Against the likes of Steve Green I guess? Blimey, Malta is a long way to go to get a car built, no one local? Is he getting his Anglia/Pop rebuilt or a new ride? He currently runs a Mk1 Escort with a BIG turbo'd C20LET in it - runs low 8's (Or at least it did before it went out to Malta) Justin Ladmu is rebuilding it in time for Malta's 1st drag event of 2019, then it'll get shipped back as far as I know. It was supposed to be a 1yr max but as usual plans change and its been nearer 3! It is great that Kev is still Drag Racing - I spoke to him at the Pod about three years ago and he still wants to go faster! Those Maltese Fords are killers and I'm sure will get Kev into the 7's.......Which is unreal. But a lighter, more aerodynamic, Elan should be faster still??

Saw some Matlese cars at Doorslammers. Bloody quick but virtually mini top fuel cars with engine rebuilds after each run! Not sure about that. I am very grip limited with not the best axle for drag racing (independent double wishbone). On race fuel we have around 600bhp (around the limit for my chassis/suspension) and car should, hopefully, weigh around 650-700kg. I would love to get into the 8s but 9s will be pretty quick for a road legal car.

Seriously, keep up the good work. Inspiring stuff :-) Door carcass weighs around 6kg. Replaced skin with carbon and drilled 400 holes and got it down to 3kg :-) The thought of doing this again to the driver's door got me thinking about making a complete carbon door. So far I have made a mould for the external skin. Next task is to repeat this for the rest of the door.

That is a metric curse word load of holes!!!! When drilling them it didn't seem to be that many, I was just concentrating on removing as much fibreglass as I could (there is still room for more holes :-) ). However, the thought of doing it again doesn't actually fill me with enthusiasm so I will attempt to make a carbon door instead. One advantage of doing this is that the original door isn't made unsalable :-)

Amazing build. Is there a target figure you know of that needs beating to make this the worlds quickest Elan?

Amazing build. Is there a target figure you know of that needs beating to make this the worlds quickest Elan? Thanks. Actually, no :-) However, the plan is to set a benchmark and then see if anyone challenges it. Sort of 'I have built and own the fastest UK road legal Lotus Elan in the world. It does the 1/4 mile in x.y secs @ zzz mph" and then see what comes out of the woodwork. As there were only around 13,000 (can't remember the exact figure) built and most of the surviving cars are kept as standard, there isn't much competition :-) There are a few running highly turned twincam engines (mine was around 200bhp back in the early 80s) but nothing I know off approaching the power at my disposal. It would be great if there is someone out there as daft as me :-)

I think you just laid down a challenge to find some base figures, I had a quick look on youtube but nothing. What was your best with the old set up? No matter what happens speed wise the car is very special and I am looking forward to seeing it up and running

Sort of a 'I have built the world's quickest Lotus Elan...prove me wrong' sort of thing. I like it

Great project. Back in the early 2000s I had a friend who built race engines for a living, (name was Martin Cheetham, specialised in Aston Martins, if you google him you will find a vid of him setting hillclimb records in 1988). He had an ongoing Elan project that was running a heavily tuned Vauxhall twin cam engine. It was a beast, I don't know any figures, but he regularly attended track days and showed me a video of it at one where it was overtaking cossies etc. Sadly I don't have any pics as it was the days before camera phones. I've lost touch with him now and he must be in his 80s by now so not sure if the car still makes any appearances on the track or if he still owns it. Wish I could get more info, or find a pic as whenever I see your thread title I think of that car and how I would love to see a race between his car and yours once complete! I would know the car if I ever saw it again as it had a very distinctive hand crafted bonnet that I struggle to describe, but I think was designed to aid downforce, scooping the air under and over.

No matter what happens speed wise the car is very special and I am looking forward to seeing it up and running Yeah, when I started this project I scoured the internet looking for someone who had done the same. There was a rumour that there was another Elan with a (I believe) NA YB Cosworth engine, but I couldn't find it. The old set up was a 1650cc Lotus Twin Cam tuned to the (at the time) eyeballs. 168whp so around 200bhp at flywheel. Ran high 12s at around 120mph. Someone who knew how to drive could probably have got it into the low 12s :-) Thanks, I am looking forward to this as well, but with some trepidation!

Thanks Over the years I have searched for and not found any seriously modified road going Elans, apart from mine :-) I searched for Martin but everything relates to Aston Martins, not an Elan in sight. Oh well. Once it is out and setting some times and I make the fastest Elan claim we will see if anything comes out of the woodwork :-)

Yes I did a bit of googling too hoping somebody might have snapped it at a track day or something, but no joy. But I do know it exists! Or at least it did 15 years ago...

Lotus Elans rarely get scrapped (unless they catch fire, and even then all you need is the identification plate :-) ) so it is probably around in one guise or another.

Front and central aero panels in position. Next task is to fit the fasteners. After that I need to add some additional sections to cover the holes between the front tyres and existing floor, just visible behind the tyres.

Started on fitting front aero section support brackets. Made the long straps out aluminium to start with in order to sort out length and angles. Then used these as moulds for the aramid/carbon mix which are less than half the weight of the aluminium ones. looking closely you will notice that I have used the P clips I made some time ago as the main support brackets.
