Well, saw this one's friend on eBay and a forum member on another forum I am on bought it. He decided he wanted just the one UMM, so left me with the plan that this should be mine. Haven't even seen it yet, bought blind on the strength of three photos, and the say so of the buyer of the other UMM. What really swung it though was another acquantance getting some 1950s French rusty tin delivered next week and passing his transporter's details to me - price was reasonable so I took the plunge. In the decrepit, unknown, unloved 4x4 market, this is what £200 gets you. Last run last year, last MoT'd god knows when. Love these, I used to drive one for work now and again. I keep having a cheeky look on ebay every now and again, missed this one though, I only look once a month usually.
£200 is a bargin for any 4x4 well done

Never ever seen on of those befor. Got any info about it? made in Portugal by UMM and based on a French design that grew out of the Hotchkiss Jeep, and uses a raided Peugeout parts bin for the engine, with Jeep 4x4 gear and a unique transfer box designed by the French. It's an UMM Alter II. This is the friend of the pick up that was for sale a couple of weeks ago on the bay. Rebuilt diesel pump, but master cylinder removed and in the back - no reason other than the brand new one on it was swapped onto the other UMM. I remember them in the late 80s and 90s running round and always liked the ugly looks. It has a 2.5 Peugeot Indenor turbo engine, does about 30mpg and 85mph. |

I love it. So much potential. Looks like a series 3 LandRover whose front has melted, in a good way.
Best manufacturer name ever.
I reckon you could make something really unique out of that.

the front is like that so you can see the cliff edge at the side/front of you more easily than in a Land Rover.

From the vids I have seen on YouTube its properly capable off road. Plan is to get it running And road legal in the next month or two.
Then... Perhaps sort out the rear with a basic wild camper conversion.
While keeping the ratty agricultural look.

An umm alter! Haven't seen one in ages. I lived in a small obscure village in belgium in my childhood and our nextdoor neighbour cardealer gasstation guy was a dealer. Together with tata cars ( horrible!) Those rusted when new. Insane warranty claims! And he had a brand called yue loong feeling. Do not know if i spelled it right. Never seen one ever again. I'd love to find one. Really liking this umm. Great find. It's the kund of car that you are realy proud of and your wife hates it and tells you that with that special look. Enjoy it as much as you can this summer. Kids in the back , windows open. If it has a full flat roof, fit a long webasto sunroof from a twingo. Cheers. Bookmarked

These are really cool, I drove one twenty five years ago in Portugal. They are an interesting drive, but very capable off read and comfier than a Series 3 Land Rover. I remember being very sceptical when they made me give up the Landy, but after one trip up into the hinterland I was absolutely hooked. There was a fleet of six, if I remember correctly 2 hardbacks, 2 soft tops & and 2 flat backs with hoodsticks and canopies. I quickly adopted one of the soft tops and refused to let anyone else have it!
The engines used to be really willing and quite capable, but they needed to be in the right gear at the right time.
Have fun with it, I am sure that you will.
