OK so I know that they aren't massively retro, but I need something practical and ones local, looks smart and I'm tempted. Details below:
2000 reg Audi A4 estate, 4wd, 1800cc turbo 180bhp?) 131k on it, full history, 12 months test. Cam belt done at 77k.
So, what to look for?
My plan was service it, 30mm lows, re-map. Then use as bike/dog lugger.
It's up at £1200 from memory, has leather, toys, alloys, etc etc.
Anything to be scared of? Nasty things they do?

Front suspension arms can go (there's 8 of them) but the parts are fairly inexpensive I bought a full set of Febi ones for around the £180 mark.
The plenum drains can get blocked and fill the ecu and fuse box with water and it can also run down onto the back of the brake pedal and cause it to go into limp mode.
Got no idea of any problems with the Quattro system or the 20vT engine as I had a 2wd Diesel. One of if not the best daily I've ever had.

So wanted petrol, and this popped up. One thing I can't find is how 4wd suspension differs from 2wd. Just aware (Google-foo) that it does.

There is an issue with the 1.8 20vT engines in these.... They have a problem with oil sludging, which is a result of the oil strainer on the pickup pipe being too small for the demands placed on it when the engine is on boost. I had this problem on my Passat 1.8T Sport. The solution is to remove the sump, take out the pickup pipe and cut off the strainer. Then weld on a larger strainer and reassemble. I took the precaution of replacing the oil pump while I was in there for my own peace of mind.... Was only about £50 for the pump iirc..... Just so you know, it's really easy ( and relatively cheap!) to get these up to around 260 bhp

Can't find another for sale anywhere

My Passat is only worth about £500, but it's worth doing mate. As for 260bhp fit a front mount inter cooler, manual boost controller, k04 turbo decat and a remap. Apparently they can go up to 350bhp on standard internals......
