I think there was less than 10bhp between big and small turbo models when they were new but it is cheaper to get the power out of the big turbo. The small turbo is more civilised like an escort rs turbo compared to a fiesta rs turbo. passionford.com/forum/general-car-related-discussion/330394-diffrence-between-cosworth-big-turbo-and-small-turbo-engine.htmlThis will highlight the main down side to a small turbo escos. They were ford developed and the management is not so good for getting the power out of the engine. So if you want more than the original 220bhp you many need to look elsewhere. Mine is running 330bhp which is not a hard figure to get to with a big turbo model. If you can live with the standard power and you go and look and you can see nothing needs doing for you to be happy with it your on to a good start. I doubt it is standard power though as the filter and exhaust look aftermarket suggesting its been somewhere to up the power a little. You would be owner number 14 on the blue one which is a few to many for me. It looks like it has been used daily looking at engine bay pic which would be ok if you are going to do the same but if you want something nice to use on nice days it will probably need work to look like such a car.

From what others have said I think @mystery Machine is the closest to say what is viable.
Mk1 FRSs seem to be picking up interest after the press cars did alot of damage to their reputation as a result of 'unforgiving' LSDs in them. For what they cost they do represent excellent VFM. Whilst they are lacking the Cosworth badge they for me represent Ford during their better times despite the old school Ford and 'RWD sucks' fraternity thinking otherwise.
Escort Cosworths are OK, but they really need to be tickled a little to truly enjoy them.
Yes, a Porker can be bought for the same sum but I bet the Ford would be cheaper to keep! Porsches espeically later ones gained all sorts of strange and expensive things ; £300 for a recon lower arm anyone? That is before you get to tyres ; yes could fit part worns but why risk it on a car than begs to be driven hard? You don't take a model out and drop her off back home eh? I guess there is also the image and generation that come with the Ford over other things.
IMHO I think its rivals have helped also push the price up in combination with the Ford tax (Lancia Integrale HF Evo anyone?).
That said here are a few viable alternatives:
Mitsubishi Evo VI - Lovely car but despite their superiority they just do not do it for me.
R32 GTR - I would love one of these. The Drifer image is not something I am a fan of and from waht I can see a bad one can be a royal moneypit.
996 - These are superb and do many things very very well. The water cooled part does result in plenty of snobbery and they are not the sturdiest of things sometimes, resulting in repairs that could scrap the car (scored liners ; they are Nikasil so ££££££, bushes (again ££££), and of course the rare but possible IMS issues.
E36 M3 - These are awesome and I do fancy owning one. Like my 944 Turbo the costs of what could go wrong (and more) are frightening.
The truth in alot of good 'quick' cars are on the rise. I have probably seen a number of good Porsche 944 Turbos change hands for over £10k recently ; last year this was not the case. The car market itself with the exception of the cars with seemingly evergreen stagnatation in their values seems to have increased on the older (20 years +) tin. Christ, the previous owner of my RST reckons it is worth £10k now with where it is at (and offered me a sum somewhere between what I paid for it and this) but I can't see it myself. Yes I could have got an Evo VI or a BMW Z4/'good' E36 M3 for similar money but would not have been for me, or possibly given me the enjoyement.

The same can be said of any car if it's not treated right , GTR,s don't have a drifter image where as a lesser GTS or 200sx definitely does . The he two main areas of concern on 32 gtr,s is bottom end and the gearbox synchros but if you bought one with these already done then there is nothing to worry about, that is unless you want more than 1.1 bar of boost from the std turbos because they will quickly wipe themselves out . A well sorted stage 2 gtr running 450-500 bhp with proper UK spec suspension and tyres really is a proper weapon on fast a class roads and is easily capable of sticking with and embarrassing very expensive machinery ................... As the owner of the V12 vantage that tried to bully me out the way found out , the fast Datsun didn't disappoint ?. what about a nice clean E46 M3 manual ? , just make sure the rear subframe has been checked for cracks

How about a curve ball - E55 AMG for SAVAGE power and an Imprezza for handling duties. Should get very good examples of both for 15k?

I can see where people are coming from with their suggestions, but it seems as if you have your heart se on an ESCOS so thats what I think you should get.
As long as you don't buy a complete dog you're not going to lose any money. So of you decide you don't like it you can always sell it and buy something else.
View and drive or be driven in a few and find the best you can afford!!
Alternatively buy a Sierra 4x4 estate and drop a YB in it!

Ive had a E36 M3 and as long as you stay away from the SMG gearbox there a great reliable easy to live with car. I was also looking at buying a 996 myself but after driving a convertible one it put me off altogether just didn't give the grin factor felt like I was driving just some other run of the mill car.
Are you buying a car as a weekender or will you be using it as a daily?

Are you buying a car as a weekender or will you be using it as a daily? My daily is a ford transit and always will be, i hope. It would be to use occasionally and to look at often. I'm pretty set on a escort cosworth now but am going to take my time

Talking of the Escort Cosworth, I spent an afternoon in studios of the guy (Steve Harper) who designed it the other day. Great bloke. Looking through all his design sketches and drawings was amazing, plus hearing about all the other cars he's designed. Certainly a memorable visit!

I use a van as daily and have always had a weekend toy. I was looking at sapphire cosworths the last few months but after buying one for £1700 10+ or so years go I just couldn't fork out the amount people are asking for them at the moment. In my head its still just a sierra the same I would think about escort cosworth although they do look a lot more meatier than the sapphires.
In the end my choose came down to a 996 ver or a chimaera. After driving both I decide on the chimera and that what I now have completely different to any cosworth but plenty of grunt and can be fixed with a Halfords socket set on your drive.

This is whats getting me atm people are asking 20-30k but i don't see anyone paying it, none seem to be selling over 17k that i have seen, who is dictating this market. Why cant people put their cosworths on auctions and actually see what people will offer. Good call with the TVR the ones ive heard on the road make such a rumble that it makes me weak at the knees. Quite a good call don't see many about

There's not much to add (well, RX7 FD Twin Turbo, R34GTR) but there are a couple of points that don't resonate well...
You're looking at spending £15k or more on an old car but you're worried about a tax bracket? You're considering a 20 year old turbocharged specialist performance car with unusual/unique running gear but put off alternatives by possible repair bills.
I don't think I need to comment further, I think it should be obvious why these points seem incongruent.

I don't think you needed to comment at all really, i had to read it twice to work out who you were referring to. Not bothered what incongurent means, not going to look it up as i will never use it. I generally don't buy cars after 2001 as they are taxed on their emissions and are modern make of that what you will. With regards to the repair bills I'm not sure what your getting at really, not even sure what your referring to. Thanks for the post, although i think this thread is about ready to sink into the depths of the general section, everythings already been said and i have decided that its what i want and its what i'm getting price is irrevelant.

My opinion is if you want a Escort Cosworth get one, if you have to save a bit longer and put a little more aside then surely the bigger picture is worth it? Its what i want and yes you are right - off to look at a couple this weekend so i will update if i bring one home.
