It'd be better to be able to find a stock setup that'd work... or at least a combination of stock parts. That way if you ever need to swap the clutch again at least you'll be able to do it easily without needing access to an engineering firm EDIT: I think that might be what you just said. Only in diferrunt wurds Yeah I don’t know talking good like you, so my vocabulistics are limited to ‘I’ and ‘am’ and ‘Groot’ exclusively in that order.... So what I was saying was... I am Groot

Not sure I have my head around this, but on my MX5 flywheel with VW clutch plate set up there was an issue that the MX5 plate spec was was 8mm but the VW plate was 9mm so I just shimmed the pressure plate off the flywheel as it would not have disengaged otherwise, still working 1800 miles later. Could you do that and add a washer over the shaft to space the clutch centre off the flywheel? EDIT - ignore that, was thinking of a different problem - yours is not engaging, not, not disengaging I probably said it wrong up there somewhere... when the clutch is engages the car goes, but when you engage your foot with the clutch it disengages, I always struggle with that one

Where in the world are you, John? You've obviously got a good machine shop fairly local, but you need another flywheel to lighten and balance. You can get 200mm flywheels new but not sure of the quality. I've got one that came with a load of engine bits I bought a while back that you're welcome to if you can get it from me in the West Midlands, but it's a heavy beast! Needs some time on a big lathe to get the weight down... We are in Buckingham, so not that far.... After looking confused on Sunday night and lots of measuring last night I was allowed to throw money at the problem, so ordered a lightened flywheel, which means we may be running by end of weekend I have a few mates that could machine stuff, and first thought was shave a little off of the flywheel bolt, but it’s not a bit I want to fail, or worry about failing.

Awesome! I'd still take it to get it balanced to match your old one though - the complete rotating assembly will have been done in the past, starting g with the crank, then the flywheel, followed by the crank pulley then the clutch pressure plate. You don't want to upset that if you can help it, especially not with the rev capability of the motor!

We haz a new clutch friction plate And a shiny lightened flywheel! But haven’t found anyone who can do a quick turn around on balancing the flywheel and pressure plate Anyone know someone who’d balance it for us tomorrow?

So today I had to take Ella to orthodontist. But they called and she went In yesterday to have her braces removed and only needed to pop backk for her retainer, and they moved the appointment forward to 8.30 too! So she drove me to the dentist and home, and by 9.30 I was drinking a brew with Lucy before she went to bed (imagine trying to sleep in this heat ) So since I hadn’t bothered to organise any work, I called another engine place this morning, and spoke to a really helpful bloke (he sounded older, and I’m sure I could hear a brown overall over the phone ) he said he’d be surprised if the flywheel would need balancing and thought it should be ok, but anyway he’d have to send it away, as they don’t do it in-house and the balancer would probably want a loose crankshaft too. We haven’t got a spare 8 dowel crankshaft, so we need to sort one of those or go to a specialist aircooled engine shop, which will slow everything down... so decision made, we’ll build it up, and take it out in the winter if we need to. So we have been plodding away, because it’s too hot to do much more than plod! To hot to lug a big old beetle engine about... so we started by bolting the flywheel on Last look at shiny It’s so easy with the torque master Clutch built up And engine in! We did have a casualty, I’d tacked the casters onto the dolly Then we went for drive, we popped to Mark at the forge and he made us a couple of brackets..... which meant we didn’t make noise at home! (Imagine trying to sleep in this heat, whilst some idiot and his son clank about under the bedroom window! ) Then picked the flaring tool up from the shed at the farm Door blew shut whilst I was in there, reminded me of Korn Freak on a leash! Then we went to Earls and they made us a clutch flexi line, Tom chose a new colour Then we’ve fitted that, and bled it up and have a working clutch We started fitting the fuel lines, but have the wrong size ends for the braiding, so have wrapped them in insulating tape and will order the right size finisher/end things later... we had 2 that were right! Connected the throttle cable as well, now waiting for the sun to lose a bit of heat (in the afternoon it comes round the front of the house, so it’s roadting for a few hours now!) Hopefully more in a bit

Poddled around some more, put the engine cradle back on And fitted the new plates to the gearbox cradle. Wired the fuel pump up temporarily Will be wiring it up with the mk1 golf relay, but wanted to try it The timing needs setting, the coil is cable tied to the leads!! We can have a look for a clamp at bugjam (and see how to mount it best too) But we went up the road, about a mile... first attempt Toms cap flew off so we had to stop and find that then we actually got more than 100yds up the road Throttle is sticking a bit, It’s surging a bit, so carbs need setting up And when we got back there was a line of oil drops, so that needs investigating....... But..... Ermagard it’s quick, didn’t quite lift the front (but lifted a long way) It tried to break traction on the back briefly, which is pretty good going with 10.5” tyres on a hot road I reckon

I'm glad it's running for both of you.
It sounds a bit notch y in the first video?

I'm glad it's running for both of you. It sounds a bit notch y in the first video? I suspect it's still on the jets for the wilder cam, so not running perfectly until it's out of the idle circuit. Drive for a couple of hundred miles then retorque the heads, and check valve clearances regularly. Edit: if you're running chromoly pushrods, set them to zero clearance when cold - no up and down movement but just able to spin them.

Yeah, thought it was missing a bit low down but seems to clear when revved Hadn’t considered the milder cam making it rich And it’s only static timed at the mo, it’s still running the 009, so unless we find something in the autojumble tomorrow, will set the timing for that.... Think we have to hold revs at 3000rpm and time it to 30-32 degrees? We’ve been out to see where the oil leak was from, when we got back home I pushed it off of the road and it left a line of oil down the drive. It didn’t drop any more after we’d parked up, had a look and it doesn’t seem to have leaked from anywhere (?) and looking at the oil drips it hadn’t leaked before we pushed it backwards... so we are wondering if it’s just from where it’s been breathing? As we’ve got a breather box to fit, on advice Thinking of fitting it here, with breathers to the heads and back to the breather pipe?

Yep, spot on. 3000rpm and 30-32 deg.
An 009 is fine - it's what I use, still on points and condenser!

As for the breather, each head to the box and a third from the fuel pump block off should suffice. Mine leaks from the oil filter - I've got a new one to fit and the oil as well, just no time to do it!
