The hole saw came out last night for oil passage ways in the existing well what's left of the original sump, sidewalls made up and the bottom of it shaped ready for the welding process. A few photos. Now need to figure out where best to place the drain plug when I drop it of for welding. Next step form there is modifying the exhaust once I get the spare pipework I ordered delivered. Cheers Col.

Looks good! Really must learn to TIG aluminium. So many uses...

Learning to TIG weld would be a good skill to have for sure, at the moment though I leave it to my mate who does a cracking job. In the mean time I've removed the exhaust and cut it up into smaller pieces so I can rearrange the pipework for the added ground clearance I am after. Some stainless bends have been purchased along with stainless mig wire so I can glue it all back together. Cheers Col.

I've stainless migged my exhaust together. If you normally use 0.6mm mild wire then most stainless stuff is 0.8mm so lower the wire speed a little. It also splatters a bit more than mild when starting (unless I've just not got the settings right).
I didn't back-purge and it seemed to go OK, although I haven't run it really. My mate used a flux-type stuff on the back edge of joints which seemed to work rather well. Might be worth investigating that 👍

So after more than a week of waiting for other exhaust pipe in the correct diameter and bore I managed to attach some of it back to the Pest so it is starting to resemble an exhaust. First I have to cut up the 180 degree bends so I have 4 90 degree sections. Then start welding bits onto the original well not Imp exhaust but the one I made originally Once the collector was in place it was time to cut and shut number one downpipe and tack in place. The exhaust now is level with the lower frame rails that are bolted into the gearbox mounts on the rear crossmember giving so much more ground clearance than it had before. Might get number two tacked in this evening Cheers Col.

Well last night I not only got number two downpipe tacked up and in position but also number three.. Fair chuffed with that result. Number one and two tacked in place Number three in. And with the rear transom fitted to see what it will look like when finished. Hoping to finish it all off tomorrow afternoon. Cheers Col.

I had my shortened sump dropped of yesterday so I will be painting that later this evening for fitting this weekend then will see if the effort was worth it for a bit of more ground clearance. Cheers Col.

Could you put a long enough straight edge cross the underside of your sump and measure up to the bottom of the chassis rails (the rail base, not its folded down lip) - I'm curious to see how low your setup is compared to mine?
I have managed to get the goldwing sump sit at the same height as my current Datsun engine and that's never hit anything- it my sideways rear silencer that will rub on leaving driveways with a really deep gutter etc. I think 140mm down.
Oh also- your driveshafts... you look to have done a similar setup to what I'm hoping to do. You have cv joints on the inside and the Imp universals on the outside. I have looked back to see how you connected them but couldnt find any pics of the connection? Did you do a typical shaft joint - machine/grind down shaft ends to a point and build up welds from a root weld? Then sleeve them?
I'm going to get advice and help from a local hotrod builder friend on this because its one thing I don't want to have to do twice.

Alex, I only have this one photo of the revised driveshafts. I used the hub section of the Imp UJ where I cut of the UJ part at the bearing/seal area, This was machined in the centre to match the MX5 driveshaft diameter for a really neat fit so I could then adjust the length to the suitable length for the movement of the shaft required. Once I got the required length I then cut is to suit , pinned them both then welded the outer and inner parts of the UJ area to the shaft. Hope this helps. I will get a proper measurement for you from the chassis rails to the sump bottom over the weekend. Your doing great work on the 6 cylinder Imp. You could do with a sticker like I have made up for my Imp, much more appropriate for yours than mine though I reckon. Cheers Col.

Thanks so much for that info collin. I'll have a go at trying that out too. I wonder how strong it'll be when welded just around the perimeter of the axle/stub join? Did you get it tig welded by someone? I love that sticker!!! I'm looking forward to making up an 'imp 911' type of badge for the back. That will be a neat little thing to do that I have to earn by finishing the bloody project!

No problem Alex, I pinned it and mig welded the shaft at each end of the uj part. I now have the car motd so have been doing a few miles yesterday to see what issues it has. So far the tracking needs done and I have are issue with gear selection, sometimes it's fine other times it struggles to engage. Think it is the routing I have and position of the pivots. Possibly the clutch but I didn't expect anything else really. A photo of it outside the not station . Cheers Col.

The issues with the clutch I am putting down to iffy slave cylinder seals which I didn't change when I had the chance when it was all out of the car. I now have new seal kit for this and hoping to get it sorted out this evening along with refitting the reverse gear which was causing a bit of vibration at certain speeds. That has now been balanced and lightened somewhat since it was first fitted. Picked it up this morning and chuffed with the way it looks now and positive it will improve matters. Cheers Col.

Oooh, its been a whilst since I posted anything about the Pest up here. Busy trying to enjoy it between bleeding the clutch I don't know how many times now and reconfiguring the exhaust routing to one quieten it down a bit and stop the fumes recirculating into the car itself and choking me. That sounds more dramatic than it was actually but the fumes were giving me a sore head so it needed sorting. I was a bit sad to see the exhaust having to be relocated but needs must . Went from poking out of the rear panel to kicking out the side more into the airstream so the fumes don't come back on themself. Much better now but still a bit on the loud side at certain speeds and a I have a small vibration at around 55mph which needs more investigation but I can drive through it no problem for the moment. Other than that all good and enjoying getting out and about in it. Cheers Col.

Been ages since I last posted about the Imp. Re-mot'd this month ready for another year of razzing around in it and visiting various shows.
A couple of videos of the car and at the recent Imp Ecosse event that was held by the Imp club in Montrose last weekend Enjoy.
Montrose .
Will try and have something from the 60th anniversary event at Linwood on Tuesday.
Cheers Col
