No that's great, any info is a result as far as I'm concerned.... I get the impression they weren't great as supplied and were very easy to bodge!!
When it has been and come back from the blasters I will put the engine and transaxle in position and check those diagonal bars out. If it all works together I think we'll reinstate them anyway! Then just make a engine cage to fit (the fug2 cage looks neater and with the cannons we have fitted I should get away with something like that)
Thanks

This afternoon I slunk off early, borrowed the scouts trailer, loaded it up and when Tom finished school we Tom the frame to the blasters! He has a cool shop sign! We got there whilst Chris had popped out, so we unloaded and waited.... and I looked at the engine cradle that we had, and that had cut off tubes, so the engine cradle must have been welded in at some time. But that won't work with the engine, so we'll have to have a play! So that's the before photos..... afters in about a weeks time!!

Forgot to say, he doesn't prime after the blasting, so I need to get some aerosols....
Should I use weld-through? It'll stay in primer for a while (my welder mates wife is expecting a baby any day, so I need to wait until he's back on his feet again) so do I need something that doesn't absorb moisture? And, any recommendations?
TIA John

Personally id go for a tin of high zinc primer, thinners and a brush from most steel stockists, i think i payed 25 quid for 5l tin and thined down it goes alooong way ive done a chassi, gates and an engine bay thers still loads left in the tin. If you really want to spray it rustolium cold glavenizing spay is 90% zinc and goes on nice but is much more expensive. Dan

I'd give it a quick coat of anything, what logicaluk said would be good.
You are going to be doing a lot of cutting and welding before its finished, the bits you know about and probably countless smaller mods where you want to mount things. You will also be handling it a lot so any paint you put on is going to get countless scratches in it.
My thought would be a quick coat of something to give a little bit of protection, but don't worry about keeping it perfect. Build the car, do the welding and cutting and don't be paranoid about scratching it or always re-protecting it where its scratched or you did some work, then once its finished strip it down, have it blasted again and immediately paint it properly once, then final re-assembly.
Trying to prime it now and keep that on for the final paint will end up an awful mess.
I wouldnt waste money on weld through primer, where its going to be welded clean it back to bare metal with a flexible disc on a grinder, clean metal is best for welding anyway. A quick coat of the same thinned brush on primer after welding to control corrosion.
Its your car though so do it how you prefer.

Got some Rustoleum 1085 zinc primer ordered a couple of kilo tins last weekend, didn't get confirmation that they'd shipped it, so chased and they were out of stock so cancelled and managed to buy a kilo tin from a local (ish) Brewers.... Picked the frame up this afternoon, and had managed to get the use of the scout hut (perks of being a scout leader) to get some protection onto the bare metal before it gets wet and goes back outside.... opened the tin of paint, and it's half full!! (Because it's weight not volume!) so the tin that looked like it might just about be big enough isn't..... and I need to go and find some more first thing before doing scout stuff tomorrow! Anyway, a few photos of the start..... And found a number stamped into the frame, so will check if that's the vin number or maybe a UVA number (Photo was taken to check it out.... but I can't read the numbers now, so think it's safe to post the photo instead

Frame looks quite tidy. how much did you thin down the primer? Dan The frame is fairly tidy, just the extra bracketry and tubes are horribly welded on. We left the primer thick to, hopefully, give it some protection when it's back outside again John

Managed to get some more paint, so we went and finished painting the frame and the side bars. Then changed the wheels on the car (winters to summers) and did a few other bits with Tom, so he can get the mechanics badge at scouts (he only got invested this week) Need to take the frame back up the farm, then work out positions for the seats, steering wheel and pedal box, check out the bodged frame tubes etc. Before organising a welding session with Mark. Some days are better than others.... Finished work early, so went to move the buggy with Tom. We took the seats, pedalbox and steering wheel and the seat adjusters and had a play. The seat adjusters have 9.5" of forward/backward adjustment, so we played with the seat position and could actually adjust it far enough for both me and Tom to sit in (the adjusters will make the seat a bit higher, but we can lower the floor under the seat to compensate) and by moving the pedal box 4-5" forward/back we can both work the pedals.. This is the pedal box markings (sorry, photo is more for my reference) And the seat positions We then loaded the frame into the borrowed trailer to take back up the farm, but popped home first to check it against the engine. Reversing off of the road onto the drive is a nightmare, so I unhitched and pushed the trailer onto the drive..... put the brakes on, it the extra weight of the frame meant that the trailer wasn't stopping.... so with the choice of a fence on the house, the fence got modified Have a photo of a recently knocked down fence! All this whilst Lucy was having a sleep before her night shift! When she awoke (properly, not just from the sound of smashing feather edge!) we repaired the fence with some spare that was behind the shed (Then trimmed the tops) then checked the engine in the frame All the cut off tubes would foul on the vw engine or exhaust! So we reloaded, took the frame to the farm, put the engine away, put tools away It fits perfectly into the trailer.... but won't when we start fitting suspension etc Now it's beer o'clock!

Today we had a look at the gearbox.... Didn't take a before photo, but this is one as we started We dropped the oil, and it wasn't too bad, bit of emulsion in there, but that's to be expected as I don't think it's done much for 10 years, and a bit of swarf on the sump plug.... But didn't seem too bad, which is just as well as there isn't much we can do without the specific tools! So we did some cleaning..... (I've just noticed the fragrant disregard for eye protection!) And got to this Then we stripped the pile of front hub assemblies, popped the ball joints, so they store a bit better... whilst marvelling at the thought that went into this thing! Then sorted some scrap, which I'll weigh-in this week in readiness for any potential purchases at the kitcar show in a couple of weeks! And now Tom is being scrubbed!

It would seem not everyone enjoys the aromatic fragrance of a well matured mineral gear oil!! Several candles have been lit and our clothing quarantined

The gearbox code tells us that we've got a 1600 1303s box, made on 17/2/73...... It's got a 3.8 final drive, the 1300 boxes are 4.3. Longer term we'll probably build another engine, but we've built a 1300 to go in first. The Fug is considerably lighter than a beetle so I'm hoping it's not going to be too overgeared. Any thoughts? (Having said that, it turned up with 31" BFG tyres, this box and a 1200 single port engine..... I must have been terrible!)

No real progress this weekend, I went for a jog round London (Here is me turning strava off as I cross the line, because it only counts if it's on strava ) But yesterday we did a bit of sight seeing, and went to HMS Belfast, Tom enjoyed the engines (or possibly the gun turret) most But was very interested in the machine shop, he was coming up with elaborate plans to smuggle the machines away (Lucy and Ella had wandered off by now!)

Another weekend with little progress, It was Toms birthday on Saturday (so that's a year since we got the engine) so instead of working on the project, I have been making cakes with the wife Then went to the cinema, and a curry.... Then today we went to the national kitcar show, we saw a volksrod ahead of us in Towcester on the way there (I assume it wasn't Fad ?) And Japfest was on at Silverstone so we passed a lot of interesting cars on their way to that, and the way back... At Stoneleigh, Tom went drifting in a Westfield... We saw some interesting stuff, nearly got another steering wheel Got some good ideas for ours (Though I'm not sure we are ready for a Subaru engine just yet) (That was the only sandrail we saw there) We got a couple of carbide burrs ( I got given a die grinder the other week) bought a finger sander and a pile of belts (just need to dig out the compressor now!) and bought a couple of tools. And saw some cool cars! So next weekend is daughters birthday, so no progress at all that's car related (though we are doing some backwoodsy stuff!), we've ordered a few bits to sort the back brakes

So with both kids birthdays, and then this weekend I was on a course We seem to have stalled! That's not exactly true, we have been quietly sorting stuff, I didn't want to lose the disc brakes on the front, so from the start had it in mind to convert the rear to discs too. CSP and Empire do kits, and I was aware that 944 brakes could be fitted. The problem with the 944 conversion was that you end up with 5x130, and the fronts currently are 4x130. The problem with the other kits is quality and there doesn't seem to be much other than standard solid discs with these kits. Then I got hold of some early 944 rear brakes, and thought "well I'll run different hubs then! It's not like we'll carry a spare anyway!" Even the back plates are pretty straight! And then I got offered these, by a mate of a mate!! Appliance slots! In beetle 4x130.... so will bolt straight onto the drums we aren't using! So currently we are waiting to get a couple of type 3 rear hubs, which are 4x130 and will replace the Porsche hubs, then we need to redrill a set of 944 discs (which I don't have yet) and trial fit onto the buggy, as the track is greater with this back end than the drum one, and possibly machine the hubs to suit.... Maybe a bit early, but a retro ad! Then we need a couple of skinny slots for the front in 4x130 This week Tom is away with school but I'm going to try and get on with some electrolysis again!

Also this week, Tom got his first badge at scouts..... Mechanics badge!!! One of the other leaders had a good chat to him he other week about what he'd done for the badge and then was telling Tom about his son, who works as an apprentice for JLR and that week he had been stripping down 3 engines for photographers and engineers to measure stuff.... Not sure if it is something he wants to do, but he was interested... and definitely better than his career choice of 'bin man, because I won't have to do any writing' from before we found out about his dyslexia!
