Going by the sad outcome of a collision over the weekend between a HPF Firenza and a Proton GEN II, I'd say I'm more concerned now than I was.
Not sure if having a roll cage fitted in my car (Magnum) would be enough in a similar situation.

Not sure if having a roll cage fitted in my car (Magnum) would be enough in a similar situation. 31yr old male released on bail after driving whilst uninsured! The rollcage would go one of two ways IMHO. It it were a basic rollcage without spreader plates installed it could potentially be worse since the cage would simply rip through the floor. With a good rollcage with everything on it (that is a bar running behind the dash etc. and with it being welded with spreader plates onto the floor (the bolts question is an interesting question which I shall leave aside for now) the chances are that you would possibly walk away assuming you were also wearing a helmet etc. However, it still would not be as safe as a modern and furthermore things like feeling the shock of an accident would still happen due to the lack of crumple zones. Plus without wearing a helment one's head hitting a rollcage is not what exactly a pleasant scenario. I do love my Retros, but I am also no fool to seeing that they are not all that safe.

I think I was shocked by how the Firenza didn't look too bad, but now as I sit here typing this and realise how close my leg is to the door, there really isn't a lot of room for the front of another vehicle to go.
I guess I was hoping by having a proper cage fitted any side intrusion would simply push the car away somewhat. (Presuming the left hand side was clear of objects)

well looking at most smaller french cars that I've seen in accidents, most of the occupants have been seriously injured or died, especially clios, chance you take driving older cars though, you get clubbed by an e class, you arnt going to come off best in a mk1 escort.

Ford Sierra crash test The Sierra is a car I would have considered quite large and modern but it collapses. Having worked as a crash test engineer, modern cars are definitely safer in crashes. The amount of work that goes into developing the crash performance is immense.

Would have been interesting to see how something with legendary toughness like one of the early 60's Chrysler Imperials would have looked in the same situation

This has done the rounds before, the amount of rust flying out of that Bel Air wouldn't have helped it much.

There has to be the comment made, modern cars are being made safe to crash, not drive, and falling asleep at the wheel is becoming such a problem, they are fitting systems to wake up the driver. Ttfn Glenn

I know an old man who was front seat passenger in a Ford Customline that hit a house way back when. He and the two guys in the back seat got away with relatively minor injuries while the driver died with the steering wheel through his chest. They might have all got away with it if they'd had seatbelts.

take a look at this comparison between big 90's barges, quite surprising one of the oldest designs looked the most stable.

Not just the design of crumple zones, car seats are safer nowadays, holding you in place as the seatbelt tensioner does its magic. Steering wheels/ columns that collapse/move out of your way.
None of the old plastic seats with lap belts ......
You can make the car car as strong as you want, but its the sudden impact that does the intial damage to the humam body.
I was reading a thread on a US based forum a while ago on this subject, lots of posters saying how they were ok in thier 1970's era built like a tank pick up truck, until there was a post about one 1970's 4x4 pick up getting wiped out by its modern counterpart .......
