Welpppp, after the sad loss of my Humber, I've meandered around a wilderness of carless solitude, no longer even sure I wanted a quirky old clunker in my life (< That's not a reference to my wife. This isn't the 1980's anymore. Jokes like that just are not funny in 2016), and so rather than driving, I've been walking around for the last 6 months or so. Just walking. Not even making car noises. Not even pretending to adjust my mirrors. Literally just walking. It was fun. Walking is very interesting. But, you can't just walk around forever, and lately, I decided to pick myself up and get back out there to see what the world has to offer. I wanted something that was slightly less of a jumble sale of things-from-other-cars and custom made parts, and something for which parts are not so hard to find. I also decided I either wanted to go older than the Humber and get an MOT-exempt car, or didn't want to go quite so old as the Humber was, because I'm not a classic car man what-what, and what I actually like is rough and ready old beasts with character and scars. The Humber had character and scars, but it also had lots of other stuff that I really couldn't put my time and energy into dealing with. So, today I got the train up Norf, and then drove back darn sarf in this.... and as soon as I get a bloody moment to myself, it will very quickly look more like this... Drove it about 300 miles home today, and it's largely good. Brakes are hysterical, in every sense of the word, and it had a few spates of mild misfiring when we had been sat in traffic jams on way too many of our great british motorways in searing sunshine heat. It also rained at one point on my way home, and I was intrigued to discover it also rained on my leg. Inside the car. It rained on my leg, inside the car. I don't think anybody else is offering that feature at the moment. It's very basic inside, but not as inhospitable as the Humber, which was basically a metal box. This has a couple of bucket seats, electric windows (ELECTRIC WINDOWS! I FELT LIKE TOME CRUISE IN MINORITY REPORT!) and even a stereo, which completely threw me. Haven't had a stereo in a car for years and I struggle to understand why anyone would drive a car like this and mask the noise it makes with synthetic music. But I'm sure I'll learn to appreciate the benefit of occasionally putting on my David Gray CD and having a cry. It allegedly has a 3.1RS V6 in it, but I am skeptical until I've investigated further. I suspect it has a standard Essex V6 in it with fancy alloy rocker covers. It definitely does have MaxPower 10:1 pistons, and a fast cam, and it definitely has tubular manifolds and nice burbly side exit exhaustypipes which sound like a giant, gargling frog spawn in an opera house. It has potential. It also has some immediate fixes need doing. I may only have it until spring and then move it on... but for now, I'm back on the road.

I like the first modification - the removal of someone else's stickers. Here's hoping that the engine is indeed a fruity 3.1 RS...

Sadly I only think he stuck the stickers on to make it more sellable. But... removing the stickers isn't my only modification. I've also blacked out the rear window, with some black photoshop window.
I will be using real window and doing it for real, on my real car, very soon.

I will be using real window and doing it for real, on my real car, very soon. Looks like you've given the wheels a nice little polish with the Solvol Photosol too? Cheers Matt

Really liking that (and you're journalistic style had me chuckling! Which had a few people staring!!) I've always had a soft spot for the Scimitar, never been in one, but I think a nice auto would make a lovely cruiser.

really like this, just needs some stickers on it ? I think what I'll do is remove the stickers from where they are, but they're good stickers, so I might reapply them in slightly different locations.

I do like stickers, but I always find myself wondering what we're trying to communicate when we drive around with stickers on ordinary cars on ordinary roads.
"Hello there, I'm using Spax adjustable shock absorbers"
"Hi, how are you? My engine is full of Castrol oil, so it's nice to be me"
"Just so you know, if I ever fit spotlights to this car... they'll definitely be Hella ones"
"I know it's not a race... but I'm number 72 anyway so WATCH IT PAL!"
On some cars, they just belong there. It's legit. No question. But not this one. In truth the owner put them on because he took the car to a classic event/race at LeMans earlier this year. It's got some nice discreet "I've been to fancy places" stickers on the windscreen which I'll probably keep.

OOOOOH. Nice. NICE.
Love the lowered stance. I'm not going to start dabbling in ride height on this car. I got proper fed up with scraping my last car over mild speed bumps and pebbles, so I'm actually quite happy to keep it where it sits... BUT, if I was going to lower it, I would want it standing just like yours.
Capri quarter bumpers?
I've got a VW splitter on mine underneath the standard Scimitar bumper. Haven't looked to see how well it's attached, but I was thinking I might remove the front bumper from mine completely if the splitter doesn't look like a a packet of crisps behind it.

One thing I need to do with my car is get the modern style number plates replaced with classic Black & Silver plates. Not sure why nobody else has done that during it's life. I love me some old number plates.

Bumpers are from the front of the consul Capri (scimitar fronts are chopped rears) - on 8 ball (above) they're GRP. I ran it without bumpers for a while.

I haven't posted any updates here for the last 3 weeks because I've been learning a tonne of stuff over at the scimitar forum. I've done a fair amount to the car already, but chipping away at the edges really and not anything worth posting pics and stories about.
The three biggest issues to tackle were a misfire, a front wheel that rubbed the wheel arch when turning left, and the fact the rear hatch only has one hinge currently. The latter seemed the least important.
Misfire disappeared never to return with new spark plugs (Misfire most likely caused by one of the old plugs being effectively two independent parts occasionally touching each other). The front wheel arch fouling seems to be a simple case of a slightly dropped nose due to a missing piece of support and a weird deformity to a reinforcement plate. Finally got the deformed plate off today, straightened and fettled and refitted it, and the wheel no longer touches the arch. The missing piece of nose support will be fabricated and fitted tomorrow, so that issue will be gone hopefully. The rear hatch hinge turns out to be the trickiest fix now.
Aside from that, I've got the indicators working (they werent), the electric windows working (they werent), fitted weather strips to the door window exteriors, refilled gearbox oil, changed engine oil, greased everything that needs it, changed the curse word fuel line for proper fuel line, restored a very shabby windscreen rubber which should give me a couple of years before I need to rip it out, refitted exhausts - one of which was almost falling off, fitted a rear view mirror, and I had the brakes checked out by a trusted local garage (I don't mess with brakes, I don't feel confident to fiddle with them). Ive also tore down a fair few areas in pursuit of squeaks and rattles to silence them (both door internals were full of bits of the car that shouldn't be there for example) and that's been a good way to start to get familiar with the guts and giblets.
The car runs really well and I don't have any engine/mechanical issues on my to-do list (famous last words). The only thing I need to think about is whether I need to change the front shocks as the car feeds back every lump and cranny of the road surface but also seems to bounce after significant lumps/dips. It may equally be the really curse word bucket seats though, I don't know... I haven't begun looking at that yet.
It's only been three weeks and I've only been chipping at the edges, but I feel I've already made more positive progress with this than in the 2+ years of the Humber.
Lots still to do, but as things stand i'll be focusing on cosmetics sooner rather than later, and making it look like the decent car it seems to be at this point in time.
There seems to be the potential for the gear selectors to be a bit worn, but I think I might just be dragging the anxiety of the Humber over to this car as they both have the same type5 gearbox. The gears change perfectly, but I keep asking myself "did that change feel stiff, difficult, odd?" but I always conclude it didn't.
Lots of things I want to change... tyres, seats, refit proper seat belts, refit centre console, but i'll be focusing on fixes and doing stuff like refurbishing doors and tidying up bodywork first.

I am hoping to pick up a Scimitar Se6 myself in the next few weeks. I have always promised myself a classic and have been without anything "interesting" for roughly 10 years now. I will be 40 in December and I have vowed to myself that I will get me a toy for my 40th. I have my eye on a local Scimitar that I just need to give the chassis a good looking over then I will hopefully get a deal sorted. I have never driven one before but I am sure it will be fine, its not like I hoon about much anymore anyway.
