Inspired by grizz, I was up early today to hit the car boot. Unfortunately I forgot to factor in the length of time between a baby waking up and then being able to leave the house, so got there late, still busy but most of the good stuff had gone. Did buy him this New Ray Kenworth though, had a fleet of these as a kid, and he's not left it alone all day Went in the Astra since it was just us two, got a bit worried as it runs cool and today was a scorcher, but all good, it actually got up to a proper temp for a change

Child no3 was suffering with his teething last night, and as such didn't want to settle so took him out in the car, always works. Went to Bangor for something to eat and sat at Port Penrhyn, nice and chilled out and took the scenic route home.

Not looked at this for a while, decided to stick the GSi wheels back on, for a change if nothing else as the steering is pretty heavy on the 16s anyway. Found a nice surprise in the drivers wheel arch waiting for me... So need to find someone to weld that up, noone my way will do it properly, only an MOT type patch that will need doing again in 12 months. Not perturbed, I decided to change the front bumper over, as I had a slight accident involving having to drop off a kerb backwards ripping it off. This is a spare, no foglights and at 100 a set I wont be buying any either, and a rush paint job but better than a saggy cable tied on bumper. Also picked up a passenger today in a charity shop, wanted one for a while so he's now chief of vehicle security and navigator.

It is what it is, trouble is I have nowhere to store it undercover, I cant dismantle it whwre it is, I cant weld, I cant find anyone to do a proper job rather than a patch, so it looks like the end won't be too far away for it. I know it needs shocks, engine swapping out, essentially I want to tear it down and start again.

Took this out for the first time in a while today, little 1.4 doesn't like being 5 up with a boot full of buggy and shopping but still went ok, went to Llanrwst for a walk (on the limit of our lockdown area) and went conker picking, then went shopping and took it for a wash. Turns out the full tube of silicon i used to seal the sunroof shut has done the job, and for the first time in 11 years I didn't get wet or have to sit on a towel

Not much gone on with this in the last year, no shows, and being in one of the few industries that have boomed in the pandemic ive had no time to drive it or clean it. Mot runs out in Jan, its on a covid extention anyway but like I said, if I've done 100 miles this year its been lucky. The Mondeo however got a new set of shoes and a set of wheel spacers, so I'm calling that done now, apart from a remap at some point.

Bought a load of things for this for the MOT, wipers, service kit, found a genuine touch up paint (don't think it will be big enough ) Passenger door wouldn't unlock the other day while cleaning it, had to rip the door card off with the door shut so bought new clips, greased the lock up which seems to have cured it. Stuck the standard back box on as the garage my mate uses hates loud cars. Also rubbed down the spare wheel well and waxoyled the back end while the exhaust wasn't in the way. Spotlights are coming off as they're pulling the grill out and I have no fabrication skills or tools to make brackets, I'm in the market for a wheel change as well, I like my 16s but they're kerbed to hell, and will take a lot to refurb. I like the standard GSi alloys but they're a bit boring. Still in need of a GSi drivers seat but since they've all gone like my last one or they're 300 a pair ill wait. MOT wise I know there's a hole in the front wheel arch, don't know if its a fail but will be getting done either before or after the MOT next Monday. Hoping to borrow my mates ramp for an hour while its there to wire wheel and waxoyl the rest of the underneath as well. Oh and I bought a new gear gaitor. Exciting times Before Xmas I did genuinely consider letting it die as ive had it 11 years now, but considering its only fail to proceed was fixed with a 50 quid box and a 40 quid clutch, and fail to stop qas fixed with a free master cylinder i don't think I'm through with it yet. The rust on the back arch is advancing, I'm hoping it just festers quietly until I can throw some money at it, or i find somewhere to have a go myself. Boring update but keeps me up to date

So today was the day, and predictably:- Rust i expected, main beam was a bad connection, fog light was a blown bulb. The emissions was an air leak that I'd been after for a while, and was duly fixed with new vac pipe, which also brought my idle down to below 1k and made it stop popping and farting at idle. The strange one was the master cylinder. It definitely wasn't leaking before it went and I've never had any brake creep. We couldn't get the pedal to creep, and whilst the servo was damp, it didn't look like a leak from anywhere. My mechanic phoned the station, and after a lengthy conversation worked out that one fella doing the MOT had lifted the cap to check the level, spilt it down the servo, his assistant noticed this and failed it as a leak. The assistant had also presumed that if it was leaking, the pedal would be curse word without actually trying it. So one annoyed tester later, one relieved me that didn't have to fork out on a new master cylinder, although I will keep an eye on it, and a small choppy choppy weldy weldy time later it was good for retest about 14.00. Then I snapped the handbrake cable parking it outside one duly procured from the last factors on the list (noone stocks them any more) and it got a pass. Need to find the advisory oil leak, and my exhaust centre section is well past its sell by date, but will sort these in thr next few weeks. Very happy and still surprised, most of the fails were rectified in minutes, and the rust i knew was there. Did get bigger after we had a poke though. So all good for another year, and i stuck my noisy backbox on when I got home

Yeah just the one patch... just a rather large one by the time the prodding finished rest of it has surface rust, but he's said when I get some time off I can go down and borrow the ramp for a bit to wire wheel it down and reseal it, rest of it is structurally quite clean.

Today marks the start of a full week off work (its been a while) so me and daughter no2 gave my Irmscher wheels a quick refurb. Normally I sing the praises of App Gloss White from Halfords, but today it was absolutely wibblepoo. I was in a warm garage, with a warmed up can, and it had the consistency of water. Plenty of runs, so they definitely need redoing but got to the stage where I'd have really ruined them. Not sure if I like them or not, but the GSi wheels are also in dire need of a refurb. Still looking for a set of 17s, the right set is yet to come along. Also scrubbed back and waxoyled anything I could get to in the arches and underneath while changing them, didn't take pics as it was dark and id had enough its had its first run since the MOT to my mums (she's disabled so I'm her bubble) seems really hesitant, ive done thr plugs and leads, had the ignition timing checked and found all the vac leaks, would a dizzy cap and rotor arm that needs replacing cause it? I'm having issues finding a matching pair to go on it.

Been back to the garage today, you have no idea how hard it is to find the right distributor cap for what is really not that rare a car, I got quoted 68 plus vat from one supplier, ended up phoning through all my mechanics suppliers and one was found on a dusty shelf, for 11 quid. That and the rotor arm were in dire need of changing, he also adjusted my handbrake up properly, we just threw the cable on to get it through the retest, and while it was on the ramp I dropped the oil and did the filter as well. Also bought this marvellous piece of 90s McDonalds carparkness:- I'm hoping this gives what is a terrible stereo system a helping hand, ive got a decent head unit, and standard speakers which are tragic, trouble is on an Astra they have to be really shallow which limits choice on aftermarket and I'm absolutely useless at craft, so making adaptors is beyond me we'll see anyway when the wiring kit turns up.
