Love builders me. Many years ago, a major advertising agency near where we lived, now MacCann, were doing a campaign that involved bricks. Don't ask me why. One of the directors lived in the same village as me, and popped into the Queens Arms one night. In there were two brothers who were, drink aside, fantastic craftsmen in brick or stone. Of course, they didn't work Mondays, maybe do a bit Tuesday, Wednesday's half-day, Thursday is winding down for Friday. Friday repeat Monday. Remember, this was all weather dependent. A little cloud on the horizon would see them scuttling to the local boozer, of which we had 22, so no problem there, Dave, one of the brothers was heard famously to remark on a wet Sunday, "What a bloody waste of good bad weather"! Anyways, said ad guy went to Dave first and asked him for quote. Wall, brick, x' long, y' high, all inside a studio. Dave, powered by Stella, gives him a price. Ad guy wanders down the other end of bar and ask's brother Ian same question. Ian, on Cider, also quotes. Back to Dave, and tells him "I can get it done for so much". Dave undercuts. Back to Ian, who goes cheaper. A last pop at Dave, who is now determined to win the work. You guessed it. They did a fantastic job in the end, but never spoke to each other for weeks! Sorry for the hijack!

Is it not possible to get another rad (appreciate it wouldn't be original, but it sounds like you will never be happy with what has already been done to the existing one). Was the same size rad fitted to any other Ford models?

Was the same size rad fitted to any other Ford models? This rad isn't the original. After asking lots of questions on the owner club forum I have found out it was fitted to export Cortina's. In this country it was a only fitted to early mk2 15GT's and the Lotus model. The chance of me finding another is slim. I paid £80 for this one. I know I won't be happy with this unless the guy really pulls a rabbit out of the hat when I return it, but I can't buy another I'm haemorrhaging money on this car at the moment and I've got lots more to source yet

Looking at those pictures now on my PC rather than on my phone, I'd be inclined to agree with your first impression in that it wasn't the same radiator. How can it be an inch shorter than yours for a start? And what has happened to the drain tap?

My worst worry about dying is my wife selling my stuff for what I told her it cost...

How can it be an inch shorter than yours for a start? And what has happened to the drain tap? The drain tap looks like it has been removed as there is definitely lead in that area. The header tank looks like it's been kicked around the workshop. To me lots of the dents look like the sort a radiator would gather of years and not through working on it- unless you had total disregard for it. The guy was adamant it was the only one he'd done recently so couldn't have got mixed up. He did he'd done a corsair one but that was 500mm wide and not 450 like mine. I googled some corsair radiators and they do look like the wider Transit type.

I have just measured my Corsair rad. Mounting centres: 560 x 195mm Rad including header tank: 50 x 500 x 530mm The Corsair rad is closer to a Mk1 rad than a Mk2 rad. Hope that helps?

Thanks for the measurements Pete. It helps put my mind at rest a bit that the guy with the Corsair rad hasn't got mine. That rad of yours looks immaculate. Ok a couple of little dings but a lot better than my "refurbished " one

Not much has happened on the van / car front. My Avensis daily rear brake back plates disintegrated so It had no handbrake so that needed to get fixed. After I'd done that, I've started to re install the wiring harness on the Cortina. Only a few bodges found, but it's hard work when you didn't take it out and iv got several bits of Cortina looms in the pile of different model/year cars I've not touched tha van. This is an old photo from last summer.☹️ I haven't even taken a photo of it recently and I'm sure the insurance must if run out but I've not had a reminder from AF. In other news I've got a new ride I'm sick of spending half the morning fixing the old one and jump starting it off the rally car every time I go to use it. I normally stop cutting the grass when the the old one broke. So as usual before the first cut of the year I had to fix the mower. I bought to new inner tubes as they tires were always flat. I started it, which it did straight away put it in drive and ....nothing. I took a look underneath and there were belts and bits in places they shouldn't be. Took a look under the seat and the main drive pulley housing to the rear axle had bcracked and fallen off. I could have welded it but couldn't be arsed with it all. So I'm now the proud owner of a John Deere x166. I've not used it yet. I don't want to get it dirty😁. So today was Drive It day. Cortina not finished, van not got the lights finished yet, mower to new so Rally car it was then. But first I had to change the rear wheels. Off with R88R's And in with the Skid Master/Ditch finder Specials. These were on the Cortina when I bought it as a pile of scrap. They are as hard as rocks, but have the advantage of making the 150bhp I've got feel like 400bhp. So first off me and the boy drove to Burry Port harbour for Icecream. On the way there an MG midget passed in the other direction and gave a wave. That was nice. I waved back and explained to the boy that no I don't know him, he just has an old car too. At the harbour there were some more classic cars (see above photo). They watched me drive in and pull up, they even saw me walk towards them for a look at the cars and then promptly blanked me😐. They were probably upset at the noise of the engine, straight cut box and the fact that it wasn't standard. Never mind. We had our icecream and Jonsey Junior played in the Park. We then drove over to the other side of the harbour and grabbed a burger and hot dog. One of the guys I race with was there also. We had a chat and the old lady serving said the was free racing at Pembrey circuit today so went and had a nose. We parked on the bank and watched for a bit it was a drifting competition. They were to far away to take any photos. They were mainly Japanese cars, a few BMW's and this. Very cool. It runs a Nissan turbo motor apparently. The sidevalve is long gone. We then drive home the long way round without seeing any other classics. A round trip of around 40 miles. We both enjoyed. I can't remember if I've already mentioned this but the next Motorkhana (big auto test that I do in the Escort) is on my eldest Jonsey Juniors 14th birthday. This means he can now do it himself so I've bought him a MGZR 1400cc. Still MOT'd till August and cost £425. The electric fan doesn't work though so I've boil d it already. The fan works but the car doesn't turn it on. I'm probably going to hard wire it. Here it is parked next to the dead mower. And finally, almost forgot, Peteh has come up trumps with a set of GT badge inserts for the Cortina. After my previous post about these he kindly offered to scan a badge for me and get them etched in stainless steel. They look bloody good too I now need to somehow get them painted to look like this Well happy. So some words and pictures, but not a lot done. Ciao

After the radiator debacle I have finally got round to taking it back and have already picked it up. The guy was true to his word and has fixed all the issues he also fitted a new filler neck with a copper overflow pipe instead of the useless plastic ones which don't seal and let coolant onto the core when the cap blows. The paint job isn't as bad as the "painted with a dogs tail" look it had last time but it still could be better- an easy fix. I've started running the brake pipes and I've also sourced some new headlamp looms. Ford used generic Lucas looms for this so I've bought a pair of GT6 looms and will just need to shorten them a bit when the new generic Lucas headlamp bowls turn up. I have some bullet connectors left from when I swapped the vans lights. The wheels are over my brothers and the painter has sprayed them in Rolls Royce Silver Pewter. They just need to be lacquered and I can fit some tyres. The painter doesn't like the colour and thinks they should be repainted as there is a green tint to them and he thinks they won't go with the blue paintwork. Wheel see. If I don't like them I'll get them resprayed. I've finally worked out where all the dash wires go. The clocks and vents will need to come back out for the rings to be plastic chromed. I can't believe how much it costs. About £200 for the set. Crazy. Until next time. Ciao

Oh. I've also experimented with the GT badges. I bought some anodised red paint from frost. I tried masking off the letters with fine line tape first, but my masking was curse word so it bled onto. The letters but also the paint went darker around the tape edge for some reason. To curse word to take a photo even. The next one I've sprayed the whole badge and will glue some wet and dry to the bench and sand the letters back to the metal. We'll see how it goes next time.

That ford is looking very good and very nice attention to detail all around. I have never used it but there is chrome paint out of a spray can. It is difficult to believe that works but its not that expensive to give it a try as it is only a small area Keep up the good work! Peter

I've tried some chrome paint in the grp front bumpers of the rally car. Obviously there are are a few types out there but the one I tried just looked like silver paint and not like the chrome finish it had on the cap.

Well it turned out the painter was bloody right! Once he laquered the wheels they look REALLY green. I actually quite liked the colour, but not for some wheels on a light blue car. So repaint time. The painter had also painted some tinilite steels for my brother in a Ferrari silver so he resprayed them in this but with some black added to darken them a bit. Much better I think. A couple of weeks ago I dropped some of the Cortina bits off at South Wales Metal Finishing for them to be plated. They had trouble doing the throttle linkage as there was paint on it. I thought I'd got it all off with a wire wheel but apparently it just blended it in. They soaked it in some strong acid and finally got a result. Between dropping he bits off and going to pick them up I realised it left a few bits out. I asked the guy if he could do them and post them to me and he said if I wait an hour he'd do them. So after one of these I collected all these It cost me £40 so not to bad at all. I can now make a start of bolting the suspension back on
