly disintegrates into dust in a stiff breeze. I've put too much into it this year already with the PAS pump blowing up, and a front U-joint needing replacing that I'm not willing to start chasing rust repairs on the chassis.
Still, new car shopping could be fun.

Are you sure it's not a Land Rover?

Are you sure it's not a Land Rover? Hah. I made a deal with myself that I'd get rid of the Jeep if it needed any work before winter - so it's getting sold this weekend. Testing a Volvo S60 T6 on Thursday, because I rented one for a winter and it was the comfiest armchair I've ever sat in, with the bonus addition of having a car attached.

Whilst the Jeep was fun, it wasn't comfortable for long journeys, anything over 55 mph was quite frankly terrifying, whenever you drove it on a windy day it felt like it would tip over and it was so noisy inside that you had to crank the stereo to almost uncomfortable levels. I'm willing to compromise on a few things for the Datsun, but for my daily I wanted something comfortable, reliable, AWD and powerful. And under $10k. So I put a low offer in and it got accepted! Picking this up from Pennsylvania next week and driving it the 13 or 14 hours home: 2012 Volvo S60 T6. I had a S60 T5 as a hire car for a couple of months over a winter, and was impressed enough to buy one. I'll try and get some pictures from the drive back, as I'll be hitting Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin and finally Minnesota.

That looks remarkably clean and tidy for a six year old four door. Even the wheels look nice and in my neck of the woods at least, they'd already be curbed and scruffy on something of this size and type. Nice colour too, many moons ago a neighbour's friend had a 240Z (project, absolutely rotten) in a similar shade.

That's why it was nice and cheap though, and they'll all be motorway miles. Not the nicest looker, but the inside makes it worth it. Just a shame I couldn't get a manual...

Some pictures from the trip. After getting a flat 200 miles into the drive: The sketchiest back-alley tyre shop I've been to: 900 miles complete! Back safe and sound:

I saw a couple 280Z's when I was over there - they're a rarity in the UK, they just couldn't take the weather/road salt. I was surprised how little it takes to get one through one of your yearly tests - saw a load of pick ups with the cabs/beds half hanging off. I can explain that really easily - there are no yearly tests in Minnesota

I liked that post except for the 6 oC bit! Just for you - unseasonably cold for November. The heated seats in the Volvo have been a game changer!

I'm not dead or anything like that, weather has somewhat stopped proceedings. I was spurred on to post after seeing someone on Instagram complaining that it had hit -6°C in Edinburgh.. Driving to work this week, we hit -32°C air temp, with the wind chill bringing that to -44°C: I have been to visit the Datusn though! Most of the way through pulling the dashboard out - there were a few wiring shortcuts taken to get it running last summer that I really want to redo. But if I'm redoing the wiring for the ECU and fitting a wideband (Christmas present from myself), then I may as well finally throw in the towel and get rid of the FAST XFI ECU, which has been the most thoroughly underwhelming piece of kit I've bought, and go back to what I know best. So Megasquirt it is. And if I'm doing that, I may as well move towards COPs and get rid of the distributor. There's a couple of companies that have solutions for this. I'm never driving this car again at this rate...

Love these updates, currently building up a 260z so watching the progress on your 280z is good!
