Love these updates, currently building up a 260z so watching the progress on your 280z is good! There should be some big updates coming at the end of the month. I'm doing what I should've done in the first place - Megasquirt 2 and LS2 coils. Also planning on overhauling some of the wiring I rushed through to get it on the road last year. Do you have a thread for your 280Z?

One is pretty ratty, the other was imported as a shell to convert to RHD, I'm waiting for it to come back from the guy doing it then the fun begins building it all back up. I'll probably end up sticking a thread up on the zclub, you should get yours up on there as well, unless you already have and I've missed it!

Only just stumbled across this hiding in the USA section of the forum. Love a good Z I have a friend in Minnesota, he sent me a picture once of the entirety of his interior covered in frozen coke because he forgot and left a can of coke on the dash in a cold snap haha. Sure gets pretty chilly.

Gotta keep telling myself it'll be worth it when it finally arrives...

Nothing much to report. The company working on the ECU ran into some problems with signal noise, so that's added another delay. Added some led lights to the garage, temporarily hooked up in the photo to make they're bright enough. This necessitated pushing the car outside and blowing some cobwebs off. Also ordered an MSD unit that provides a neat solution to a relay block - output is 4 X 20A channels. Should be plenty to run the ECU, O2 sensor and the two electric fans.

It's a classic combo of red and pink. 1995 1.8, super clean car. No rust, feels super tight still. The previous owner inherited it from his grandpa and was more interested in a bike. Got a ton of service history, receipts etc. Will absolutely not turn into a project until the 280Z is running again. Bad points - needs a new soft top, two smallish dings in the wing and it was disgustingly filthy.

There must be a thing where owning an s30 leads to buying an mx5 and I really should sort my Z too before doing anything to the mx5 though buying a rollbar seems appropriate, I picked one up last week too though an NB in gold

I fitted it with a ITBs from a TT600 and a Megasquirt 2, taught me everything I know about cars now. Rollbar will be going into this one eventually. My better half wants it wrapped in a dark grey as well, and some new wheels. She likes it a lot more than the Datsun, so who am I to argue?

I've lost motivation over the last year with the 280Z. After getting it on the road in 2018, it never ran right. I went through two different FAST EFI ECUs and it still constantly overfuelled, and was never happy. Almost a year ago, I started talking to a company in Texas about what I wanted to achieve. It was fortuitous timing, as they were developing a new product for the Z series. I've just taken delivery from them of something I'm far more familiar with - a Megasquirt 2. Supporting this is a COPS conversion and the key to all of it (and what's taken so long) - a drop in unit to replace the distributor and add a CAS. In the meantime, in some nice Minnesota temperatures (-11°C the last time I was there), I took the intake and exhaust manifolds off to replace all the studs. I suspect the constant exhaust smell might've been something to do with the very bent studs not allowing the exhaust manifold to get a good seal. All twelve came out with fairly minimal fuss, only one sheared. Whilst it's off, I'll fit the new wideband and get fitting the new goodies. We're in the process of house shopping now as well. Will be nice to not have to drive 30 minutes to work on the car. Now we're just biding our time, waiting for the right house and garage combo to come along.

Glad to see you are still digging away at the 280z.
Your Miata will be a fine weapon for AutoXing this year if you fancy a chuckle. Check out MNAutox for this years fixtures. Not sure about where you are, but over on the lake this Monday was -24C for my first drive into work for 2020. Not good.
I’m currently looking to bring a UK car over to the US. Having sold one of the 911s, I thought it would be fun to have something else impractical but different for this summer. Can’t say I’m looking forward to fighting the DMV again and all the paperwork though...

Sadly any kind of fun with the Miata is on the back burner until we get a house sorted. Same reason not much is happening in the Datsun right now as well. Plus my girlfriend will kill me if I do anything to the Miata...

Hopefully an old kitcar kinda sorta... If you need any parts for the Miata, let me know. I know a few people who race them / do despicable things to them. One is currently swapping out the Mazda engine for a turbo ford. Ive got to say I’m looking forward to the snow going away and cruising season starting up again!

It's in decent nick, doesn't really need much apart from some service bits. Hoping I'll probably buy a second one eventually for more fun modifications... Yeah, can't wait for the snow to disappear. This weekend should be fun...

An hour shovelling a good foot of snow somewhat dampened my enthusiasm for spending more time in the bitter cold this weekend. Manifold studs in, and had a go at scrubbing some of the block. There's original blue paint under there! Found some oil leaked out near the thermostat, so whilst I have everything off I may as well clean that up. Degreaser and some new gaskets next, then I'll hopefully get everything back together.

Eff me, lower thermostat housing is royally glued to the engine block and both bolts are nicely sheared. Not sure how I'm getting these out..

Can you try the welding a stud onto the remains trick?

Can you try the welding a stud onto the remains trick? It's getting liberal sprays with PB Blaster every day right now, and then I'll be back with a blowtorch to apply some heat. If I can get the lower housing off the remaining studs, there will be plenty of meat left to get them out with. Also ordered a set of LH drill bits, as I've had some success with that in the past.
