Bit of an update then... At the weekend I was on Dartmoor wildcamping, on a Scout Leader training course (That’s a Saunders jetpacker + for any retro tent spotters ) there was no Wi-fi or even phone reception, hence the slow responses Today, I went and sorted a lighting fault up the farm And then had a bit of a play with the Fug, just boring time consuming bits Sorted the bias bar and clevises, and tightened up the clutch pedal Fitted the rubber bush on the gear-lever (that we couldn’t find when we fitted it) Ran a temporary fuel line, and put a bit of fuel in to check for leaks on the fuel tap, which seemed ok. Refitted the throttle cable, and fitted the regulator onto the plate we welded lugs for.... but forgot photos But that’s 4 of the 8 things I had listed for the bank holiday... so hopefully it’ll be a good Friday

Next weekend I’m away... So it’s looking like good Friday to work on it next, but our plan is to, 1) Tighten up the clutch pedal assembly2) Fit the regulator but needs wiring 3)Run Some battery cable from battery to regulator, and then to starter 4)Fit a couple of earth straps 5) Run some fuel hose, and put some fuel in it!6) Reattach the throttle cable7)Start it up 8)Drive it The plan was to have it driving by Easter, so we might make it, if it all goes well

Brother in law Andrew came over today, and the three of us set about the electrics on the Fug. Ran a 16mm cable from the battery to the starter, and also a 6mm from battery to regulator, then on to the dynamo. We’d run some cables front to back anyway in flex conduit, so used them for oil pressure, rpm, coil live which ran to the engine, and battery light from the regulator We improvised a white board to write the wiring colours on And made a temporary dash panel using bits of the original panel so we had a cutout switch in case it went wrong... and wired a couple of fuses to give some protection. This is what happens when you have a couple of sparks doing the wiring Wired in the Acewell speedo We turned the key, and the speedo self checked, so got Tom to flick the starter which made him jump So thought we’d see if it would start, after pumping some fuel through It does, but won’t idle and is not running on all 4 It was just about starting to rain, so we popped home for lunch and it really started to rain. When we got back we put up a gazebo and started to have a look. Checked the plugs and leads, we had a good spark Tried to check the timing but couldn’t see the mark on the pulley with the strobe light, so twisted the dizzy until it was in the sweet spot between slowing the revs Checked for air leaks, one of the clips is missing on the manifold boots so we twisted some wire, but that didn’t seem to make much difference (but I’ll sort the clips properly) The carb is new, so that should be fine Lucy was asleep, so couldn’t go and fetch compression tester (will check over the weekend though) it checked the tappers and they weren’t tight, moved, and pulled the plug on 3 and without a spark could feel it chugging. It seems to chime in on no 4 when you rev it, but doesn’t want to idle A couple of mates popped up to help with the fault finding But in the end, we’d gone as far as we could today, so thought we’d see if it worked Because it wasn’t running well I drove, but the pedals are a bit close for me, so my leg clashes with the steering wheel when using the clutch But it works we got it up into 3rd, it steers, has brakes, clutch works (though we haven’t changed the hardlines yet) I think Tom enjoyed it! But it needs mudguards, particularly on a day like today! So the previous list is all crossed off, but now we have another Happy Easter!

Great 😎😎😎 Adjust the valves regardless. Something very overlooked on beetle engines 😊

Quickest way to check for a vacuum leak is to spray Wd40 around the manifolds, boots, etc with the engine running. If there is a leak, the revs will pick up/ stabilise when you spray where the leak is,as it temporarily seals it.

Excellent news (rough running notwithstanding). Always a good day when a car fires for the first time the pedals are a bit close for me, so my leg clashes with the steering wheel when using the clutch errrmm... so exactly like a "real" Beetle then

Little update, had to work today, but it was for a mate with a transit tipper. So after work went and picked up some more fugitive 4 bits. Didn’t get any good photos this morning due to the rain, but I brought the panels home (on the van roof so they didn’t get damaged any worse!) Mate put the frame in his workshop. It has been blasted and he is going to weld some floorpans into it for us to match the ones in this frame. Then we can swap the engine etc over.... mainly because the new frame has this And a Q plate! Whilst we were there, we did a quick compression check, with all 4 cylinders giving the same reading So going to order some new inlet manifold rubbers, and replace them. Can check manifold gasket as we change the rubbers. Don’t think it’s the carb gasket as it’s only on one side. And a new rotor and cap. The dizzy on the other engine is a 009 I think, as there is no vacuum advance mechanism. So I think the standard carb will be better for us (I believe 009s need a bit of revving when pulling away etc or they bog down) but we can check with that next. And before we order a new regulator, have been advised to polarise the dynamo

I hoped you might find a correctly registered frame considering the work you have put in, it would have been a shame to run into identity issues in future.
As for running, check for faults as you are, then set the valve clearances again, set the ignition timing then finally set up the carb. The carb being new means it wont be set up right.
One small point before you run it a lot, block those fan housing outlets that would have gone to the cardboard tubes to the heat exchangers, them being wide open will mean a lot less cooling air over the cylinders. Some people say to leave a hole in the cap to represent the air that would have gone to the heat exchangers but I havent bothered.

Yeah, I was a bit green when I first got it, checked online and it said ‘sandrail’ in the description... but it turns out that is the MOT description so wouldn’t hold up with DVLA. But didn’t want to turn the thread into another discussion on the 8 point rules.... so I’ve buried my head and we’ve kept on going whilst waiting (and hoping) something turns up at the right price.
Ordered a few bits today, so should have them for next weekend... so plan would be to sort the manifold rubbers and gaskets, check valve clearances, pull the distributor drive gear and reset 90 degrees (as lead #1 is where #2 should be... not huge problem but can be a little confusing) then set timing and try again.

Got finished early, it’s half term, bits turned up and it wasn’t raining.... So we got a bit of Fug time, changed the intake rubbers and gaskets and that seemed to sort the misfire. It’s a bit rough still but my strobe wasn’t working, so couldn’t time it up. But it idles now at about 1000rpm and just hunts a little bit Tom also had a drive (might need a booster seat ) and brakes seem to work (he said he pressed the brakes not clutch) Other than that, over the weekend we did some colouring whilst it was raining Traced a photo of the car, printed it and all had a go at designing a paint scheme.... Fug2 is black on the logbook, so we decided we’d go black for this paint job and then get it painted properly later on. A few of the designs (not the chosen one though) that’s a secret for now

After getting it running, it all seems a bit mundane... but there is loads left to do. We brought the Fug home on Friday night, in the daylight and sunshine... it was lovely, we then gave it a wash! Mostly because all the grinding and cutting dust is going rusty and so it looks a bit of a state. Didn’t get any time yesterday, but today we’ve been playing for most of the day, we wired up the headlights. Cut the pugs off of the loom (because it’s retrofit for a normal car) and soldered and heat shrinked a loom back to the battery box with the driver modules (will fit a plug somewhere here, so we can disconnect and remove the bonnet) Had a test, and there is a bit of video at the end Brother in law brought a gazebo over last week, so we’ve been using that since it has rained most of the day We drilled holes for switches in the dash, not 100% on where to fit them, but this was a bit of ally from a scrap bin, so if they aren’t right we can have another go Took the plastic covering off And found some dotpunch marks and a hole, so will definitely have to return to this at some point. We tested the dynamo, to see if that’s why it wasn’t charging. If you connect d+ and gnd to a battery, it should spin.. if you then connect the field winding df, it should spin faster. Which it did, but I think the dynamo has d+ and df labelled the wrong way round, as it only worked when you swapped those 2 terminals (?) there is a bit of video of that too. We fired it up, and started to adjust the timing with our new timing light, and ran out of fuel..... so couldn’t finish that, or check if it is now charging. I only put a couple of litres in, so there is the rest of a can in the shed. Will grab that and try to have another play during the week (Tom is off for another week anyway)

Great work. Respect to both of you!
Love the gas soldering irons. In blowtorch mode it even put out enough heat to crack my track rod ends off. Top bit of kit.

Few bits done, we ordered some bits... including some more cable, side repeaters and number plate light and some caterham style mirrors, which look good on drivers side But need to go quite far forward on passenger side to be visible past the a post tube :/ We made mounts for the rear lights And fitted them And then realised we’d made them wrong (ok, I’d designed them wrong!) and we couldn’t bolt them up.... so v2.0 is on the cards... But since we are going to have to redo this, do you think we should lose the extra fog, and the reverse light and just have a single rear light (tail/brake/indicator) and fit a reverse/fog elsewhere? We also got some glassfibre supplies (can you tell we weighed the scrap in ) So had a go at patching some of the holes, been reading a book... so start with a polyester sheet and blob gel coat in with some tissue, when it’s dry we can put a couple of coats of fibre glass over to add strength (overlapping an inch with each extra layer) Going to add a foam bar across the back of the bonnet too, as it’s quite flexible as a result of the filler hole Tom was given a torque wrench by a friend clearing out his dads garage (I used to fix old cars aged 16, and people in the village used to give me old tools....so this is the start of a good tool hoard and he’s only 11 ) Also got a cheap fuse box and relay box, so we can start sorting the wiring out And thanks to wightfug for a pile of fasteners and goodies

Good progress, rear lights look ok as is might look better with one of those fog reverse units mounted centrally, not sure, mock up time ! What about a pair of high level brake lights on the top tube for when the lower ones are covered in curse word ? Thanks for the updates James

Been quiet for a couple of weeks, Was on a course one weekend, and last weekend was hiking with daughter and explorers And found some abandoned ones And last Sunday was Toms birthday (marking 2 years of this project) and he wanted to go Karting This weekend is Ella’s 16th (so only a year until we start another thread ) but we have brought the Fug home and after Saturdays bbq we can play for the rest of the long weekend. Bits have been happening in the background, with help of a mate, we’ve swapped the chassis and are now running the other one. These things are definitely handmade! Nothing is quite the same between the two! We had patched up the clearcoat last time, and though not perfect, it has tidied the bonnet up a bit Got some new pressed plates made (and a stick on front one too) And since I’m currently driving a transit loan van, I seem to be able to sniff out scrap a bit easier.... customer asked me to clear a mezzanine, which I did, drove straight around to the scrappies and got just over a hundred quid from the weigh in Proper updates over the weekend!!

So when Ella is 17 will she get to drive the Fug' and I hope my welding is as good as Tom's! She doesn’t seem too keen I think it’d be ideal! She has made noises about beetles though (and Lucy rolled her eyes and wandered off ) Good luck with the welding! Will look out for the update

glad to see it coming on, yes lose the twin lights and go with singles with reverse fog mounted somewhere in the middle if possible. Dan
