Yes the bald tyres were bad but I feel that was a rather harsh punishment when he was really doing nothing wrong. Then again the driver should expect that driving something like that is going to be an goldmine for any policeman and should have expected he was going to get stopped by police.
Does make me laugh reading the comments on Daily Mail though, oh how ignorant they all are.

The only winner here is the Daily Mail who likely stole this story from another publication, didn't credit them and ramped up the wording to make a minor issue seem enormous. Why do people keep linking to Daily Mail articles? It's a trash mag and nobody but idiots take it seriously.

The bald tyres were very bald and I'm guessing that the lack of door panels means exposure to sharp edges etc, not that it's relevant but it wouldn't pass IVA like that. Does look like a typical blow it out of all proportion article though. If you're going to drive a car that looks like that you've got to expect to be pulled up and you should keep everything legal (the bodywork on my MX5 will be the last thing to get done so I expect people to assume that all of it is poorly maintained).

Isn't the law 3 points for a bald tyre? So he would have got 12 points hence the ban. Makes sense, harsh but it is the law.
edit; "Each bald or defective tyre carries a fine of up to £2,500 and three penalty points so if all four aren't up to standard you could be looking at a fine of £10,000, 12 points and an automatic ban. "

" He wasn't given FPN for bald tyres, he was prosecuted for 'dangerous driving', which presumably the Police used the bald tyres to justify. I would imagine that only the rear were shown in that news report and that the front were probably legal. The prosecution by the Police was probably exacerbated by the poor visual condition of the car, which didn't contribute to its [non] Roadworthiness, but because is didn't look like a 'normal' version of a road going vehicle they decided to make an example of him. I would suggest his lawyer was useless as anyone versed in the Legalities of motor vehicles would have had everything apart from the tyres and the handbrake struck off the charges as they do not constitute an issue under the MOT or Construction and Use Regs. IVA doesnt apply here as the modifications aren't sufficient to remove the Type Approval the vehicle already gained as stock.

Thanks for clearing that up to average kids like me haha interesting to know and can understand why the guy would be curse word. I did get the impression they were picking on him to 'make an example of him' and obviously like you say the appearance of the car probably did not help. Good Knowledge my good sir.

Got no sympathy for him. What a dick for driving around with tyres like that. Got pulled over on a coastal road in North Wales, good chance it was raining too. As for the interior, those doors will take chunks out of limbs in the advent of a big smash. If you're going to strip a car to save weight make sure all sharp edges are covered. Carbon fibre or aluminium sheet over the doors would look a lot nicer too.

Whilst your comments regarding the interior are good sense, from a legal perspective there's nothing to prevent him driving around like that, and therefore it needn't have been brought to the attention of the Courts.

Why do people keep linking to Daily Mail articles? It's a trash mag and nobody but idiots take it seriously. I'd like to agree with you but ... ![:'(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cry.png) RRG last year, I was standing next to the Dez pickup and a couple of respectable gentlemen were having a chat including "He must be an MOT tester - no way that *@%£* is ever road-worthy". If we get that at RRG, what do non-motoring folk know? ![:'(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cry.png) I was giving a lift to a nice, respectable lady last month, not happy when she said my car "couldn't be insured or MOT'd as it has lots of loose wires hanging under the dashboard and looks terrible". Her ex was a car dealer for 20 years so she knows these things - as she keeps telling me. Pics required * * Credit to DM : "The interior of the car that was built in 1936 and is still in superb working order" (apart from sharp edges, missing trim, a satnav poking out of the glovebox - and no glovebox lid ![;-|](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/squint.png) ) www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2744989/W-O-Bentley-s-Lagonda-LG45R-Rapide-racing-car-set-fetch-1-8m-auction.html ![http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2014/09/14/1410720172049_Image_galleryImage_BNPS_co_uk_01202_558833_P.JPG](http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2014/09/14/1410720172049_Image_galleryImage_BNPS_co_uk_01202_558833_P.JPG) Sun is out, time to think positive!

Its tricky one, pulling him on the look of the car is one thing and to then find bald tyres is a no no, but to mention the stretch on the tyres withing this article is a worry, regardless of peoples opinions on the stretch Tyre look, its a form of modding which is made out in that article to be illegal?
Why is quick release steering wheel bad? Why is a dented car bad? without being too OTT about this what the powers that be do is "find an extreme, shock general public / Daily Wail readers, suggest all people who drive similar modded cars are all dangerous hooligans...... then start making laws to ban stuff" Public accept it because "remember they are all bad"...
But yes this guy was extreme, problem is what if guys who are less extreme get this treatment for stretching a tyre due to this negative publicity for car modding?

nomad you raise a good point, i wonder how many folks moaning on the DAILY MAIL comments section have an old MG in the garage which they don't need to MOT and has very old cracked tyres on it and rubbish seat belts which they are about to crack out for summer with no health checks? Different for the beard scratchers though....(my dad is one BTW, before anyone gets professionally offended.)

My god there mobile site is cack. Cant be bothered to waste brain power reading the garbage. Probably written by someone that thinks once cars are 4 years old they are only fit for scrap.
All I can see are bald tyres, maybe the driver already had 6 points?

What an utter pi55take.
Daily Mail are brainless morons and probably get their stories from a rapist who works in the BBC. lol
If he had been drunk or under influence of drugs then yea, ok...but he wasnt... ok maybe the bald tyre... why are they nitpicking over everything else? -also the police seem to forget how many wires and computer devices they have in 1 patrol car... yea, thats safe.
Its a bit of a joke, not only does he get a fine , extended test he has to retake, AND a year driving ban... not to mention some rubbish on his criminal record he now has. He could lose his job for all we know, could properly f*ck up his life....people have been affected like that.
But the justice system doesnt care! haha what a Joke that is.

just to add, I'm not some jumped up tit
Had my license taken off me recently for a bald tyre that wasnt actually bald or illegal, and I'm not very happy that iv been given a £600 fine and had my license taken off me because i can re-apply for it straight away. The Justice system ? -Yeah. don't trust it if you're british.

We can all defend the guy and butter this up as much as we want but deep down we all know the car's a shed and shouldn't be on the road. He clearly knew the wheels were too wide as he's screwed on some tatty rubber/plastic arches. The Daily Mail is a rag as others have said and like the rest of the press will blow any story out of proportion to sell papers. However, the fact that he was comfortable driving on "balding" tyres means he doesn't care about his, his passengers or other road users safety so a ban is correct in my opinion. Had the tyres been the only issue and the rest of the car was in good condition then yes it would've been harsh, but the guy clearly doesn't care what he takes onto the road so deserves everything he gets. Let's just hope his stupidity and thoughtlessness doesn't set a precedent for all the conscientious drivers here. Dave Agree

. He clearly knew the wheels were too wide as he's screwed on some tatty rubber/plastic arches. . Dave What a stupid comment. Please tell me where in the Law it states this is not allowed? By putting the plastic arches on the car he was at least making sure they did protrude the bodywork...which is allowed. I suppose I am in the same boat then as I have these "Tatty Rubber/Plastic Arches" bolted to my car!
