Just seen this thread. One of my favourite cars in pretty much the best colour. Looks brilliant mate. You seem to have the same ethos as me that a damn good clean and attention to the small details go a long way. Keeping tabs on your progress. Enjoy the car. Slightly jealous. Thanks for the kind words! I'm a bit of a stickler for details - which can be my undoing when I get caught up fixing small problems whilst ignoring much bigger ones! PistolPete les509 thanks for the tip - I'll take a look later today!

Pulled the tail light bulb out - "this doesn't look blown".
Put it back in an voila! A working light, I mustve dislodged it in changing the indicators over.
Love a simple fix!

New plates arrived. They're less fussy and at least look a little more legal. I think they clean the front and rear up nicely. They're attached with some foam tape for extra cleanliness! All my service parts have arrived, despite a small annoyance (the courier put the parcel over the fence and didn't leave a note, so it sat in the garden for a day or two and got soaked ). So that's next on the list!

Lovely car you've got there! I love mine (and really need to get going on it again...). I also had an MX5 NB, funnily enough. You have impeccable taste Bookmarked!

New plates always have a smartening effect. It's all in the detail.
Good work.

drdantastic it's a nice choice to have! Comfy, cool daily and a more sports orientated car for some twisty weekend driving Geordie the more I work on the car/look at it the more I keep picking up on details/things that bug me. After the service I'll make a start on the smaller issues! I see you're just about to tip over 1k posts, congrats

I thought I'd cross the line with a post here if that's ok? Do I get a carriage clock or something from the mods?

So the rear fog light(s?) don't appear to work, although there is no error code on the dash - which is strange as there seem to be error codes for everything else..! Another niggle has manifested itself in that the rear O/S tail light keeps intermittently going out. This seems to be tied to the indicator bulb as removing/reinstalling the indicator fixes the issue. I'll investigate this when I get the chance. It was very annoying when I accidentally dropped the indicator bulb into the light cluster in the work car park and had to remove the light to get it out... Also the wiper mech on the passenger side has play, which is resulting in the arm fouling the bonnet - a fairly common issue apparently. This is causing me a lot of grief as the wiper makes an incredibly high pitched screech as it travels across the screen. Listening to nails on a chalk board whilst driving isn't fun! Despite the niggles I'm still very taken with the car. The first big job (which I can't tackle myself) is finding a decent body shop to give the car the once over (if anyone can recommend one in the W Midlands it'd be good!) and fix any rust before the weather gets too wet and salty.

Not sure if it's the same, but I swapped the plastic P11 wiper spindles on my Primera for the metal ones from the earlier first generation Primera (P10). When the plastic ones wear on the P11's, as they always do, the wiper arms start fouling the bonnet in a similar way to what you describe on your E34.

The passenger arm does look like it's the wrong one as it sits proud and the blades themselves are actually mismatched, but there is also play in the passenger side mech at the shaft/spline. I think it's a bit of both, luckily I can stop the noise for periods of time by just raising abs lowering the blade once in a while - so it's not an immediate problem (read: I'm feeling lazy and changing the mech on the E39 was a total pig...)!

Changing the mechanism is a pig of a job and I believe the bushing is NLA from BMW so you may be stuck with what you can source from a breakers and that may be worse than how it is currently! It's tempting me to do a DTM style single wiper mechanism...

Replacing the mechanism is a lot of work but it's all reasonably accessible, so with a bit of elbow grease, you'll be able to pull it of.... Maybe you could try to scource a cheap secondhand unit and try make up some bushings yourself before changing it out. I'm sure the bushings are still available, you'll just have to order them from China/Taiwan or... They don't seem to hard to doodle up yourself though.... www.fumei168.hipages.tw/?13,e34-wiper-connecting-rod-copper-bushing

Great car, I run a 525i SE as a daily and the M50 2.5 is nice and reliable.
Wipers hitting the bonnet is indeed a common issue, I think it's mainly due to slop in the linkage. My drivers side one catches slightly so I raised it up a few splines to clear. Saw one in the scrappy and it had worn through completely leaving a hole in the wiper arm!

I've seen a few guides online regarding complete replacement but I hadn't actually considered fixing it myself, @sjiefaa that might be a nice little project - thanks for the link
