Is a Facet solid state electric fuel pump of any interest - pretty sure I have one lying around unloved that my mate used to drive his 2L Subaru conversion.

We’ve got a Carter pump that we’ve used so far. So unless the Facet does better things than that, I don’t suppose it makes much difference? But thanks  |

So stupid question time..... The full flow filter was fitted where we could with the existing oil lines, but obviously it’s a terrible position. One thought for a new position would be higher up on the cradle and then the hoses can run upwards without having to pass between the exhaust pipes. As in this terrible sketch  The question is they are normally fitted at the bottom of the engine (but normally this makes sense anyway in a engine bay), so I was wondering if we will get problems with oil draining back into the sump because it’s higher than the connections? Bajas run roof coolers, lots of people fit external coolers behind the doghouse and in fact the doghouse oil-cooler is at a similar height. When you turn the engine off, oil drains back anyway in any engine by gravity, so I think I’m overthinking it... but am still curious |

As you already know I know nothing, but from that disadvantage point I would guess that with the frighteningly realistic artist's impression of the potential new position I suspect there would be a degree of greater effort needed to both pump up and then to pump back up out of the unit, and that much up might actually be a bit much of the old uppy pumpy. Theres no way it could be like your sketch but brought down lower and maybe mounted at the back of the bar rather than the side? Like I said though. I know curse word all. ==== Just had a quick chat with my art and visual effects department. They've just rendered this on the triple quad core GFX system..  |

On most remote oil systems i've seen, the filter ends up higher then the block. So my guess is that it isn't that bad?
Most filters don't have a non return valve anyway and are emptying themselves when not running.
Having it at your (and QMs) place would be worse then an empty filter after standing i guess?.
Btw, i might have missed it, but is this the stupid fast engine already? Or another one? Can't keep up with all the awesome work you guys are doing!

there is not much room around the exhaust, so to fit lower would either clash with the exhaust or be close to the ground  You can see there is space for the lines to come up and out there though Another option is to mount it further forward, somewhere around the gearbox... but then the lines get longer and there is greater risk of damaging an oil line People have made/bought brackets to stop the oil lines hitting the exhaust  But there isn’t much to mount anything to anywhere really |

This should hopefully be the stupid fast one We built the engine, it went away for exhaust, it’s back It runs and the cam has been run in No room for another!! We’ve got the 1300, this one... and a 1200 to get rid of (so I suppose once that’s gone......  ) Thanks, we put our pants on one leg at a time like the rest of you guys |

Just looked, so the oil filter has the anti-drain back in it,
So it would only be the lines that could drain...

I don't think it matters much where it's put. Put it in the safest place with the shortest lines.

On a Beetle with full bodywork,you'd tend to hang the filter off the bumper mount, and if the rear metalwork is cut away, a bracket to hold it off the exhaust flange for number 4 cylinder.

Typically, was away for the weekend, so no actual progress! But sorted some bits in readiness.. The dynamo isn’t charging, the long term goal is to fit an alternator but for now if we stick with the dynamo we can swap between the 1300 and the 2ltr easily, so don’t want to buy a new one, found one cheap  Ordered some heavy duty rear gearbox mounts, which need an earlier cradle... for £13 I wasn’t expecting quality (which was lucky ) we will have a look for an old German one in autojumbles  Also got another oil temp sensor from acewell (it was cheaper than an oil change, which we’d have to do if we wanted to use the one in the 1300) and got a sump plate as well, which angles the sensor so should offer a bit of protection if needed.. It won’t line up with the deep sump though, but we’ll see what it looks like when we swap the oil next  And the other thing, mungo had a motorcycle lift that he used to swap his engine. It didn’t really work with the beetle enginebay so we bought it off of him  Was thinking that we could support the engine and push the Fug away and the engine should be fairly stable..... but whilst away had another idea, so picked up some casters  And sorted some bits of scrap I got the other month  And made a thing  It’s not great, some of the welds went porous (which I think is because of the shroud (?) ) so no close ups but it looks like it might work  And the motorcycle lift just lifts out of the frame if needed |

I've yet to work out what the exact difference is between a dynamo and an alternator. I should look it up but as I've only ever had alternators, even on the Humber, it's never been a quest for knowledge I've particularly needed.
My best guess is a dynamo is a bit like a friction based charge generator... like those old bike lights with a small wheel pressed against the bike wheel rim which can only ever regenerate slightly less power than the power input, and an alternator is a fancy electromagnetic device that creates 10× the input thanks to magic crystals cloned from a crashed ufo.

That’s pretty much it Dynamos are older, simpler, heavier, the brushes wear more (they rub on the copper bars of a commutator all the time) and won’t charge the battery at tickover. They also mostly have a separate regulator Alternators are magical, new and shiny They don’t wear the brushes as quick (brushes rub constantly on sliprings instead) but are more efficient at charging the battery and will charge at tickover even (that’s mostly the reason to change) |

Few bits done... Lucy is working 3 in a row, so slept all day until 5, so I worked a bit, Tom came and helped me this afternoon then we started working on the Fug around 4, and could make some noise at 5 We dropped the engine out, the motorbike lift thing worked really well, it’s pretty stable and without any bodywork we can move the engine around and it balances on the stand   We took the rear gearbox mount off, and found the first problem we’ll need to fix, the engine cradle mounted to the gearbox cradle using 2 of the mount bolts. But the older style cradle doesn’t have those mount holes so we’ll need to remake the plates and mount elsewhere.  We welded the lugs to the forks, spent ages making sure they were equal side to side and welding them up  But when we mounted it all up we’ve got the angles a bit wrong and the lugs are a bit low.... don’t think it’ll be a huge problem so suspect we’ll leave it for now and sort it when we eventually strip the frame for paint/powder coating   We bolted the new, older gearbox mount in   And welded a bracket to the frame for fuel filter and fuel pump to mount onto  So first job tomorrow is sorting the engine cradle mounts  Then fitting the crutch properly, swap the dynamo and the engine can go back  Then sort the fuel pump, filter and lines...... but Lucy will be asleep until lunchtime so we’ll have to see how we get on |
