...well the back end at least. It's time to say goodbye sump and hello chiropractor! Before... After... It has Sierra lowering springs in there at the moment, which are dramatically shorter... It's pretty much on the bumpstops, but if I wuss out I will chop a few coils off the stock springs... a test drive will show whether I can live with it or not! Tomorrow I need to lower the front some more (1.5 - 2 inches should do it, as the nose is pointing a little skywards ;D), after I've drilled out the two damper bolts that sheared off on the back end Happy though - my mojo seems to have made a comeback! ...oh, and please no "cut springs are bad" curse word please...

Yes yes YES. That is HARD. Following in the well trodden steps of Mr TCC. Heh, I guess I'm about to find out just how hard hardslammed is! ;D I'm hoping I'm not going to have the same CV joint wear / tyre destruction issues that TCC had as it's a slightly different set-up on my car, but hey-ho, it's just one of those things! ;D

you might just be low enough to get though driveshafts at that height are those wheels 15s of a later merc or 14s off a t25? mines a little lower, and it did 2 in just over a year. and they're £110 a time new(hence me now having a stockpile!!). and you have to take the diff off AND apart to fit them. not fun. i was towing with it though, so you might be ok.

just how dangerous is that then the sierra springs the same diameter then? handy to know... for merc owners anyway lol

Thanks for the encouraging words! you might just be low enough to get though driveshafts at that height are those wheels 15s of a later merc or 14s off a t25? mines a little lower, and it did 2 in just over a year. and they're £110 a time new(hence me now having a stockpile!!). and you have to take the diff off AND apart to fit them. not fun. I was towing with it though, so you might be ok. Hmmm, yeah I'm a bit worried about the driveshaft issues. What I'll probably end up doing is making the other set of springs to give a bit more height (only a bit) so I can swap 'em in if things get too bumpy or I start having nightmares about driveshaft death. To be honest, the driveshafts look pretty horizontal when the car is on the ground - does this wear them out? I always assumed that they wore out if they're at a crazy angle. I'll have it up on ramps tomorrow so I should be able to see what the deal is a bit clearer. The wheels are 14's from a W116. I have a nice set of 16in cross-spoke alloys but they need picking up from Newquay next time I'm down there, and a refurb... and probably some stretched rubber to get them under without rubbing. I'll update tomorrow with (hopefully) the front end lower. I've done the front end before so at least I know what I'm up against. There's always the chance that something will go pete tong though!

When I fitted the air on my merc coupe,I was worried about the d/shaft travel, either in full up or full drop position . Full height has a restrictor tab on the wishbone ,and I don't think removing the bumpstops is a good idea to get more drop!I try to drive it mostly at stock height ,but the temptation to drive on full drop is innevitable! This is what I did to get the shock mount out of the centre of the spring to allow bags to be fitted!I fitted the shock to the rear of the wishbone ,turretted into the floor. BUT this also meant repositioning the petrol pump slightly to one side, and re routing the brake pipes.I set it up so the shock acts as the height restrictor on full shock travel.don't know whether the saloon version has the shock in the spring or not tho'!

This pic shows the restrictor tab,and plated over wishbone etc The bolt protruding from the plate is for the bag mount.

Quality stuff there mate, that looks totally sweet! The definition of "hard slam" Happy though - my mojo seems to have made a comeback! It weird how you can get disheartened with a car. A kind of car induced depression, personally it usually happens when I have not made a change for a bit.............. then you get a new part or do something like this and suddenly it all seems worth it.

Sierra - here we go again! He has an illness, it's not his fault.

the driveshafts on mine sat a bit upwards of level and they were fine lie that, what nackers them is if you bottom it really hard- the bumpstop rubbers are too soft and don't really work that well, your shafts can still go past their movement, and it cracks the CV cages.

Be interested to see if the Sierra springs are up to the job. I would have expected them not to be strong enough.
Hard to tell from your pic, but the Merc springs look to be wound out of heavier gauge. Nothing wrong with cutting linear rate springs if needs be!!
Looking forward to seeing the completed job, well done.

Looking forward to seeing the completed job, well done. You're right, the Merc springs are meatier. In theory, both cars are similar weight, so I just assumed the springs would be of similar rate. I might get chopping the Merc springs and have a play around with them. Dez - I see. Yeah the bumpstops are pretty soft ain't they?! I'll look into trying to preserve the driveshafts somehow... maybe I'll raise the back end a little...
