Do Imprezas have typical Japanese reliability? Also are they as ridiculous on fuel as I imagine them to be? I am thinking of one as a daily and am wondering if it is a totally stupid idea? I know I'm not going to be getting 30mpg but above 20 would be good! It is rather hard to find them in LHD over here but they do exist. I've run a UK Spec '00 Turbo 2000 wagon for the last 4 years, apart form regular servicing it has cost me an exhaust system, tyres and brakes in the last 50,000 miles. Probably the most reliable car I've ever owned. Mixed MPG is low 20's, on a Motorway run at a steady 70 it has touched 35. Enjoy yourself too much and it's single figures.

Reliability is really only a problem if they either
A) aren't serviced properly B) are 'improved' with 'upgrades' which are not thought out properly

I think on one level, they are brilliant. The performance, combined with saloon, or estate, practicality, is hard to knock. Never driven one but I'm sure I'd be impressed. But..... I still can't shake the feeling that actually, they are one of the most uncool cars ever. Call that opinion unreasonable, and it probably is, but I would just feel embarrassed owning one. Sorry to not be RR positive.

Sorry to not be RR positive. I can see where you are coming from, the "crashed into Halfords" look started somewhere, unfortunately these and evo's are at the forefront of that line of thinking. I just can't get it out of my head that even though I want one many of the ones I've seen are indeed owned by half arsed yobbos. I don't want to be seen as one of them.

The above opinions are exactly the reason I bought mine. Last time I checked that WAS a good reason for getting a car here... Because previously owned by a particular demographic, so get one and do something different.
To avoid something simply because others modify it the same way kinda defeats the point really.

I've owned one for about four years now and love it.
Mine looks very standard, buy under the skin it's been 'played with' a bit.
Standard is the new modified.

Over the years you could level the same concerns at many of the cars that are today considered seriously collectable, the good news about the chavvy racers is that they run out of skill around the time they discover that a fast 4x4 will understeer in corners when being driven way in excess of anything that is acceptable on public roads. The result being lots of reasonably cheap spares to keep my car on the road.

That is exactly how my wife thinks! Her words are more like this "Oh Rob do we have to get a silly loud drug dealer car?" Luckily all things car related are in my hands! I am going on holiday the first week of August nut then after that then I will begin the hunt! I have found a few online but they all have rotten rear arches! I think I will broaden the search to Holland, Switzerland and France!

I never really went much on the Impreza, I saw too many try hard 555 replicas and the image put me right off. However, I've noticed a lot of these around my way recently and really quite like the 1st gen models, provided they are 100% OEM.
