Went up the farm this morning Matt levelled a base Then we started moving panels, and realised it is quite big!! And ended up with a shed!!! Left a trail of breadcrumbs to lure the fugitive in And the obligatory number plate Then started filling it with stuff!

Today we rolled the fugitive outside (ok, we didn't, I dragged it out on a couple of old wheels... but it sounded better ) Tom mounted the seats on the runners, so we could work out headroom Whilst I got busy with the grinder and cutting discs and flapdiscs Think if we fit the lowback seats about an inch under the rails we'll have plenty of room Tom even more so Got all the horrible lumps of weld and pig iron removed to the back of the seats And Tom primed the bare metal back up We looked at height of flyscreen, and had a think about a dashboard... we think with the removable steering wheel should be able to get legs in and out OK. Made a cardboard dash and gaffertaped it in, then got in and out a few times in both sides Plan would be to fit a tube at the bottom so there aren't any sharp edges (will use IVA rules) and a bit of sheet for the dash We even took a packed lunch with us (it's only a mile up the road!) which of course was eaten in the car

You are using a stock beam right? Do you already have one, I don't remember? I still have those torsion bars and plates waiting will box them up.
If you do use a stock beam...if I didn't already tell you... Top tip (especially if offroading)... Get an anti roll bar, cut the curved ends off, wind a track rod end out of your long track rod, wind the other end in as far as it will go, measure some stuff and cut the anti roll bar to length and drop it into the rod (blob of weld in there to stop it rattling around) and put your track rod end back in and hey presto! Sprung steel track rods. You can jump on them all day (well maybe Tom can...) and they will never bend. You will never have the pain of trying to straighten a bent track rod in a field after a rough landing. The leftover of the ARB can go in your short rod too if you are so inclined!
(No, you don't want an anti roll bar on the fug unless you like not being able to corner at anything approaching a stiff jogging speed).

Yeah, it's a stock beam we've built up, didn't fit the ARB as wasn't sure we'd need one. We've built up the rods, but we could build these as a side project, as I've got a spare set of rods too, so could build them up and fit them after (I'm a little heavier than Tom, my *ahem* 11 stones can bend lots of things )

Honestly an upgrade well worth doing and takes less than an hour. Electrical tape stops it rattling too. Bent rods are neither fun nor cheap to replace!

good tip fad, might have to do that on the buggy, not that it will ever get serious offroad abuse. johnthesparky - single circuit brake MC, a new dust cover wouldn't hurt, but all was working fine when it was driven into the garage (at least as well as 1959 drums ever work ) I'll be at VW Action this weekend, look for a dutch plated mondeo estate in VZi camping, otherwise PM me your address / telephone number and I'll try and get it to you some how.

Didn't get much done. I popped over to VW Action and collected a master cylinder from SamJ Thanks!!! Hope you had a good weekend! Had a wander around the autojumble and picked up a couple more steels with tyres on, so we have something to push it around on when we are building. Also got a steering lock assembly cheap so will see if we can integrate that Popped up and dropped the bits at the shed, and remembered a crash helmet so checked clearance to the cage That should be OK! Then we had my folks 50th wedding anniversary So today, after popping to my folks for breakfast (with a few sore heads ) We cleaned the block paving (There is a bit that needs re-levelling, where I park the van all the time, but it looks a lot better) Going to sell the trailer too, as we haven't used it in a few years... so that's on eBay and the funds can go in the Fug kitty (had a weigh in this week too)

So we have stalled a bit, I've been going up the farm when I have had a minute/been passing and carried on chopping the surplus junk from the frame. The problem is the shed is a way away from any power, so unless we are up there a while it takes to long moving stuff to get to the power... I've got a majors grinder, but swapped most of my kit to milwaukee a couple of years back, so only have 2 3Ah batteries. So I got this.... Which means I can use these (and charging is a lot easier too) Which means I can grind for 3 times as long (4 if I also use the makita) so I finished off the back, Today we have been up and mocked up a dashboard, I got a mk1 golf ignition switch and steering lock, so we fitted that and then made a dash (from the cover off of a fluorescent fitting I changed last week) And found out that the steering wheel needs offsetting if you don't want to bang your knuckles all the time Think it needs to move over a bit more I think So played with that, and then Tom had a play But we need to start welding, there are a load of rivet and screw holes to fill just to start with and we are waiting for fabrication time, so we are going to buy a welder.... sold my little trailer today, so I have the green light to get a cheap welder. Then we can drag the frame either into one of the barns or home and get sorting! Any advise on what to get? Cheapish for welding tube mostly!

My welding can't be any worse than this!! And if it does, I'll get through a lot more grinding discs than the previous owner

Not made much progress due to Scout camp with the kids and a bit of walking. But we have made a useful modification, I got a wheel out of a skip and we've made the biggest most useless wheel barrow in the world Not the best job in the world, but a bit of scaffold pole and some angle iron, and now I can roll it outside or into the trailer..... Proper update soon, but it's not stopped completely!

On Friday the fugitive went to Mark, the fabricator He filled lots of holes where rivets and dodgey brackets had been fitted Which seemed to take an age, there were a lot of holes! He welded a tube in for the dash and cut the nasty removable engine cradle tubes out and replaced with a single tube And then made some boxes for the seat pans. We wanted to drop them slightly, so we could run sliding seat rails without losing any height, but we actually did them deeper (and we can put spacers in to lift the seats up) so hopefully we can, change the seats without having to start again Fuel tank also arrived, and is almost exactly the right size Then I had to load up, and take the fugitive home. It was getting late by the time I got there to load up, the pub opposite was getting busy... and I was wandering round with a car shaped wheelbarrow

Then we sorted ourselves out for a roadtrip.... fad of this Parish had offered us some bits a while back, coupled with the fact I went to uni in Newcastle and hadn't been back for a long time we sorted a road trip. We drove up Friday night, staying at the Angels View Hotel, got there really late, then got up really early It was finished after I'd left uni, so over the years I've passed it a few times but never taken the time to have a proper look Then we went into town and got breakfast and had a mooch We had a look at the Castle At the animatronic dinosaurs in the par And the great North Museum Then went to find fad where we drank tea and inspected Bad Juju and the rest of the projects, before leaving for home in the rain, and hopefully not disturbing Dave and Paul too much!

Looking good, you probably already have it in hand but do put some drains in those seat trays for when you get caught out in the rain or snow or use it in mud and need to hose it afterwards.
Just a thought on the fuel tank. Mine is behind the seats, I thought it would be safer there and doesnt have fuel pipes running along the car. Very fine looking tank though, quite impressive.

Funny you should say that, we’ve just been up to do some bits, and clearance is really tight... so came to the same conclusion It won’t go further forward than this, if I move the frame tubes then it’d be really close to the wheels on lock! And then it’s really close to the steering column, and if it goes forward it’ll hit the collapsible section But behind the seats, it’s perfect Probably a bit further back though
