My son passed his test Tuesday woohoo
Now I have a 106 which I've had in my name for 18 months and it's taxed I will of course be giving it to him Now my question is road tax under the new tax regime do I have to surrender the tax and retax it as it will now be in his name Then have to pay the tax again from my own pocket and loose a month

Would highly recommend you wait a couple days until November, when I bought my 750 I realised I was going to pay a months worth for a couple days at the end of a month but by that point I was stuck about 150 miles from home with a SORN'd car so had no choice but to suck up the extra cost!

Why change the registered keeper? I would guess for the purpose of insurance. Most insurance companies I know of tend to get a little wierd if the registered keeper is not the proposer on the insurance policy. I can only assume that the OP's son shall be the main driver and proposer on the insurance policy. Of course, one way around it would be to insure the main driver as also a named driver.

I've never had a problem with insurance when my Dad was the registered keeper of my car, I bought it before I turned 17 so he had to be the owner. I would just keep it in your name and let him drive it. Also, I think that DVLA can change cars owner within the family without adding a extra owner.

I'm forever swapping cars with the wife, son and MIL, car needs to be in the main drivers name for ni on all insurances nowdays, even if they are named on your insurance when they become the main driver they have to be the reg keeper (NOT the owner but the keeper on the V5) wife is on my trade policy so no problem there but my son and MIL were causing lost road fund cos of the new frikken rules so we "officialy" do the swap at the end of the month every time now to save loosing out.

Why change the registered keeper? To save a possible fine in the future? Law states that if the keeper changes (as in this case) the V5 must be updated accordingly. Failing to do so is an offence.

keep it in your name add him as named driver V5 and VEL are about the keeper/owner - nothing to do with the driver.
