Been a long time since I've posted with any progress on my Imp. With covid being the main thing happening this year I have been run off my feet at work since March, 7 days a week working didn't allow much time on it unfortunately. I have been doing little bits as I go but possibly never enough to make it interesting for you good folks on here. One thing I have been doing is rebuilding the motor and sorting that out so I can try and fire it up. Well I managed that about an hour ago now. Chuffed is an understatement with hearing it run, not for long but it runs which has been my main worry.
Cheers Col

With getting the motor started I started to look at the standard Blackbird wiring loom and what I need to to to make it tidier. Also where the relays, fuse box and cdi unit were going to be fitted with the least amount of hassle. I didn't ant to have to cut the wiring too much so fitted it as if it was still in the bike keeping wiring trimming to a minimum. An alloy sheet was shaped to hold a few relays and the cdi unit, the battery box mounted all behind the motor but within the frame. Battery box/tray. Once that was fitted and I was happy with it I moved onto the tray. Happy there I now needed to think about how I was going to change gear. A chat with Kevin at Cable-tec had a 800mm push pull cable in the post soon enough so I could make up brackets to weld to the frame. So that was the engine cable stop sorted but it needed to be held at the other end too, more bracketry required. Last night I finished of both ends and mocked up how it would work when I attached it to the Imp shift mechanism. Cheers Col.

Love the work, just brilliant modifications.
Gives my age away, but have seen Works Hillman Imps (Roots) on the Various rallies in Wales driven very fast by Colin Malkin.

Thank Pete. Had a wee clean up of my diff and splashed some etch primer, primer and a shiny coat of black PJ1. Bit of a boring photo but a little progress all the same. Cheers Col.

Now that I know the gears will shift I need the clutch to operate correctly as well. The original Imp clutch master cylinder is a larger bore than the Blackbird one so I am using a Kawasaki rear brake master cylinder to shift the fluid to the Honda clutch. This required another bracket made up to suit the master cylinder. Here is what I did yesterday for an hour or so. Needs some paint on it and a little adjustment so the pedal is at the same height as the brake pedal but seems to work OK at the moment. Cheers Col.

So I trial fitted the pedal box today and unfortunately it will need some modification so it can be fitted with the return radiator hose to be underneath the master cylinder. the bracket I made to hold the master cylinder is squishing the hose just a bit too much for my liking. Its back on the bench awaiting the grinder to sort it out now. In the mean time I fitted some 4 way stretch carpet onto the firewall and refitted the dash and heater and sorting out the hoses for that to today. Some photos.... Cheers Col.

Little bits done over the holidays with brake lines finished and clutch lines fitted internally to save clutter under the car. Also painted the inside edge of my polycarbonate windows so I don't see the black seal I have between them and the door. Refitted the engine cradle so I can sort out the gearshift and think about extending the wiring loom... 36 wires it has!!!!! Fitted some braided line to the oil cooler as I had to relocate it to a sensible place. Extending the wiring will be part of this weekends job along with bleeding the brakes... at last!! Cheers Col.

That looks like an interesting set-up with all the lines inside! Should keep it all nice and clean, though it might be hard work keeping it all polished! What particularly caught my eye is the brake master, though. Looks to be plumbed backwards to all the others I've seen! (Though I'm not familiar with Imp stuff...)

Yeah that cylinder does look to be plumbed backwards doesn't it? Darkspeed will know!

I expect Col has been around Imps and the like long enough to know how to connect up a Girling cylinder. I use the fact that Girling type remotes are the same construction as the Integrals with the res on the end. That and the larger 1/4 connection for the res.

No need to worry guys regarding the brake master cylinder and its plumbing. Darkspeed is correct it is the other way round from normal and the input fitting is a different size to the out going towards the brake lines. Must be correct as I bled the system today with help from my son and apart from tightening a few fittings it looks the same. With having the bike engine I need to extend the wiring loom forwards so I've been working on that yesterday and part of today. 36 wires to cut, fit connectors to and do the same to the extra wiring at both ends...... I didnt get it finished today is all I'm saying Think it may take a wee while to complete the loom. Cheers Col

Good to hear of the success; brakes are always a good thing to have. (...though it seems to be a rule that there's always at least one fitting that wasn't tightened quite enough.)

That is a strange old thing. Is it the same on all Girling masters of that sort? I've got a couple for my Spitfire and want to make sure I plumb them up the right way around!

Tamber, Glad it isn't just me that gets a wee leak when fitting new brake lines.
Biturbo228, I can't comment if all Girling's are like that for old British cars or not, probably best checking what you have although if they are like the Imps you cant get it wrong as the brake lines and reservoir pipes are two different diameters so the fittings are different too.
Cheers Col.

Glad it isn't just me that gets a wee leak when fitting new brake lines. I always figure, if it's only a small leak then I've done quite well! As opposed to "where's that puddle come from? ...oh, I didn't connect that at all." I'm quite a fan of air-brakes, now, myself. Much less clean-up after a leak.

Well back to the Imp today and no leaks so happy as with that More wiring or I should call it loom extension. Got it all going forward now and know the length I need to get to the dash. Routed it the way I want and will make sure it all works before heat shrink is added. Poking into the interior before I route it over the inner wing and out below the rear side pocket. I insulated the tunnel as I have finished fitting all the brake and clutch lines. Then I fitted some 4 way stretch carpet to the parcel shelf and the area where the rear seat used to live. More of the same tomorrow I think. Cheers Col.

Some more carpet thrown in today after I fitted the refurbed gearstick/choke assembly. Continued with the wiring loom extending by fitting the connections to the dash end, tightened up the roll cage bolts a d a few other bits not worth photographing. Still, a lttle bit of progress all the same. Cheers Col.
