Hi all. I am nearing ever closer to 40, and have the itch to get back into retro ownership. I haven't had anything particularly interesting since 2006 when I sold my 205 MI16. I quite fancy a MGB GT with a more modern powerplant or perhaps something that will appreciate in future years like the Elan M100. Whats your thoughts folks.

After having 3 MGB GT's, including one I converted to V8, I'd say Elan every time !

LOL wasnt expecting that. I have never driven either vehicle, but I really love the look of a chrome or sebring bumpered GT. I used to love a play with cars also, was thinking along the lines of a zetec, XE or MX5 lump in it. But again the elan would need to remain fairly standard to retain and value at all, by all accounts they are great wee care for a FWD, however in recent years I prefer a RWD set up.

Having ticked your box of MGB GT with an MX lump, I'd still say the Elan. Why? For the handling alone, even the best setup GT wont corner like an Elan...I've tried to keep up with a friend in his +2 and I was just left due to the GT not being great on the rear end for corners, Mine has all the uprated kit too. However I would not change my GT for anything, it's a right laugh and was even better with the Supercharger on (will be fitted again in winter).

Not sure I like looking at the M100. Used to say the same about the MGB GT, but looking at some of the modded ones over the past few years, I've really started to like them.

I think the M100 is a cracking looking motor, I also think in the next few years they will rocket in value. The MGB also appeals in aesthetics. Also I am fond of the Scimitar GTE, and the trusty old MX5, oh and a TVR S1,2 or 3. The TVR mainly or its noise.

I've had my 'b for 11 years now and have absolutley no regrets at all, nice and easy to freshen it up with different styles & mods throughout the years - i also think the mg scene is changing dramatically at the moment with far more modded 'bs on the scene. There's more than a few on here, Nathans as above, gojos resto cafe racer style, adamsbgt etc. Here's mine now, Finally nearing completion after a 4 year makeover! So the mgb gets the vote from me!

I would be looking at the Lotus Elise, as the early ones are quite cheap now, and I can see them being a future classic, so a good investment

The Elan M100 is much derided by Lotus enthusiasts, think it has to overcome this in order to appreciate in value . . .

yes, I believe they are not a fan of the FWD set up. I think in time it may be accepted, perhaps become even more desirable due to it being out in the cold for so long.

OP should actually drive whatever they fancy rather than just going on looks to help make up their minds. What about Jensen Healey ? Hatch version - More common convertible -

yes I agree, I need to drive a few, I'm a big loon at 6'4" so not all cars are comfortable for me. As you say it makes it the bargain lotus, its fibreglass so no body corrosion, the chassis i think is galv, bulletproof engine and sublime handling, mild tuning can achieve in excess of 200bhp. Not to mention they are a pretty rare sight on the roads. I quite like the look of the Jensen also, they pricey?

More food for thought, how about an early Honda S2000? I'm sure it's not long before they are gracing the pages of this parish!

Want something unusual? How about a Vauxhall VX 220 (I think that's the model) Lotus chassis, based on the Elise I think, mid mounted bombproof Vauxhall mechanicals, partsbin bits so cheap spares, nice shape, what's not to like? Saw one the other day growling through Bridgnorth and thought "YEEEEAAAAAAH! WANT!" And gotta be rare enough to be a future classic, which i'm not sure the fwd Lotus will ever be, it always struck me as a bit of a lash up and as far as i'm concerned, if its FWD, it's not a sports car! Being a Triumph man, i've never been a fan of the "B" but some of the cars emerging now have a certain brutal charm and with the right engine, an MGB could be ok. Saying that however, a couple of weeks ago, I saw a GT6 at the TSSC Donington show with a turbo'd Volvo lump in it - what a weapon!!!!
Jensen Healeys are going up in price along with most classic sports cars, they were never exactly common to start with and they are monumental rot boxes, if you find one going cheap, there will probably be a good reason!
