Hello fellas!
After years of spectating, i joined the RR club to join some topics mostly of old vans and/or Fiat.
I completed a Fiat 127 from 1975 a couple of months ago, some sort of. A car is never done is a thing i believe in... After "completing" it, it was time to find something new. I love the old vans and trucks, and started looking for a combination of a old van/truck and my favourite manufacturer Fiat.
It was a nice search where a few Fiats went through... The Fiat 238, 241, 615, 615 N1, 900t, 850t, 600t.... I liked the design and the suicide doors of the 615 the most so that must be the one. Subito.it and Kijiji.it helped me to find one, because in the Netherlands aren't any of them left. Lots of people easily didn't mail me back, caused by the fact that i can't speak any Italian. But after a lot patience I found one, who is in the Netherlands now,
It was the first time I saw it in real life, and he was in a good state. It runs, but the gearbox sounded not that good. It's rattling a lot by shifting, so the clutch won't come loose. I started to take the gearbox of and ordering some new parts for the clutch. It is my first project of the 615,
After hours of cleaning:
Because I have no parts yet for the 615, I also started to take a look at the loading bay of it. It was covered with a steel plate, and i knew there must be a wooden original floor under it, well the pictures say enough:
The first thing that needs to be done when i have the parts, is to take the 615 to the RDW to get the dutch license for it....
Hopefully you all love it as much as i already do, haha

Awesome! Very awesome. I wanted one for some time now, I thought about getting the Zastava version, as it had more powerful engines...
Looking forward to the progress!

What a cool machine. Does this have the engine from a 1400? What kind of load can it carry? Here in the USA everybody thinks you have to have huge trucks with huge engines to move a few bags of groceries.

Here in the USA everybody thinks you have to have huge trucks with huge engines to move a few bags of groceries. No it's equipped with a 1900 cc diesel engine (without a turbo) and produced 50 hp. It can load around 1900 kg, so it can be driven with a normal car license. So it's like a van these days, it looks bigger then it actually is. Thanks for the comments so far!

Haven't done that much on the 615 caused by waiting, waiting, and waiting for new parts... And guess, the most of them arrived, and are the wrong ones.
So, the little things done so far:
Done a lot of inspecting on the brakes, suspension, bearings and stuff like that. I think I need to replace almost everything from the braking, except the drums and the brakelines underneath the 615. The rest is or filled with axle oil on the back, or with brakefluid in the front. Therefor all the wheelcylinders must be replaced too. The bearings are running smootly after adjusting them. When I have all the parts, I will clean the whole thing up, and put new grease in the hubs at the front, so they keep on running smootly. But that is a future forum update
On the photo above you can see that the tyres are very very dry. Some of the cracks are 2 mm widht, so these will be replaced to.... when my wallet is filled again
When the truck arrived, the chassis at the back was a little bend. That was a thing that worries me the most when I saw the truck the first time. I throught that the chassis wasn't straight, caused by an accident or so. I hoped that one of the bushes of the leafsprings were stuck, so the truck has no suspension at one side. But unfortunately that wasn't the case.
I looked further and saw that the shock absorder missed a couple of rubbers on the underside of it. When unscrewing the nut, the whole chassis started to make a cracking sound. Normally that sound is something you don't want to hear, but in this case it was the sound that I needed! When the nut came loose, the truck says a big "PANG and BANG" (complete with comic type words) and is now as straight as the landscape of the Netherlands. I never knew that a shock absorber could be so stuck! Because I couldn't not find original shocks I looked for some alternative. I found out that the front shocks of a little DAF LF fits. So in the picture beneath, the new, and old one.
Because the shocks has been stuck for some time, the upper support of the shock absorber was broken. A quick weld will do the trick,
So far "suspension-gate" I will keep you updated on this one.
Some little things more:
Changed the way ugly black wipers for Fiat 600 wipers in the right colour and material, I'm very very glad with this little feature. It looks way better and much more original.
Thanks to Fiat500ricambi.com who helped me sorting out some things! There are a few parts available for a 615, the rest is one big puzzle. So every little help on the parts search is welcome!
And at last I changed the lightswitch, also from a Fiat 600. The switch on the picture is black, while the original has a chrome switch. So I only took the inner parts of the switch to fix it. The outside is now still original. That is what a love about a old car, you can really repair something without throwing away something that has only a small defect.

Nice little update and a result on the chassis. A good few years back my boss bought a CF for us to convert into a horse box and on the way back from collection, I followed this thing crabbing so much it was almost sideways. Got it home, slacked off the U-bolts and three good swings with a sledgehammer later, straight as a die. Who needs laser tracking?

Any update is good . Waiting ,and getting the wrong parts..pff..but..the "all"FIAT family parts will help..it's just like LEGO...almost everything will fit !
You must happy with the chassis, now beinging in a good "shape" . And the news shocks, very nice alternative.
Ciao

It has been for over a month with updating the thread.
That's because of several things, searching and purchasing parts is one of them, but waiting is still the main thing on this project. In the past weeks I bought some new brakeshoes for the front axle. On the left and on the right were different brakes mounted, the plate on the back was slightly different, the shoes were completly different. I had made some pictures of it, but I couldn't find them now .
On the rear axle the lining wear is new, so the alu-shoes are still the original ones. The reason for that, is that it was much easier to purchase, and there were no high shipping costs instead of ordering from Italy. I also brought the drums to the same "brake-man" to make them fit with the new lining. On the following pictures it's clearly visible it has been a major update. I think the little truck didn't have much brakepower left in the last years in Italy. The wheelcylinders are also new on the front and rear axle, they are the same as the front ones of a Fiat 900t.
Oo, and by the way, I also changed the two sealings in the wheelhub on the back, that solved the leaking problem.
The "brake-man" was Mascotte Zuid in Eindhoven. A real oldtimer specialist with a very very nice oldschool workshop. It is like going 30 years back in time when entering the building. I really love sucha a little stores, with lots of experience a passion! On the picture below is shown the outside, the picture says enough I think
Picture of a several years back (Eindhoven in beeld .nl)
In the mean time i'm still waiting for the clutch, and i'm looking for tires. That's a real disaster! The truck is fitted with 6.00 16 tires, but there are only a few manufacturers left who have these ones. The most of these "few" only delivers tires for passengercars. It's -offcourse- very important that the loadindex is oke.
Has anyone here experience in Camac tires?:
Camac 6.00 16 CD110
I also purchased a drivers-manual in Deutsch, that's very very easy to have. The old manuals are full of information for a lot of maintenance things and tightening moments. I'n very pleased to have this one . For the rest I did some smaller repairs, the lock of the doorhandle is repaired. That was a nice little project on it's own. It still looks completly original, but inside everything has changed.
Hopefully the clutch is coming soon, the first thing that needs to been done is to get the dutch license.
Last little thing, I have some other cars in the collection. They are all Italian except "Günther". Günther is a 1980 firedept Mercedes 308 van of 1980. Almost everyone that knows me a little bit, knows I own Günther and they often ask me "how is it going with Günther?" . Nobody askes about the bus, only Günther. A couple of years ago the police was looking for some reason for the owner of the old fire-van. When they have found me after a while, they informed the collegues on the walkietalkie "we found the owner of the Mercedes Firebus". The first -not that clever- reaction of me was: "That van has a name" , "His name is Günther!". The face expression of the police officer was priceless! My friends still often laugh about this adventure. So you can all imagine that I really want to name the 615 also. Because "truck", "615", "that" or whatever sounds a bit rude for the sweet little old Fiat. I looked for a nice name, and saw the name of one of the old owners of the Fiat 615. That must be the name! Real Italian, and offcourse it totally fits by the history of the 615. They owned it for 30 years!
So I proudly present the new name of the 615..... Maria Luisa
A picture of Günther below,
Hopefully I can make a clutch update soon!
