Been a while since I did anything much with the cars, distinct lack of mojo and a stomach upset, feeling better now so today I tidied up the garage and took the Lotus for a spin, firstly though I fitted the new bow I had made for the hood. Before it sagged over the door and flapped. Afterwards it improved the shape and tightened it all up. Result of drive is generally good, fuel system works well, cooling system is vastly improved just sits around 87 all the time, throttle with the new springs works well. Bad points, some new rattles from the rear (think its just the rear seat belt fixings which are loose because I haven't fitted them yet), need to better seal around the gearstick, the "new" starter solenoid doesen't always work first time so new one ordered (might even chuck the old one in the bin this time!)and there is still a small oil leak from the front cover but a fraction of the river that was leaking, overall I call that a sucsess. On the range rover, got it up on the 4 poster for a pre mot check, so far all looks ok, just the exhaust to sort out. Centre muffler begining to go Small leak from downpipe, bit of bathroom silicone should see to that. Back 2 feet missing. Fortunatelly I have a stainless rear and new centre, will take a bit of fiddling with hangers though because it is the earlier twin pipe system. The slight weep from the gearbox to transfer case also seems to have stopped, but the trans sump is going rusty, I don't really want to disturb it so need something to treat it with in situ any ideas? Good to see you getting out a bit Kevin. It is all progress. Today may see the MX5 relieved of its heart inbetween doing the day job. That would be cool too.

Spent lunchtime under thecrange rover, pulled old exhaust off, fed the new one through and the first problem became apparant. Clearly the earlier ones had a longer Y pipe. Fortunately I had a length of pipe which was a good fit inside the downpipe, so after a few minutes I had knocked this up. Then cut the flare and a couple of slots in the downpipe and clamped it in. Need to get some proper bolts tomorrow and that will be wrapped up. Middle hanger off the single pipe system lined up and fitted with a new smaller clamp. That just leaves the rear. Originaly it has a rear hanger about 6" in front of the rear muffler which is a stupid place , the exhaust came with a webbing hanger that looks like it had been held to the rear crossmember with a couple of pop rivets, I'm certainly not doing that again, tomorrow I will see if I can feed a plate with a couple of studs in through the end of the crossmember to bolt it to.

A bit more this morning. Drilled a couple of holes in the rear crossmember. The made a bodyside hanger and bolt plate. Welded a strip of metal too it and fed it in from the end of the crossmember. Made the exhaust side hanger as well. Painted it all with epoxy and left to dry. 6

Painted the brackets black then put it all together. I was hoping it might be a bit more V8 like but if anything it is quiter than before, not the end of the world. Then moved onto this. Ia rust blister appesred and I prodded it, it was an old repair I had missed and welded to when I restored it, to avoid burning all the surrounding sealer paint and wax off I am gojng to glue a patch over it. Found a piece of thin stainless and cut it to shape. I've primed that with epoxy and will stick it on with some tiger seal. Then while I was dirty I did another exhaust job, taking thd Lotus tailpipe from this To this, it's clamped with a stainless mikalor clamp so not too obtrusive. Also fixed the radio, turns out it wasn't plugged in!

I like the look of those tail pipes, more so than the single exit on my tdi. I wonder if the backbox and attached bit of pipeto the centre box has a common shape

I wouldn't be suprised if they follow the same route there isn't really any other space/ route for it.

I cut all the hanger brackets from the chassis on the Rezin Rockit, bar one which needs cutting anyway.
But will be redesigning it all anyway as my plan is a side exit.
I for some reason do like the downturned pipe, but also a diagonal slash cut for mine.

Not much on the car but I have been fixing my jacking beam, it has always leaked a little but it's pouring out now and it won't stay up. Pulled it appart. The ram is just a bottle jack laid on it's side. Managed to get it appart easily enough, pump seal and plunger dia 12mm Main piston and seal diameter 40mm. Jack in pieces, with the outer tube/ fluid reservoir removed. All the main surfaces look OK so I have ordered new seals and a ball bearing to replace the one I lost out of the valve body, hopefully I can get it all back together OK.

New seals for jack turned up, with the aid of a cup of hot water they pushed on easily. Popped the valve body in with a couple of new ball bearings. Also popped the new seal on the pump rod and put it all together and filled it with oil. Seems to work OK and nothing is leaking so far, left it overnight to see what happens. Also need to find a bung for the fill hole as it didn't have one.

What size plug or bung do you need for the hole?

It id 8mm, turns out the plastic transit caps they fitted to a concentric slave cylinder pipes and I had hoarded were the perfect size, didn't leak overnight so it's all back together and goes higher than it ever has.
Car stuff for the next few weeks will be limited to the urgent, I have a task to fit one of the sheds down the side out as a candle factory for my daughter (she makes scented soy candles and reed diffusers and is taking the house over)

Leaving your place the last time I was telling Sally she missed so much. Big silly grin here at your factory building.

It will be very much a micro factory in a 6'x 5' brick shed but should get most of her kit out of the house, The building is already there so it will be insulation, lining, wiring, some sort of flooring then a workbench and storage.

Nothing on my cars today but did spend best part of 1 1/2 hours changing the drive belt on father in-laws 17 year old Doblo. I find the car hatefull at the best of times but what idiot decided you need to remove a wheel, complete undertray then the skin on your knuckles trying to thread it blindly through a gap narrower than the belt, I could do all 4 on the Range rover in half the time!
Range Rover MOT on tuesday don't think there is anything major, but we will see.

Yep, modern day Fiats, etc. can be a right royal PITA to change belts and oil filters on. The alternator is usually tucked away round the back of the engine too.

Yes I saw the alternator, if that goes he's taking it to a garage!, I thought a belt would be a 5 minute job. Mrs says let it break down then he might actually part with some cash and buy a newer car.(he's 81 has plenty of savings but won't spend it, trying to persuade him a rainy day has come!)

Range Rover passed MOT, couple of advisories, play in drivers door hinge (two of the bolts are loose so easy enough to fix), steering damper bushes deteriorated.
He also commented on the emissions being strangely low even for running on LPG, 119pmm HC and 0.27% CO, perhaps the engine is in better condition than I thought!
With that done I can think about the jobs for this year:
- Replace all rubber fuel lines and seals clean and flush injectors. - Replace front discs, callipers wheel bearings and hoses (OK for MOT but a couple of calliper pistons are tight, and the discs are beginning to rust in from the edge. - Re-build spare ECM with new resistors / capacitors and re-solder joints. - plus the two items above.

Result. Never knew a door hinge could be an advisory!

nor did I,
exact words were:
"Drivers door hinge deteriorated but the door can still be readily opened and closed offside front[6.2.3(c)(i)]"

Bought the new steering damper bushes, best part of £50 for poly ones or £4 for bearmach rubber ones, dead easy to change, not particularly important and only a couple of thousand miles a year so the rubber ones it is. First task though is to make a wire and switch up to replace the failed thermo time switch for cold morning starts.
