1. When (roughly) did double-DIN stereos come into use?
2. Were there ever any systems comprising 2 (or more) single-DIN units? I'm not talking about equalizers that got bolted on wherever they'd fit...

Mk4 Golfs had a Radio on top with separate CD changer underneath. Cant think of many others.

Earlier ones than these are probably 80's Japanese cars, cant remember which at the moment though
I think the Toyota Celica Supra from around 1985 did, many 80's Toyotas also did

Ford had CD players that were separately mounted under the radio/cassette head unit.
Looking at the 1986 "Ford Audio Premium Sound Systems" manual I had on my office shelf for some reason, Ford was offering a graphics equaliser and a 4 channel amp optional extras as separate DIN units at the time.

Thanks for the responses, people All the modern aftermarket double-DIN units I've seen are rather hideous, so maybe I should just keep looking for OEM stuff.
