Where your new console meets the gearbox tunnel - could you get the choke cable (having rerouted it) to come up out of that - put a metal (or carbon fibre - there's posh!) facade there (painted matt black if you choose metal to match the rest of your panel) so that'll take the punishment?
You wouldn't have to drill into the tunnel - just reroute the cable down to that area.
Just a thought - looking at it, in my view, that's the only other area that I could see it working (and still look sort of stock).
I don't know how the choke cable works so forgive me if that's just a non-starter (for obvious reasons that I can't see!)
Love scimitars - think it's the 6 cylinder and lightness (ish) that appeals to me. Sort of Lotus-esque but er, not!!

Well, a mad frantic dash to get better nuts, bolts and screws, and some triple jointed "tiny hands man" multiple elbow shenaningans later, and stage 1 of my interior revival is now complete. The protective covers are off, and even though I say so myself, by my parameters and standards only, it looks pretty good. Still some snagging to do. Going to find a way to fit the choke cable this evening, and then I need to build the bit that goes along the top of the trans tunnel and the walls down each side. Only then will the last of the truly ugly areas be concealed, so I'll resist posting more repeat pictures until then. I am chuffed to bits though. I finally have the makings of an interior, and it's all quite sturdy!

I'd do it too... only I'm limited to using the cable I've got and that isn't going to be long enough. I can get it working between the vents where it currently is, I just need to make a few holding bits for it, and then remember to be tender with it when having a pull.

oh that vid made me laugh thank you .,if you were closer i would have those speakers in a shot for the back of my 95 astra estate ! Well if you wanted to pay for the postage and some bubble wrap, I could parcel them up nice and securely and stick em in the post for you. I wouldn't be asking anything for them, and they're just going to sit here if nobody wants them. They won't be going back in the Scim and I don't have anywhere else for them. Having said that they're ruddy heavy so the postage cost would probably be quite high. I can run them up to the post office and get a quote though if you're interested.

There are “early” and “late” 5a dashboard mouldings (actually relating to the position of the ignition switch) but I think the “grain” is more pronounced on the later ones. Don’t ask me when the changeover was but I’ll guess somewhere around 1973/4.
SE5 dashboards are completely different.

QM thank you ,just weight them for me , i can get a pickup quote off p2go then ? Willdo sir, though not tonight as I'm off for a much needed beer! Don’t ask me when the changeover was but I’ll guess somewhere around 1973/4. SE5 dashboards are completely different. Ah right, interesting. Cheers Phil. Aside from the difference in texture and colour, now that I've bolted everything together the join between the old dash and new console is almost invisible. I've spent most of my day very carefully and cautiously shaving off bits of the console lip and various chunks that weren't playing ball, until eventually I had it at the right shape to bolt it in. The edge of the 'new' piece is now tucked underneath the old piece, out of sight. Because the new piece is in front it also nicely hides the rough and wavy edge where a PO had sisel-sawed off the old console for reasons unknown.

Hnnnnng, planned to crack on with the car today. Wife has reacted to the simmering frustration that she feels when I neglect everything else in order to focus everything on my car, so this morning she announced we're emptying the lifts and getting out house in order.
I am covertly whittling Palight to make a choke cable bracket whenever she steps out of sight.

You have lifts? And an out house? Wow, no wonder funds are tight for Scimmy bits! 😂

You have lifts? And an out house? Wow, no wonder funds are tight for Scimmy bits! 😂 Hahaha. For 'lifts' read 'lofts'. For 'out house', read 'our house'. We are very humble people of modest means. There are no lifts. There are no outhouses. I am the proud owner of three coal bunkers though, which are full of car tat from the last decade's old vehicle jiggery-pokery. We're still at it too. I've been crawling around the loft all day, sorting everything, making tip runs, charity shop runs, bagging up five years of Classic and Sports Car magazines for the tip (no, nobody can have them in case anybody asks, they're going to the tip tomorrow). It turns out that since we had our loft converted into a third bedroom, we've had a sizeable loft space crammed to the gills with stuff we could have thrown away. We've practically thrown everything away that was in there today. So now all the curse word that has since mounted up in our bedroom over the last X years can now be put into the newly emptied loft space. WHAT FUN I'M HAVING!

Is there a prize for the worst project thread on here?
Because I think there should be, and I think I might be in with a chance of winning.

Damn you, Captain Slog, for destroying my dreams. Actually... I realised something for the first time yesterday - when reading the Bulgarian Lada thread - something that is very obvious but had just never occurred to me. There's potentially an attention-seeking aspect to posting in progress threads purely because each new post bumps that thread up into the 'most recent' list. It hadn't occurred to me at all, as daft as that sounds. I just like a place to drop wibbling nonsense such as this, but usually related to my car if possible. I now realise that it is probably very irritating for everyone else to keep having a slow, scrappy, meandering bodger's thread on the RR list everyday... So without the same petulance or aggression of the Lada geezer, I am also going to cut down what I post and when I post it, from here onwards. Just car stuff, and just when it's happened, and only if it's worth posting about. Aside from that I'm going to stick to questions, opinion-requests or comments in other threads. The whole thing about bumping up threads just hadn't ever crossed my mind until now. Apologies all! You've been very patient!

I don’t think that is necessary, some people carry their threads along and when in the mood I have a catch up. You are not alone in that, and I am a little jealous that I only seem to be able to write statements of what we’ve achieved, but very little else Besides, if we don’t want to read your drivel, we can ignore it like that other thread

Yes don’t worry at all - the meandering is quite often the funny bit ! If we don’t like it we don’t have to read it do we ? Carry on as before James

How dare you force me to read your thread! Physically making me click on it to open it up...
I have started numerous project threads, full of enthusiasm and promises, only to then neglect them so people who might have been interested are left high and dry. I think for me it's remembering to take photos that's the hassle. I'm just as bad when it comes to my magazine articles.

One quick interim update from me. I have a bit of free time today so I couldn't resist starting work on mocking up the tunnel cladding. Still not entirely sure how to go about this as the tunnel is plastered in thick horrible, self-almalgamated rattle trap so there isn't a straight line in sight across the whole thing. I know what you're thinking... "Why not remove the rattle trap?" Here's why: 1. It's thick, gummy, and really horrible. Removing it will be a very long, very sticky, very horrible process. 2. It must have been stuck there for a reason. I can already see some metal plates crudely riveted over parts of the transmission tunnel, so who knows what secrets lurk beneath the undulating inches-thick mess of rattletrap. Certainly not a nice smooth, level transmission tunnel that's for sure. 3. I'm trying to just tidy up the interior of my car. It's largely cosmetic. I can't afford project-creep where I start off intending to stick some cladding in the interior, and end up having to fix previously unseen things that will set me back weeks. Everything works as it is... so I'm just going to deal with the mess as best I can and make it look X% nicer at the end, even if some errant bodgery has to be employed along the way. Here's the cardboard mock-up stuff. I now need to take a deep breath and begin cutting my one remaining piece of material that afford sme no margin of error at all. Quite tricky when trying to box in a shape that has more in common with a natural rock formation than a car's tranny tunnel. ^NB: The funny curve on the top of the panel near the dash console will be a straight line. No idea why I thought about doing a carnival Waltzer scoop on that part when hacking the cardboard.

I like that - I'm assuming you'll put a side in on the drivers side too. Once that's there perhaps there's an opportunity to put a little bit of cardboard just at the bottom of the down slope so that you can put your phone there (it'll stop it moving around of course)? Maybe even put another little area in on the flat element before the gearstick for loose change/whatever too?
Perhaps you could pop a charger point in at the top of the first area too (with maybe a lead into the back of the radio aswell?) if you play music from your phone.
Otherwise - like it and does smarten that area up (I'm assuming you'll get some nice carpet/dedicated car material). Just makes life in the car feel more modern (and modern works in some situations!)
Keep up the excellent work!
