The existing exhaust is shot, as in, multiple large holes, almost full disintegration of some parts. Zero chance of using even a single component of it, and not a chance it would be even near gas tight! Engine code is 049.103.373, so a 1.6 YN code. Still having naff all luck with the garage, they've not contacted me once letting me know what's going on, I always have to ring them. Not had much luck on ETKA, none of the diagrams look quite right.

Lame, what diameter is the pipe? I have the exhaust off my Subaru sitting in the garage not doing anything, happy to lend you it to make it pass an MOT if it fits.

Is there enough there to take it as a pattern to a speciaiist and have one made up in stainless? It may not be as expensive as you might think. I can't see the flange to the manifold so maybe some of the front pipe is awol?

That's an absolutely lovely old Passat, it looks in fantastic fettle!
The exhaust needn't be a massive headache, really - There's bound to be a Powerflow/Longlife agent near you that could whip one up from stainless, they wouldn't need a pattern, but they would need the car. I think Cybox are over your way and I've heard really good things about them, but they'd probably cost more than a longlife one.

i agree go stainless, i've never regretted mine, purchased about 15 years ago with lifetime guarantee, the rear box failed after about 10 years (including afew sat in a field lol), true to word was replaced for the cost of postage of returning the backbox..

Have you tried www.pdgough.com or www.piperexhausts.co.uk ? Both do amazing quality stainless by mail-order and have years of patterns on file, Ive bought my Rover p6 a PD Gough stainless system section by section as it wore out and Piper did a brilliant one for my Tomcat, both over the phone or email and perfect fits when they were delivered.

Hi again all, Yeah sorry forgot to mention, this is the back section of the exhaust. The exhaust manifold (which is solid) folds under the car and attaches to a pipe and midbox, which then attaches to this. I couldn't get the midbox and pipe off (didn't want to damage the manifold) so left it on and the garage took it off. I'm not sure if they've chucked it already. I've found these which seem to be right; www.auspuffanlage.de/Europa-VW-Passat-Auspuffrohr-Auspuff-Rohr-Endrohr-1255049.htmlwww.auspuffanlage.de/MSD-Audi-80-Vw-Passat-1-3-1-5-1-6-Auspuff-Mitteltopf-Mittelschalldaempfer-1111001.htmlBut I'm no expert. I'd also be totally happy getting a stainless steel exhaust, but have no idea what this might cost. Anything above 500 at the moment is probably unreasonable for me. Plus I'd need to factor in getting the car to a fabrication unit which would be a trailer job I guess? Although the car is now 100% drivable. George - the tailpipe measures 1 5/8th inch (41.2750mm) and this looks to be a constant throughout the backsection. There's nothing left to measure on the silencer though! What is left of your exhaust from your scooby? Would it be possible to literally bolt one onto the exit pipe from the manifold with a single silencer/resonator, and call that job done for MOT? Does the tailpipe need to extend beyond the back of the car, or can it end mid-section? I'd obviously be happy to pay for anything use though, I know things don't come free Also as a side note; I'm away from Wednesday afternoon for 2 weeks without any access to internet / phone etc. It would be amazing to have the car either sorted, or in a fabrication unit being worked on in this time!

I know a couple of guys that have longlife stainless exhausts on b3 passats, they paid around the Ā£300 mark about 5 years ago for a custom system at standard diameter, so not too extravagant.

Measures 1 3/4 inch with a normal 2 bolt flange type attachment, might be able to use the backbox attached straight to the manifold, feel free to call around and have a look at it, happy to lend it to you for free. Tailpipe doesn't need to exit at the back of the car from memory, although i'd have to double check the MOT manual to be certain.

Cheers George, I'd pop round tonight but I'm fully tied up, probably won't have time until I go away now Rang the garage again, they've still not been able to source anything. They had a big boss from CES in on Friday trying to gain some business, he's on the case too now. They also said it was likely I'd need a custom build as they can't find anything anywhere. They said they knew a place, and I said I was thinking about a full stainless steel job as long as it was sub Ā£500. I didn't realise exhausts could be so difficult to sort out, thought it was literally just a basic bolt on job. Really not sure what to do now as I've run out of time before I go away. They'll have had the car for over a month by the time I get back, and I expect I'll be no further ahead by then either!

The downside of owning a rare car I guess!

The shots of the Passat sat in the garage are fantastic. What a stunner. As for exhaust, definitely get a stainless one made up. Surely there is a place restively near you, which the car could be trailered to? As for the garage taking ages to do anything, I'd continue to keep on at them. If there's one thing life's taught me about customer service and cars, the only way to get anywhere with some people is to keep on pushing them. Personally, I'd be twitchy about leaving it with any garage for more than a few days as well, but that's just me. Keep up the fantastic work.

I agree with Jackeria....here in the states, there are muffler specific shops that can make anything from stock pipes and do it on a regular basis. I'm sure a competent mechanic with a tubing bender would be able to hook you up without undo expense.....
You have gotten the car looking great and are making such good progress....keep at it!

I've used that supplier before (they're the ones in my post above) excellent service and those IMASAF parts are very good quality, makes Bosal etc. looks like cheap nasty rubbish.

Ah cheers guys! And thanks Paul for texting me and letting me know! Was some good new to hear after my stint in the wilderness with work. Only 1 advisory too, nearside front wheel bearing has slight play, so nothing too major! Can't wait to pick her up on Monday morning now!
