I'm looking to find the cheapest single journey to my in laws in France. They have a uk car which they no longer need and said I can have it for free if I collect it I'm just looking for the cheapest way to get there they live just north of Toulouse. I'm sure they would pick me up if I could get close. Flights are expensive so was looking at train/coach maybe car share. Anyone got any ideas?

Train will probably be your best bet.

Eurostar will not be cheap although the TGV/SNCF train in France will be. I suspect one of the low cost carriers will be cheapest like Ryanair (Shudder) or Queazyjet. All will be reliant on booking as much into the future as possible.

I saw a megabus on the shuttle the other day, could be worht looking into.
However, when flights are sub £100, you're going to struggle find anything comparable, unless you're not flying for ethical reasons

Do you shop at Tesco? Your clubcard points can be used to pay towards chunnel tickets.

Thinking about it the expensive bit is getting the other side of the channel. After that trains are cheap in France. See if a local haulage firm that does Euro deliverys or similar could take you across?

I visit my parents in Bergerac by flying Ryanair Stansted - Bergerac, £25 out of season and about £85 in high summer, I'm sure there is a Toulouse flight also, or a connection at least.
Eurostar is about £250 any time of day, only thing going for it is the alcohol bar carriage hasn't been updated since they built the thing and looks like a piece of the set from the head quarters of the Men In Black movie..

Hitch a ride with one of the curse word on Facebook saying they're going to leave the country as we are all racists for wanting to control our own destiny

Cheers for for the reply a everyone.
Been doing some digging and cheapest for me door to door is looking like
Megabus from Sheffield (can walk to station) to Limoges £42 (takes 23 hours lol)
Train from Limoges to Ville Franche de rouergue £28 And pick up from there.
£70 door to door. Not too shabby but probably very curse word off.
Then return is where it gets expensive 900 miles at 30 mph is approx £165 Ferry £50 Tolls £50 (maybe less)
Plus add onto that insurance tax food etc it's going to cost more than I could get back on the car (and the car isn't even interesting enough)
Nice idea for a road trip but for close on £300 before the required extras I'm out!

Sounds like a cheap way to earn brownie points! Go for an adventure, take the better half, stay with the in-laws, pick up the free car and enjoy your trip back!

Exactly. It's a holiday with a car already there, not a collect and return trip...
handiest and cheapest way across the channel is under a 40ft trailer if facebook is to be believed...

Yeah it would be a good idea for a little trip. Just need to try and justify it. The other half would already be there visiting so it could be a supris for her

According to the EuroStar website, cheapest one-way fare is late July for £67. To Toulouse? That's fantastic value. I recall they calculate in the local French end of the travel if you book the entire trip as one (ie, don't get off at Gare du Nord and find/book another train). Maybe that's why. OP - Midland mainline from Sheff straight into London St P, Eurostar terminal is there, all aboard for a cheap trip to Toulouse. What car is it? ETA - Megabus is horrendous.

Remember to apply for a visa at the french embassy lest you might be deported back to Independent UK ...

I'm not up on EuroStar, I thought it just went London to Paris, like the EuroTunnel does Folkstone to Calais. :/ Yes, it's much more expensive to go to Toulouse. I wonder if the local trains from Calais to Toulouse would be cheaper?

I vaguely recalled that if you buy a Eurostar ticket you get the onward part of your journey from Gare Du Nord in Paris on any TGV train for free (or included). Anyway, cars, not trains.
