Just a thought with the false neutral, check the detent plunger and housing for wear and also see if you can find any settings for end float and shim placement in the gearbox, it's not unknown for them to be wrong from new, let alone 50 years later. Mikata pistons used to be good, Japanese quality, I would assume their rods are as well.

Thats a good point, and one I've not really thought about before, that it might have been getting hung up on the detent.
Sadly the shift drum is pretty much the first component to go in the cases, and I've no desire to take it apart again right now, haha. It wasn't 'bad' just required a firmer and more purposeful shift on 4-5 or 5-4 than the other gears which go in with a flick of the level.
Yes I've used Mikata pistons plenty of times, so I'm fairly confident about the rods.
I put some gearbox oil in it the other day, and the Mx5 is mobile again, so I'm just waiting for lockdown to ease then I should be able to find out how the engine if feeling after all that work.

Spotted an immaculate, standard t500 in Liverpool last week, looked and sounded fantastic.
