I think moving the tyre out in the arch has definitely improved the visual aesthetic. To my eyes the original setup looked like the tyres were too low a section.
If I'm honest, I'm not sure on the "stretch", I think if it were me I'd be looking at a wider tyre, even if that meant less offset to allow for clearance issues. At 50 though I'm much, much older than you, and have no idea what it is to be young any more, so I'm not certain you should pay any attention to me. Have you seen my zimmer? What did I come in here for again?

What did I come in here for again? Agreed Glen. I went for 175x60 for the 5.5 wheels as 185 on the 5.5 rim looks a bit over hangy? I can get away with a 185 on the 7”, just, so that will be my next choice when replacements are due. I’m not a fan of the rubber band look but I don’t like to much wall either. 50 series are not my thing either, which is quite popular on the old Fords

They are a good looking wheel Pete. And well priced too. But I like a bit of dish and the Lotus style really does it for me. I even used to run them on my Escort until I fitted rear disc brakes and they wouldn’t fit anymore.

It’s hard to get the motivation to do anything out the garage in this weather but I have actually started the van and moved it off the field. It’s now parked along side the new garage on the chippings. I can’t put it in its old home yet as the scaffold around the old garage is in the way and I can’t put it in the new garage as the old low door is still on as I can’t afford to buy a new roller shutter yet. I’ve still not sorted a new shorter alternator belt yet but it hasn’t been dry so I can lay on the floor to measure it. It did start well after a few pumps on the throttle though, even though it hasn’t been run since June/July. I did do a bit on the Cortina today. When I rebuild the body a few years ago, one thing I forgot to weld to it is one of the hooks to hold the jack bag down in the tool well in the boot. One was still there, but the other hook had long disappeared along with half of the tool well. I rebuilt the tool well but didn’t add a hook, and now it’s all painted 😩. I still wanted to add a hook to stop the jack flailing about and scratching/denting the well, so I decided to bolt one in. But first I had to make one. The original that’s still there is 6mm. I only had 8mm bar so that would have to do. So I heated up the end with MAP gas until red then hammered it on the anvil to from a flat. I then clamped the flat to a bolt in the vice and again heated until red and then bent it into a hook shape. This is where I forgot to take anymore WIP photos, but basically I hacksawed it to length drilled a hole in the flat and mixed up some imaginatively named “Ford Light Blue” and painted it and the hole I had to drill in the tool well. Here it is all bolted in. I then went and bought a bottle of red wine 😊

I like the hook idea, you've done a good job of remaking it too

Now that the hook was in I needed a jack to put in the tool well. I’d never intended to use the standard type of Cortina jack that slide into four tubes under the sill, firstly because I don’t like the idea of jacking a car up from 1 corner and secondly because I don’t have one. So £10 on eBay later I had this. Now being a bit of a princess about the the paint underneath I decided to spread the load And because I’m a bit of a princess about the paint underneath I thought I would cushion it So now that I had a jack, and seeing as i’m a princess about the paint in the boot, I needed something to put it in. The Cortina jack originally came in a hessian bag and you can buy one from a guy on eBay for £12 or so. But you can also buy a hessian bag on eBay that’s designed for potatoes and not a jack for £2 or so I then shortened a bungee cord and put it in the tool well. Then had some more wine.

....and because you're a "bit of a princess".... Pre-Saturate the jack carpet with cavity wax, so as to immediately protect any possible chips or scratches?

It is an utter travisty that the piece of carpet isn't colour-matched to your car. It was all going so well.

that's like some of the carpet we threw out because I was being a princess over its condition!

that's like some of the carpet we threw out because I was being a princess over its condition! This carpet was in our hall when we moved in. It’s odd in that you could only Hoover it in one direction. You could push the Hoover ok, but when you pulled it back it what skip off the floor. So I’ve been told anyway 😁

Back to the Cortina wheels. Remember I was planning to fit some 7” wide, Lotus style steel wheels? Well over the following weeks I’d been keeping an eye on John Brown Wheels website and their eBay shop to see if they had any offers on. They didn’t. Over Christmas / New Year I was checking everyday as I was sure they’d have a sale. They didn’t. So last Saturday I messaged them on eBay and asked if they were going to have a sale on. Cheeky I know, but if you don’t ask... They replied straight away. A set of 4 with stainless hub caps is normally £340 and my mind was telling me it was to much to spend (pretty needlessly as lots of other stuff still needs sorting). They returned with an offer of £295+ postage, but when I checked the link it was included postage. This new number seemed a lot more appealing even though it’s only £45, so I bought them and they arrived today. Now this is where my maths logic goes a bit skewif? As I like them a bit darker I’m going to pay to get them resprayed the same colour as the wheels on there now. Bonkers, I know.

jonsey - Far from bonkers its only going to pee you off if you put tyres on them and fit them to the car - that strange voice nagging in your head every time you look at the car saying you should have painted them darker - get them painted and smile instead of putting up with that 'I told you to paint them darker'
