Apparently Vaseline is much better to use than grease. Something about it breaking down into the oil better. That's what's always recommended after a Rover V8 rebuild, so I'm guessing will hold true for most (old fashioned) engines where the pump needs a prime.

Went to the NEC yesterday, got to meet @grumpynorthener peteh1969 jimspolicev8sd1 samta22 and blackpopracingWe missed RetroWarwicK ChasR and scmick you were either deep in conversation or off somewhere else Really enjoyed the day, and once I’ve got over being mugged for parking will remember it fondly Thanks to everyone for taking the time to chat, and great to meet you all, Hope everyone had a good weekend and is home now Today we’ve had a play in the garage, firstly we sorted the pile of scrap which I’ll take and weigh in in the morning. That cleared a load of room, and meant we could actually get to the engine! We fitted some spacers to the fan shroud, we bought some in the end as every time I drove past Marks he was off somewhere else. We then fitted some baffles between the pairs of baffles, on the underside of the engine that we’d forgotten... they stop the air blown from the fan shroud from just blowing out between the barrels... but that meant removing the rockers and a couple of pushrod tubes Primed the oil pump with Vaseline and fitted Then fitted the full flow filter We fitted the air filters There were witnesses for the trumpets on the base plate, so assumed that was right..... carbs are a bit of a black art to me We couldn’t fit the tinware behind the fan pulley, as there is no room with the full flow pipe work, don’t think that’ll be too much of an issue in a buggy We cleaned the exhausts and gave them a quick coat of vht to tidy them up a bit, and then bolted them on But to fit them we also needed to remove the tinware under the barrels. Not sure if we should try to refit these when we sort a proper system for it, it think it’ll be ok for running in the cams Few bits left to do, have been told that the mechanical fuel pumps are good to about 160hp. So we’ve got a spare one, I’ll order a Bakelite stand and we can fit that So I’ve ordered a few little bits.... oil pressure switch, fan belt, etc Hopefully we’ll be about ready for a start next weekend Also picked a bellhousing up, with a starter fitted Which should come in handy without swapping engines in the Fug.

Nearly there! I used those lower tins just trimmed around the j-tubes. Not as good as standard, but probably better than nothing! I'd seriously consider an electric pump, something with a decent regulator - I used to have a Holley Blue pump with a Red regulator on my race car, as IDAs are very finicky about pressure. IDFs are a bit more forgiving, so the Facet cube pump I've got with my 2007cc motor in my Beetle works just fine. It might be getting the Holley stuff later this year tho...

I’d definitely go electric pump & regulator . My twin carbs seem alot better with them .

A mate has offered me a Carter pump and filter, it’s 3.5psi And new in a box, he didn’t get round to fitting it... I’ll pick this up then, and we can use it for starting then modify the Fug for an electric pump (also mount the fuel filter to the frame instead of the engine... so we don’t need to move too much when we swap engines (And if it’s not up to the job, it’ll already be electric when we fit a better pump)

Aha, good to see more progress. ...if for no better reason than it's like a dry build for me throwing my engine together and it saves me trawling YouTube for hillbilly "How aye builds my Folkswaggin motah" vids that don't show what I need to know

What are you going to build?

What are you going to build? Yeah, just trying to drag together a thousand disparate parts and pretend I know what I'm doing and that there's nothing left forgotten. I blame neilsdavies. And this thread Gonna hopefully be a 1776 with twin 40s Like I know what any of that means

Yeah, rotaries are wizardry and run by goblins or dragons. No pistons? Magic, I tell thee! Seriously, I'd encourage anyone with an ounce of mechanical knowledge to build their own VW engine. They're relatively easy, and there's lots of knowledge out there. And twin carbs just look the puppies swingers...

A mate has offered me a Carter pump and filter, it’s 3.5psi And new in a box, he didn’t get round to fitting it... I’ll pick this up then, and we can use it for starting then modify the Fug for an electric pump (also mount the fuel filter to the frame instead of the engine... so we don’t need to move too much when we swap engines (And if it’s not up to the job, it’ll already be electric when we fit a better pump) That'll be perfect for running the engine in the Fug as well as testing - they're widely used on big capacity aircooled lumps as they're internally regulated to 3.5psi Just be careful when mounting it using the large "P" clip and don't tighten it round the body too much as it can nip the internals Try and get hold of a MKI Golf GTi fuel pump relay - about £20 from eBay/VW Heritage. They're a nice simple and safe way of running an electric pump - they prime the pump for 2 seconds when you turn the ignition on, and then stop the pump. When the engine is running they rely on the tacho signal to keep the pump running - if you stall (or worse) etc. then it automatically kills the pump. I need to catch up on this thread - I'm about 30 pages behind! Cheers, John

That looks a good safety feature, just had a search and found a wiring diagram The relay looks like this So; Pin 30 has a fused permanent feed Pin 15 is a signal wire from the ignition Pin 31 is ground Pin 31b is feed from ignition coil Pin 87 goes to the fuel pump When you switch ignition on, the feed on 15 switches 12v to 87, so the pump primes And when there is a signal on 31b 12v is again switched to 87 which means the pump continues to run And ordered a relay, thanks

Good on you both for a fantastic job. You must be both chuffed by the reaction it gets. May I suggest guides round the rear harness loops, so there is no chance that they can slide along the bar in the unlikely event of an incident.
