perhaps this will inspire a design for some paintwork or graphics for the back end...I really like the potential of those tail lights....they are very 60's perhaps Jag or MG...but I have seen them bookend a prancing horse too.... You have an almost Bimmer 2002 or early 70s VW look going here with those cool headlights...but didnt Alfa have a similar thing going with one of their lines during that era? Morphing styles is not easy to do, but I think you have come up with some very cool features that are definitely your own yet still keep the flavor of the time when these cars were made. cool JP

Full on Street Machine style is required here I say. Pink and white 90s sidestripe livery, and get it on air for sure!

May as well get this out there now: There will be no pink and white stripes.
Discussion on the rear lights is welcomed (thanks for the picture 07lilredwagon), discussion on pink stripes is finished! ;-)

64-66 mustang rear lights would work in there. Not round mind you. I reckon that rear panel should be completely recessed with a largish round light unit at each end to mirror the headlights.

Any suggestions for stripes need to involve a photoshop image. I just can't see past clean and smooth.
Ade; your pictures just aren't convincing me that it's the way to go. There's a reason cars don't look like that any more. :-) I love retro but to me that just looks dated. Aren't stripes and stuff like that really just to take your eye away from shonky bodywork?

Are the headlight mounting plates from a golf? It seems a good simple way of mounting them.

The mounting plates are mk2 Golf and they come with the lights if you buy the complete units. They even use the same bulbs as the Lada which was a bonus.
When Retro Warwick suggested that look the first thing I thought was mk1 Cortina but they really wouldn't blend with the look of the front of the car. I'd need an older style metal grill at the front and then the door handles wouldn't really work either. Even the bumpers wouldn't really tie in as they're too 80's with the rubber end caps.
I had a couple of mk2 Escort bumpers that I was hoping to cut up and fit along with small mk1 escort rear lights but they just didn't suit the car. The bumpers looked far too delicate and the lights were too small. The shape of the Lada really needs chunky bumpers so then I though about the early spec mk1 Golf bumpers but it was way too much money to end up with something that looked pretty much the same as the Lada ones.

umm, see what you mean, would spraying the bezels black be more in keeping in colour, style & size to the headlamps and front grill?

I think they're a bit too intricate and well made looking. More 60s than 80s. I do like them but not convinced for this car. To do that amount of work again it'd have to be for something I was certain about. I'm also one of the few who actually like the Fiat Coupe lights on the car so will need to run them for a year before considering major surgery.
If I was to change them then the most likely candidates at the moment would be early spec Toyota MR2 rear lights probably with the lenses sanded smooth and a light smoke tint. It'd give a look somewhere between original Riva and the late spec mk1 Golf lights.

I think if you choose the right color combination and work out the design you can create the look you are going for. there are several subtle elements you can work with...For instance: I can see a body color space around the lights to help set them in the panel. Add a satin black or dark grey color from paint or vinyl (or a combo like I illustrated) going across the whole panel and it would look really nice. I had an image of any GT car that used a mat or satin black finished rear panel....which also was accompanied by a satin black hood (not suggesting that necessarily) with satin black sills....a discrete rally stripe along the bottom of the doors, ect could look really cool.... (though, this is all a bit common....) JP

I think the look I'm after is actually already there it's just that with so many people disliking it I'm now doubting myself!
I'm not keen on the idea of different colours/ shades on the rear panel and there have been far too many hours spent blending in the sills to the wings and quarters to cover them in black. The whole idea is to simplify where possible. The rear panel will either be body colour or metallic black. I think it'll be easier just to paint it black, get it out my system, then if I don't like it just paint it green again.

I love it as it is, just clean with some subtle mods no silly stripes. But i do think the rear lights look a bit out of place, you should definitely fit them in there original housings so they were sunk in. Stunning work keep it up

The original housings don't fit as they run at different angles on the Coupe. Recessing unto the Lada panel looked a bit wrong (I did mock this up originally but forgot to take pictures) as the panel itself is already recessed. These actually stick out less than the original lights. I've found a shade of black that seems to have a green tint to it so away to get the masking tape out! :-)

This is a fantastic build... FACT!! But those tail lights fella, I'm sorry but I'm in the don't like 'em camp! In my opinion the problem is two fold, firstly they're too small. Secondly, the Lada is very square, and because you're tail lights are round it just doesn't work. What I would use if I had anywhere near as much talent as you clearly do is a set of taillights from a VW T3, like this:- And maybe slightly recess them into the rear panel. Apart from that it's one damn cool Lada, that front end looks superb kinda puts me in mind of an old Alfa, just brilliant. Keep up the good work!
