Hi guys, I am considering using graffiti paint to rattle my daily as I am rather bored of looking at it. I have some interesting plans for it that are already underway, but I am slowed with my plans for paint. The paintwork is shot already, so I was originally going to flat it back and give it a quick blow over with some free paint I have access to. I considered wrapping it, but there are many odd shapes in the bumper which would be a pain in the ass to wrap. So currently I am thinking I might rattle it, providing it doesn't end up costing a fortune. As far as I can tell, graffiti paint goes on heavier and lasts longer than normal paint, so I shouldn't need as many coats, etc? So, anyone willing to give an estimate on how many cans I'd need to cover one of these? The bumper I'm not that keen on wrapping looks like this: This isn't meant to be an expensive exercise, it's just a way for me to not feel like killing myself every time I walk out to my daily while the Minor isn't ready yet. Cheers. To clarify further, the Astra is white, and will be ending up mostly white, or mostly matte white. So shouldn't need many coats if it's just rubbed back a bit and the paint holds well?

I'd say 10 cans would do it.

That's where I was guesstimating, as well. I know a few people have rattled a whole car on here, and in fact I remember some people have used graffiti paint, which put me on to it. But I can't remember who they were. I did try the search function, I swear! Some input from them would be great, especially as to prep. I figure it should hold ok if I just wet rub it back and wipe it down with prepwash but I could be mistaken.

Factor a can per panel for the car and then any left doubles up to evenly spray the roof and bonnet as it does go further than a can per panel. When you paint the roof the best way I got a decent finish was to jack one side of the car right up so it was an angle. Get some scotchbrite pads to prep the surface before painting and then a wipe down and you are good to go. It covers anything and stands up very well to use. Mgb is still green after about 2 years.

Ive tried a few different brands and still keep going back to Montana Black. I usually buy 10 tins for a 1 colour job, couple more if they want the shuts/engine bay doing. Only thing I've found that stains it is diesel soot.

That sounds pretty much exactly how I was thinking it would go. Now to decide whether to go matte colours or stick with gloss. I think it would be interesting to have a matte car for once so I'll probably end up going with that. Will link from here to the finished product when everything is tied together. On hold atm though as I've just bought some new noisemakers to install and that's set me back about $400, as well as rego for the half year I'm giving myself to have the Minor on the road and driveable. As for Montana paints, I don't think they're available here, and shipping paints around is a right pain in the ass. I shall try one of the local graffiti sites. Cheers guys.

I've used Montana paints to repaint my Rickman 3 times now over the years and working on 1 can per panel is spot on but I like to buy an extra 1 or 2 just in case of f*ck-ups and touch-ups and it's best to buy them all at once so they are from the same batch as I have noticed a difference in colour when buying at different times. It covers very well and lasts a long time and isn't too noxious being acrylic. Preparation each time was done with Scotchbrite pads and I have had no lifting at all and it lives outside all year round and isn't looked after at all. I used gloss but have only managed to get a satin finish at best but that suits me and the car. The 1st time. 2nd time. 3rd time. Hope this helps and if you have any questions give us a shout.

I was originally thinking one per panel would be about right, and that seems to be the consensus. Unfortunately the shipping laws in Australia are kind of curse word and it would cost me a small fortune to get paint posted anywhere. I have found a few graffiti shops in the reasonably local vicinity (read 10-15min away) so will check them out. Annoyingly they refuse to list prices online, so I might call them first. They sell Montana and also a couple of other brands which actually have colours closer to what I'm after. Cheers, Matt

Montana black cans are almost half that in price and there is plenty In the smaller cans to not worry about buying a huge tin like that. I can't say I've used kobra, so couldn't comment on its coverage, ect mind.

For the first time in my life I find myself lusting after a Rickman... *n I have the same having seen the above, had it for a while and it's now spread onto other non-descript kit cars (no offense Anglia68, you've well and truly made something bland into a standout machine) Also, HARDCORE & Colonelk have both painted cars using Montana and had good results. I plan on the same once I get some time/pull my finger out/...

To get a decent layer of paint on will cost a fortune, why not use a roller its very easy & cheap to do a nice job..... Not that keen on doing roller, tbh. If I was going to go to that effort, I'd just rub it back properly and use the free paint system I have access to. As the car won't be changing colour, I think it won't be too hard to get a good coat on it. And as for price, 10 cans of white and 5 of colours for retro stripes will set me back between 45 and 70 pound depending on brand. Which I think is quite reasonable as it'd cost more to wrap it and be waaay more effort. And on the plus side, if I need to touch it up, it'll be super easy to blow some more in.

Graffiti type paints cover extremely well so a single coat is all that's needed to cover previous paint jobs which is all that I did on my car, as seen above, even when changing from the dazzle camouflage scheme to a simpler two-tone blue and again when I then toned it down to a two-tone grey paint job and each time it only cost me just under £50 using Montana Hardcore paints so not very expensive at all for a complete change of colour.
