Regrettably life changes, and once again it's time for me to put my mx5 up for sale. I first bought this car in spring 2008, completely standard. Over the next 3 years I daily drove it and modified it, including a rotary engine swap, before selling it to Autolink in spring 2011. Then in June 2014 I bought it back from Autolink, knowing it needed a bit of recommissioning. Through last summer and into the early part of this year I spent a lot of time getting it back to a good road worthy state, since I've got in back on the road it's done about 2,000 miles. As well as brining the car back to it's former glory, I also bought loads of parts that I'd always wanted on an mx5, like the Momo wheel and VX220 seats, which help make it a really special car to be in.
This Mx5 started life as the 88hp de-tuned UK spec car, it's got the manual steering rack and windy windows, no frills here, nice and light! As I mentioned in the previous paragraph, it's had a couple of engine swaps, but is currently running a full power 1.6 from a 1990 car. The current engine is properly registered with the DVLA, with the correct capacity and engine number on the V5. The 1.6 engine is internally standard, but a combination of Megasquirt, 4-2-1 exhaust and ITBs mean it's definitely faster than stock!
While it has 134,000 miles on the clocks, this only really applies to the chassis. So many uprated and replacement parts have been fitted over the years, most of them within the last 12 months, that it feels like it's done considerably fewer miles than that.
I've focused all my attention on getting the mechanical side of the car top notch, as driving it is what matters to me, and as such the cosmetics are what lets this car down. The body work isn't great, the metal work has all been repaired properly and is strong, but the paint is rough. Most panels have some scratches and small dents on them, and it's had a number of paint repairs over it's time so if a few shades of red. The bonnet is the worst part of the paint, it's only had a very rough rattle can job, please see the detailed pictures of paint condition. The roof could do with replacing really. It keeps the worst of the weather out, but the rear window is split and the stitching is coming away from the main hood and the vinyl is very old so shrinking and going brittle with lots of small cracks appearing all over. It's been like this for about a year without really deteriorating, so if it was just a track car I wouldn't worry but as a daily it was next on my list of things to fix.
While we're listing the problems, one of the front brake rotors is very lightly warped, causing a bit of pedal pulsation under heavy braking. The 'start' position for the ignition key doesn't work, so I've fitted a starter button.
Ignoring the rough edges though, over all it's a very mechanically sound car, with a lot of mods that makes it a really good fast road or track car. The engine pulls really nicely, sounds great with the ITBs with that awesome super sharp throttle response that only ITBs give. The clutch bites well, the gearbox shifts well. The handling is wonderfully tight, the manual rack gives so much more feedback than power steering ever could and together with the bushes and recent alignment, it really gives confidence to make progress round B roads.
Pricing a car like this is tough, its got some really good points with the recent work done to it and the huge list of modifications, but equally I appreciate that it's not the tidiest! I'm going to ask to £1800ono, which I hope is fair. Sorry I'm not interested in swaps or part exs. Car's located in Bromsgrove, just south of Birmingham.
