Not entirely sure you chaps would consider this retro, but from when I bought it in 2009 to now I just don't see them any more. I've been floating around for a while and signed up a while back, took some time to remember what email account I had used to sign up Anyway, she is a 1994 Mk3 Vauxhall Astra Merit, absolutely boggo basic (no PAS, Rev counter etc). Bought in a hurry after some roundabout hijinx resulted in a rather bent Sierra (my own fault, thought I was a drifting God at 18, then really bent it on a high kerb and realised I was a complete asshat). Anyway, 1 lady owner from new, 90k on the clock, one caved in side but 12 months ticket for £300. This is how it looked the day after I bought it, after getting some Wolfrace Voodoos from a friend This didn't last long, and a few months later it had a full GSI kit on the outside, and some 17's added. I'd never lowered a car at this point and was too scared to start messing however my bro bought me some -60mm springs, and told me not to be daft and so that got done, along with spending a whole weekend ripping out the entire interior to change it from disability badge blue to black, along with GSI seats. Apart from the odd wheel change it stayed like this until I happened upon some original GSI fanblade alloys and tried to go with an OEM theme, then a kind of rally theme due to where I was working at the time being over run with badgers and hitting at least two a week Anyway I digress. By 2015 it was really starting to get tatty and generally tired, I had put 60k on it at this point with just regular servicing, and had not encountered one single breakdown. She's been to both ends of the country several times tat hauling for friends (most notably a v6 engine which fell over in the boot, and emptied all its oil through the boot floor bung) so whoever followed me down the m6 that day I apologise profusely. Even managing a 13 miles dash in 10 mins the day my daughter was born, and bringing her home again. Lots of brilliant memories in this car that far outweigh its tiny money value. Anyway after the birth of said offspring, it was time to get a car with 4 doors which is when the unhealthy and frankly ridiculous fascination with Vectras started, and this got laid up on my grandads drive for over a year... Then a rather large change in circumstances happened which meant selling the daily Vectra for a house deposit, so the Astra needed recommissioning. 2 lower arms, droplinks, top mounts, exhaust (kudos to friend for making me one), and a change in wheels sees it as it was until New Year's Day when she let me down for the first time... Although I do look after it she's no show queen and does get taken wherever I feel like taking her sometimes, also started to try an early 90's theme here with the venoms, and orange indicators Anyway after getting home life sorted to a degree she's been a kind of emergency backup, and last October the daily Vectra shat it's water pump, so she was pressed back into it again. However New Year's Day I was taking the daughter to grans, and coming down a not inconsiderable hill there was a complete and total failure of the braking system, pedal to the floor. So after managing to pull up safely, the daughter was walked the rest of the way and I went back to have the car recovered home, and she's been there since . Being a single full time dad I only tend to get the light evenings to work on cars so hopefully there will be some progress soon, it had new pads/discs last MOT so before it sees the road again it will have new rear shoes, cylinders, master cylinder and brake lines. Also now I can get insurance on a classic basis, I really think it's time the 170k 1.4 was retired now, it's just so tired but don't want to go the normal red top/Saab turbo or v6 route so still not sure there either. Anyhow, let me know what you guys and girls think, I know she's a shed but she's become part of the family now

Looks great! As you say there's just not as many kicking about as there used to be.
Engine wise what about the "small block" 1.8? 135hp, can be tuned for more, fairly lightweight which will help handling.

Cheers guys, it's something a bit different from the norm around here, although hearing "mate has that got a red top" every 5 minutes gets boring lol. qwerty - I was debating building a Corsa GSI C16XE for it, little 16 valver that will Rev to curse word is right up my street, finding a good C/X18XE is getting harder and harder these days. Ideally I want an Astra Sport to use as a doner for engine/interior and possibly a disc rear brake setup, but these seem to be thinner on the ground than actual GSi's these days

I have had proper retro in the past though, my grandad bought me this '74 1200 in 2007. It had been fully restored with fibreglass panels, new interior, chromed up engine then left to stand in a drive for 10 years, the guy my grandad bought it off told him he'd done all the welding, and just needed a few bits for the MOT. What he meant by welding was expanding foam, bits of cardboard, isopon and copious amounts of underseal so it was sold as a resto project I did get a clean 19k K10 Micra with the money but my grandad stole that, so I had his Sierra

Cheers fella, yours looks well there Weirdly it's been sat 4 months so I threw a battery on it yesterday and it fired straight up but it now has a brake pedal :/ couldn't go further than the end of the drive and it's still getting an overhaul, do we reckon that points to knackered master cylinder seals?

Had an exciting (not) day on this last week, first up the braking problem. Turns out its not the master cylinder, one rear cylinder has let go completely and the other is quite weepy, so got them and new shoes on order. So moved onto the next issue, quite a lot of handbrake travel. There's a common problem on mk3s that the guide will shear the metal on the tunnel, and sure enough... An but not the end of the world. So by this point I'd taken the rear interior out and and decided to remove the front as well, give it a dam good clean. Really wish I hadn't. 2 nice holes in my floor pan and a wet soundproof sponge. The scuttle leaked for a few weeks until I sorted it out, and the top most layer of carpet/soundproof was bone dry so I though it had sorted itself out, obviously not. Luckily it's localised to those 2 holes and the bulkhead and while I'm told they're easy repairs a a garage won't take it on as they say it's just not worth the hassle. So does anyone in the Conwy/North Wales area know a welder?

Mojo really went after finding all that but managed to come to an arrangement with my grandad. Send the Astra in to a friends garage, get it welded, brakes serviced all around, get a ticket on it, and I give him my e39 520i. Result as I planned on selling it to pay for the work anyway, and this way I still get to borrow it for the longer trips. Anyway, spurred on by the fact it's going to be fixed (28th it goes in, and it's booked for an MOT on the 4th) I decided to do all the little jobs that I put off, so it's had a rocker gasket and new breather hoses (I fitted an atmospheric breather filter when I was younger cos it adds like 20bhp right?). Got it running nicely again without dripping on the drive, so got the wheels off and gave them a Poundland refurb, £10 including sandpaper no less. Also started tidying up the bodywork at this point and had the grill/bumper off for a tidy up, and I also resprayed the slam panel as it had a bit of surface grot. Refitted with new headlights, new pressed plate, new mudflaps and half tidy wheels I'm really chuffed with how it looks, tidier than it has in a very long time. I've wet vacced the interior after I pulled it, treated the surface rust and repainted the foot wells up to where needs welding, I'll do that the day I get it back as I get the feeling ill be pulling a late night the day before the MOT refitting it all. Also has a brand new cat, bit of an expense but having also bought a cherry bomb purely because I was after an exhaust with a 3" rolled tip anything that can quieten it down will be welcome. Anyway have a couple of pics. Seats came up really well, still need to find someone to repair that bolloxed bolster though And that's where we are at now, waiting for its appointment with the light stick

Looking good! Wheels have come out well, is that genuinly poundland spray? I tried some poundland primer, and it came out lumpy! Wasn't expecting much though tbf.

It is genuinely rubbed back with Poundland paper, primered with Poundland primer and 3 wheels painted with pound land white, I ran out on the fourth and used the halfords appliance white I bought for the bumper and grill (a 99.9% match for glacier white). Only issue I found was Poindland stuff reacted with halfords laquer so they are for now unlaquered, but the point of the excercise was to see if I'd get on with the colour, which I do so a better refurb will be done in due course

So it went in for welding, 3 patches and the handbrake bracket bent back, welded then reinforced so it can't pull through again, also had new shoes/cylinders/drums and handbrake cable. Passed its MOT last Thursday with no issues at all. That night the familiar pressure drop from the pedal reasserted itself so armed with the master cylinder I had managed to get hold of I went back to my friends garage. This change was supposed to take around 30 mins. Four and a half hours later I had brakes again. The master just would not budge off the servo, we had a 4 foot pry bar, a hammer everythin, and in the end we got the plasma cutter out. Just as we got to the point where we'd cut all the way through there was a thud and the rust seal broke. Definetly think this may have been the issue... So that was done. Noticed I had a slight (read copious flow) from the dizzy oil seal, so ordered one and that turned up the other night. Went to change it and realised there was no coolant in it. No evidence of peaks whatsoever so back to the garage for a Pressure test. Water pump is leaking so a new belt and pump have been ordered. Needed doing anyway but I'd have like time to recover financially before it going . And last nights fail, alternator atopped charging, noticed no battery light at all with ignition on, this is part of the charging circuit in these and the alternator isn't very old so cleaned every earth I could find, no joy so slammed the bonnet last night and sat sulking. This morning I put a charged battery on to get me 2 miles for an appointment. Guess what appeared on the dash.... I hate intermittent electrical faults Anyway it's on the road now, although minimal driving will be done until the pumps been changed cos I really don't want to cook it, we tested the headgasket and besides blowing slightly past the rings it's all good. Have some pics of MOT day Interior back in And a short trip out to Conwy after I had taxed it

I nearly bought one of these when I was younger and always wanted a GSI rep, settled for a corsa in the end, once again GSI-a-like. I'm quite tempted by a B204ed one of these. I'd love to B204 it but I'm properly retarded when it comes to wiring. Would be fun cos everyone knows it's not real, I don't pass it off as such if anyone asks cos you look a numpty trying to hit 60 in less than 50 minutes. Haven't seen another in white in a good few years, it was back on the road 1 day and one parked outside the garage we were in changing the master cylinder, I left a note

Last year I had to buy a cheap van to tide me by and got hold of a mk4 Astra van. I have this tendency where I will read every possible article avalible in regards to conversions, modifications or other such nonsense and then do absoloitely nothing with this recently acquired information, so it seemed only fitting to read everything about Vauxhall Saab conversions, ok well not everything but a fair anoint anyway.
From my reading a few parts are required but the most bespoke are, a single custom engine mount and an adapter for the looms.
There is a few places selling the items required for about £180. I am lead to believe that it's a very easy swap and I am incredibly tempted to have a go at one myself but I can not justify a 6th vehicle.
Actually, if I remember correctly there is a mk3 GSI on another Vauxhall forum that documents what's required and the gains that can be had. Recent readings of a sub £1000 Saab B204 on here with somewhere around 500bhp really got my interest.
Either way, cool Astra!

Looking good! If you were thinking of an engine conversion, as long as you have an engine loom it should only be a handful of wires, maybe a relay for the fuel pump, I would imagine pretty similar to fitting a redtop. I struggled with the wiring when doing my Corsa B C20XE, but that was my own fault for over complicating it all, putting in extra switches for added security. I think the man to talk to would be woodenspatulas. He knows all about Saab goodness in Vauxhalls What was the deal with the head gasket? Did you swap the engine out? If so, have a crack at doing the gasket with the engine out, 8Valve engines are ideal starting points for learning. Very very hard to get them wrong. Always turn over by hand a couple of times after doing a cambelt, that way you can feel if the pistons hit the valves. Spin it over on the starter and it's wrong and you'd bend the valves.

Ah I know wooden-spats from VVOC no the headgasket is fine it turned out to be a weepy water pump under pressure, full Cambelt kit going on on Monday. That was the plan if I needed a headgasket though, throw a good engine in and take mine to bits to understand the inner working and how to do timing

Finally, after 7 years of looking managed to find a straight white 3 door passenger door met a very nice chap in Whitchurch who held it for 2 months for me, I'd never have got it in the BMW. Just got to change the wiring loom, mechanism, glass, both door handles and the speaker I've ordered a tool to pull the pins, last time I mullered them with Mole grips and a hammer, bought new ones of them as well. Going from this (wasn't me, one of the reasons I got it cheap) To this Tiny bit of grot but that's under the weather strip so I'll treat that before hand. Just waiting on the tool and a second pair of hands, there's some serious weight in these doors

Took a few hours, a special tool for the pins and some brain work to get the window mech back in, but it's on, so now have 3/4 of a straight car :lol:
