I usually daren't mention Electric Cars ever but surely there's a few cool old ones knocking about? There's obviously Johnny's mad Enfield.. And then I saw this today.. That lot is in the back of yes you guessed it... I never ever thought I'd actually want to own something electric but this changes that. The story behind it is that this, dubbed the "Lectric Leopard", was built at the Renault plant sans an engine, then sent off to US Electricar - who plonked all the electric gubbins displayed above into the back of the little 5. Whether it's any good or not I have no idea So what else is out there??

That Lucas car is 30 years ahead of its time. Plenty of rumours from 30-40 years ago that the oil giants held back a lot of alternative power development by foul means or fair. When you think there were electric trains running not just on the underground but on suburban networks well before the first world war you'd think that over 100 years later we'd be further forward with electric road vehicles.
I'd have a 'Lectric Leopard in a heartbeat, even with its gawpy US spec lights that's a pretty looking little thing.

Hi, I remember reading an article 30 odd years ago that said they had the motor and controls all sorted, they were then waiting for battery technology to catch up. Advances have been made but by and large we're still waiting.

Mystery Machine I reckon a big reason you like that electric cab is that it looks an awful lot like a modernised Brubaker Box. One of my favourite things people are doing now is sticking electric motors in old cars. I'd love to do this to the Princess but I don't have the funds or knowledge to do it. Instead, here's what they do with Beetles.

There's an article in this months PPC about a dutch guy who has fitted an electric motor in the front of a Matra Murena, keeping the petrol engine in the back. A Murena, not the actual one. Playing with the easy photo add.

Anything built by ZElectric Motors: While their Bug is the most well known, they now have a few other VW-based EVs available. Or you could build a Land Rover from a golf cart:

I'm actually waiting patiently for the battery tech to get better 8) over here we got alot of tax going if we want to switch engines, while EV conversions are tax free the idea of EV + a few solars panel or similair is quite interesting !

There are a few new types of battery tech coming out - one is basically a gel made with carbon nanotubes for the dielectric (faster charging and greater capacity) and the other is a modified Lithium-ion battery, which came about by accident! (4x as many charges before capacity is affected)

Fiat Panda Elettra press photo. The car was introduced in 1990 but its weight (1150 kg) did not make of it an interesting option as it was moved by only 19 HP

When you think there were electric trains running not just on the underground but on suburban networks well before the first world war you'd think that over 100 years later we'd be further forward with electric road vehicles. There were electric cars in production from 1907 (Detroit Electric, Cunningham, etc) which did reasonably well. Combustion engines were always more practical in use, though.
