Looking at building a mega cheap fast road and occasional track car.
Looking at cheap uprated suspension on ebay, there is fixed rate and height suspension kits available for under the £190 mark in varying heights (40, 60 and 70mmm) or fixed rate coilovers for about £240.
Does anyone have opinions on what would be better. I've used cheap ebay coilovers a bunch of times but always for just getting VAG stuff as low as I could and never for something I'm gunna rag about at a semi sensible height.
£50 saving could go into strut braces or a cheap 2nd hand bucket seat.....
Decisions decisions.

I've got ta technix on my mk1 mx5 which I've used on track a bunch of times. I think it really depends what you want to get out of the track time. If you are chasing times and looking for ultimate performance then the cheap ones aren't going to do the job, but if you're just going for a good time and aren't too concerned about ultimate performance then they are okay. I've been in and driven similar spec'd cars with more expensive suspension (Gaz, Koni and MeisterR) and the difference is noticeable (even as a passenger). The ride is better and the car more composed towards the limit of grip (corners as well as acceleration and braking). But do they provide more fun? I'd say probably not.

Low powered fwd hatchback so definitely not chasing times. Just after something cheap and fun. More emphasis on that than outright speed.

How about, rag it as standard, then chop the springs, next gut the interior finally if you feel it is worth the expense then start the spending. Years ago a magazine did a feature on cheapy track slags, one of which was a metro GTA which gained glory for passing a hot Scooby in the wet. Afaicr the only work done was service items, and possibly upgraded bushes Ttfn Glenn

That's a fair point, depends on the condition of the stock suspension though as often it's cheaper to fit cheap coilovers than replace standard stuff.

I have a few sets of cheap ebay coilovers from golfs in my garage, in the scrap pile, non lasted more than 8 months with constant road use, given the low life expectancy i'd rather go for lowerd springs on standard struts. Unless you want to go uber low or really really need to get the corner wieghts spot on i'd never fit coilovers personly, especialy cheap ebay tat, i'll dig one out and see what make they are so you can avoid them

I've had most of the low end curse word, ta technix, rokko, the cheap FK ones and they were all ok. The Rokko's were particularly harsh but none of them died even after over a year of daily use!

Cheers for digging them out. Look like generic eBay stuff.

They look like JOM Blueline coilovers to me. I've just changed the set I had on my Bora. They lasted four years for me.
Just fitted TA technix. I think the JOMs had a better ride and gave better feedback on the handling. But as mentioned before, for just a bit of fun on track - either set would be fine. You'll be able to set the car how you like in terms of height and weight. The only thing you have to settle on is the dampening and rebound rates. You can always buy different weight springs if you want to experiment.
I've had super expensive coilovers in the past and honestly never got the best out of them as there was so much to set up. In the end I got a firm to corner weight it for me, set the rebounds for "fast road" use and went on my merry way. In my eyes, unless you're building a Time Attack car or dedicated motorsport weapon, the cheap ones are just fine.
