Remember that the car will be lower, with chunky bumpers and what not. Also tyres will make a difference. Red couldbwork, but that shade looks too bright

Well folks, I now have two wheels ready for paint , but in doing so I have managed to sand half of my thumbnail off! I decided to have a brake from the wheels, to give my thumbnail a chance to grow back and because I was getting a bit fed up. I have been spending some time looking at red paints and found these that I really like.. deep red candy.. and this, cherry candy.. Thing is I know nothing about painting, but would I be right thinking that candy paint needs to be applied over a base coat? but what colour base coat? also how much paint am I going to need to do 4 wheels? The candy paint costs £10 a can then if I'm right I will need primer, base coat and clear coat , so my cheap wheels are getting more and more expensive lol! Anyway with my sanding thumb injured I cracked on with cleaning up some more suspension stuff. Got the wishbones wire wheeled primed and painted, same with drop links and anti roll bar clamps. From this. to this.. Next I did the subframe, once I had wire wheeled it I noticed this.. see this bit, think its an engine mount. Well it should bolt on and off, but it has been welded up at the side and underneath like this... Now I could just grind out the welds and remove it that way, but I was wondering why it has been done at all? it would have been much easier to bolt on a new mount if it was worn or damaged, but it doesn't look worn or damaged. The subframe came from a track car so is this a common mod to stiffen things up? should I leave it on? I left it on for now and gave the whole subframe a going over with the rust killer. Today I am going to meet Oscar my new grandson, so no tinkering till Sunday. Thanks for looking Steve.

Starting from scratch with candy paint is very expensive. Because of the type of paint you have to use their brand of primer, their basecoat + candy + Lacquer so to buy enough to paint 4 wheels would be expensive!

Thanks for the input smart. Well if I were to buy 1 can of each of their primer, base, candy and clear coat it would cost £52, so at a very minimum I would need 2 cans of each? so thats £104 (more than the wheels cost) Think I'm going to have to find a cheaper option! How does a normal metallic paint work? is it just primer, paint then clear coat?

This is a bodge... nothing more. Chop out, and refit as per standard. Most likely had a dying upper mount, and thought the excessive movement was due to the lower steady being "loose"

Oh forgot to ask, is there any difference between gti and standard steering racks? Cheers steve As far as I know, if it's standard non-pas its the same, about 3.9 turns lock to lock afaik. I THINK a pas rack is 3.2 turns. There are 2 different fit drives however, square and splined. Liking the progress on this btw! Seem to be more and more base models getting attention these days.

Thanks for the input guys. chairchild I thought it might be a bodge, will grind it off later jackmorris did a bit of googling last night, your right about the 3.9 turns on non pas rack, so may as well stick with the one on the car. I will check to see what type mine is ( square or spline ) then either keep the other if its the same or get rid if not. Cheers steve

You won't get great finish with rattle cans but there's plenty of videos online to help

Well the weather has really turned poo up here, but I managed to get the subframe and anti roll bar painted. No pics cos its all piled in my shed, will get some once the rain stops. I also got the other strut painted, this time I tried the hammerite without primer to see if it went on any better since it says on the tin "no need to prime paint straight on to rust" . It still went on poo, but it had been treated with rust killer, that is also a kind of primer so me being me thinks ok, I will do exactly what the instructions say, so I wire brushed a strut top that I wont be using and painted the hammerite straight on, and it was still poo! So my official verdict on hammerite is jobie, jobie, jobie! I will have to give it 2/10 because on the tin it says it was red paint and it was red, but I'm not convinced its paint! I have also just ordered a pair of strut top bearings, so once they arrive I can build the struts back up, and once thats done I can stick these on .... I found them on spanish ebay and couldn't resist since they only cost a couple of euros. Cheers for looking steve.

Well today I was hoping to get some time spent on Doris stuff, but then my mum came to visit followed by my girlfriend's mum, so only had a couple of hours. I started off by applying paint striper to the other two alloys, then I had to move them into the shed cos the dogs decided they wanted to sniff them! Then I moved on to the gti valence, I had already had a bit of a go at sanding it and it looked like this. I gave it a bit more of a rub down then gave it a coat of plastic primer .. it had a bit of a reaction in a couple of places like this... and this... I think this could have been because of me putting too much paint on. Anyway I will leave it the 24 hours that it says on the can then give it a rub down and add a bit more. Next I scraped of as much paint as I could from the alloys and gave them a rinse off. My thumb nail is almost grown back now so I might have a bash at them tomorrow. It would be nice to get them both looking like this ... by the end of Sunday. Thing is once all four are ready for paint I'm going to have to make up my mind what colour to paint them. I'm still on red but still considering a dark grey. Black with red wheels, now where have I seen that before? Oh yeah I know!! Oh and here is the subframe painted.... That's about it for the day , thanks for looking. Steve.
