Auto tune is great but it’s only as good as your target table. IIRC there is a way to link the target table and VE table so you are effectively making changes direct from the target table. You can do that anyway but it’s quite laggy. Thanks for bringing the itb mode to my attention - will come in handy when I finally get my ITBs finished and fitted. There have been more than a few changes to available features since I joined the MS family in 2004 (!) Straight six on ITBs - there’s ear candy 🙂 Nick Sorry - never got round to replying to this. I think you're referring to the EGO settings in TunerStudio? I have them disabled right now, as I thought they interfered with VEAL mode - I don't think they add much if your VE table is pretty dialled in already.

Well I think I tracked down a problem on my ignition map. The car is running pretty good, but I'm still getting some of that clicking / firing through the intake at certain RPMs. I'm going to retard the timing around those bits and see if I can get it nice and smoothed out.
First thing is to load up the ignition map. On the X-axis, you have engine RPM and on the Y-axis, engine load. Now I'm running Alpha-N, this is simply throttle position percentage, and should run 0-100%.
I know I hear more of the misfires around 2000 - 3500rpm under 10-20% throttle, just from looking at some logs. So I went and opened up the ignition table, and spotted that my Y-axis values are 0,18,10,20,30,40,50,60,70,80,90,100.
Wait, what? Where did that 18 come from? I'm guessing I fat fingered something at some point. That might explain some of the issues.
The drive after correcting it to 5 was much more pleasant. Now I can tweak the VE table a little more and then going back to the ignition map and see if those cells need any more work.

Huzzah! It's always a bit humbling to find a mistake you've made, but also quite a nice feeling to find a definite cause for a problem. I'd prefer that to constant hunting for intermittent issues any day

I don't fully understand some of the stuff, but pleased you seem to be heading in the right direction. And trust me, that pup is only the thin end of the wedge! Hah, the fostering is pretty good for us as we want a dog, but not sure what size / type etc. Let's us sample a few first! We have Blue for the next 8 days. She's pretty high energy so far.

Ah see, we get around the dog size problem by having pretty much one of each. From the absolute runt of a runty litter, Vito the smallest thing I've ever seen that can still be called a dog, his slightly larger brother (allegedly some sort of poodle), through two Shih Tzus, then Lola, my mongrel mid-size street rescue and on to the Brothers Dimm, two more street rescues, the taller of which looks down on Tania with his paws on her shoulders and has been voted biggest dog on the street. Gets rid of all that decision making stuff!

I drove the Datsun over to a buddy's place earlier to see how he's getting on with his 1979 911 V8 project. Unfortunately the 280Z was sounding a little rough. When I got to his, I discovered most of the vacuum lines had melted at the connector end. Looking inside the connector, there appears to be a small metal band that I assume is doing the damage. These push to fit connectors have been a pain since day one. I've ordered a bunch of 1/8 BSPT to 1/4" hose barb fittings, and some double walled 1/4" hose that's rated for 200°C. If that doesn't fix it, I'll just copy my buddy and throw a V8 in it.

Been away camping near Canada for the last few days and wanted to share a picture I took from our campsite. Amazing place, stunning scenery and a perfect break from work. Edit: Noticed this uploaded in an absolutely terrible resolution. Yay interwebs. On a side note, whilst we were away a ton of brass adaptors for various vacuum hoses arrived.

Just combed through this thread in its entirely- nice work on this beautiful old thing. I'm in Minneapolis, if you ever need an extra pair of hands on the Z I'd be happy to help.
On a different note, where did you source that vacuum line? I've been having problems finding quality stuff for my Volvo that will stand up to the heat that the turbo throws off- that looks like just the thing.

I was really impressed with the hose - way more flexible than anticipated for something that is 6mm ID, 3mm wall. I've got some spring clips as well to fit once I have all the hose matching. Wish I'd done this a long time ago!

Alright, back to the 280Z. I've just taken it out for a spin, and the popping noises from the engine are just as bad as ever. I'm happy that this is now nothing to do with the bad vacuum setup, as that all seems rock solid. So onto the next list of ideas. I've varied the timing on the ignition map to seemingly no affect. However, I haven't balanced the ITBs for a long time. Out with the synchrometer then. Front and rear pairs both read 5kg/h. Middle pair reads 6kg/h. Does that variance seem enough to cause the popping? It definitely feels mechanical at this point. I've added a couple of pictures of the various adjustment screws on the ITBS. I think the plan is to set the idle higher with the main screw, and the adjust each of the ITBs. I know I've already messed with the wrong screws at some point, so I need to get back to them all synchronised.
