So I've bought a Polo that I'm sorting the bodywork out on.
I'm going to paint it with Montana black paint and I've started filling some of the dents and sorted some rust. On the filled area's I'm going to prime.
As part of the bodywork repair I'm replacing a couple of panels. The bootlid and a wing. Do I need to prime all of the car, the panels that are a different colour or just the filled area's?
Will I get away with just keying the paint work (240 grit wet and dry??) and spraying the Montana straight onto that?

Depending on the colours and how different they are you will use more paint to bring a uniform overall colour.
And red is a swine to cover as it bleeds through so use a grey primer to cover non lacquered red....

240 is too rough 600-800 wet or a red scotch pad will do it
don't have to prime good paint ...just the bare metal and filler

You won't need to prime the sound panels. If you use Montana you won't get any colour bleed, it's MEGA heavy pigment paint.

400 Grit will be fine, Red Scotchbrite is 400 grit equivalent after all

I have a lot of Wet and Dry. 16 sheets for a quid at poundland.
I'll have an appropriate grit.

I would prime it personally. My Montana paint has peeled in places, has been on for 3 or 4 years mind.

I would prime it personally. My Montana paint has peeled in places, has been on for 3 or 4 years mind. I'm not sure if primer would cure that or not. MGB has been painted for about 3 years with no issue but it was primed, except the bonnet which was black-over-black and both are as good as each other. If the panel is keyed well for adhesion, tacked down and panel wiped there should be no issue. Montana is basically vintage style car paint anyway. The landrover is painted over the OE paint but it was DA'd well with 240 but its not been long enough to comment on 'staying power'.

I didnt primer mine. Needed very little prep. It goes on super easy and looks good.

iv used graffitti spray on my car, used Kobra stuff from graff-city at £3 a can of 400ml... could do a whole car with 3 cans but better off with 5 or 6 . mines a mk5 fiesta zs so would be about the same amount with a polo.
i used primer too and 2000 wet n dry all over the car

Yea, 2000 grit isn't key, it's polish.. Around 500-800 if you want a good finish. But 240 is enough as graffiti paint is THICK.

I have pretty much every grade between 80 and 1800, it shouldn't be a problem.

Is it still worth tack clothing it if I'm painting it outside on the drive?

Not polishing paint.

fair point lol. i think i started writing it, edited it and deleted it all because it made no sense ... posted thinking i hadnt
but yeah 400 should be fine... my car came out fairly well, i didnt go too mad as its only a 2002 fiesta, but tried to get it looking as clean as poss after a nice 'swear word' keyed it.
