our gran passed away last year (in her nineties) and a small amount of money filtered down from the will. i wasnt expecting anything to be honest so it was quite a surprise. i didn't want to stash it or blow it on pointless stuff (he says, about to buy another car) so decided to look for a physical keep sake, which in my mind translated as car ! something familiar, potential to be future classic and increase in value, plus be fun to drive and have a good owners scene behind it. having owned an early land rover ninety which i sold a couple years ago i started looking at the older leaf sprung series 2a and 3. i viewed a couple and this one came up locally at a good price, so a couple weekends ago i went for a viewing and ended up buying it. its a genuine factory series 3 station wagon 2.25 petrol (verified by vin) 109,000 miles but had engine rebuild in 1998 including new valves, guides, unleaded conversion, weber 34ich carb. it had a decent respray in the noughties and a new chassis which is still in great condition, no welded repairs anywhere. its been waxoiled every few years which has kept it in good shape! the engine number comes back correct vintage 8:1 5 main bearing and the vehicle is otherwise original untouched or gracefully restored. it has fairey overdrive and freewheeling hubs which were standard extras on the station wagon. It also came with a wallet of history dating back to its purchase from dutton forshaw (oxford registered) in the history is a little note book in which the second owner started writing down servicing and purchases, then each subsequent owners have carried it on which is awesome ! even has date of purchase, price, name and address at each change of hands, amazing ! to do list: heater box is bypassed with rubber hose, replacement came with vehicle tick! sort bonnet catch as it wobbles up and down 1/4 inch tick! replace wing mirror as it has random round one the size of the top of pint glass (helpless)door glass wont slide, felt runners are swollen/jammed with mossdoor tops bow out at speed, possible replacement or fettlingroof lining is mouldyone safari vent jammed open tick! rear side window runners (bottom) are rotting/swollen with rustcross bars in rear door starting to rotrear door check strap pulled out of floor pan tick! water pump is leaking out of the drain hole tick! choke cable rusted solid internally tick! heater control cable rusted solid internally tick! indicator stalk not self cancelling tick! reverse light not working tick! awesome 80s sharp head unit not powering up biggy is the gearbox pops out of 4th occasionally, 3rd and 4th syncro are also non existent (works ok double clutching) gearbox is booked in 23rd feb to have the syncros done and whatever else crops up (seals bearings kind of thing)

There's just something utterly timeless about these wagons and this looks a beauty. I love the way it can be anyone driving them from the farm labourer to the Lord - completely classless! Had a 2A back in the day that was my only transport for around 8/9 years. Loved it and even the ex cried when it went. Definitely bookmarked.

Brilliant. Best thing to invest your inheritance in. Much better than stuffing it in a bank. I've wanted an old leaf spring Land Rover for years. Just missed a great one a couple of years ago at a bargain price. Some day. Best of luck with the gearbox rebuild. If you read Classic Land Rover or Classic and Sportscar it seems like Martin Port had similar problems with the gearbox in his Series 2a.

That really is a cracking motor and a great example of the marque...
I have ALWAYS wanted one of these and I'm hoping to get my hands on one one day!
I shall keep an eye on this one as it's exactly what I'd hunt out if I had the dosh.
Brilliant...!!!

thanks for the comments i was thinking of naming it after nan (Amy) might even go as far as sign writing it on the back, a bit like the nose art on old fighter planes/ bombers (no recumbent lady in a bikini though, that would be weird !) at the weekend i started a few of the jobs in the check list, the water pump and reinstating the heater. (new wing mirrors and indicator stalk pictured too) the parts availability for these old wagons is astonishing, equal or greater than classic mini / beetle i would say i drained the system using the plug on the bottom of the radiator, and the plug on the bottom of the block. in small quantities it had a good pink coolant mix, however by the time the trug had a few inches of liquid at the bottom it was turning very rusty. will replace it to be honest. removing the radiator fixings, had the battery out at this point too. the whole job was getting a bit "stuff in the way of other stuff i originally thought this was a drive dog for engine powered capstan winch, but i have since learned its for a starter handle ! old pump off and the timing chain cover cleaned up as much as i could in situ new pump fitted and timing chain cover dotted in with paint repainted and refitted the pump pully and fan rad refitted, hoses plumbed back in, then the fan shroud and other bits of dressing replaced also started investigating the bypassed heater matrix. blanked one outlet off and stuck a garden hose on the other, i take it this is outside of normal leak down tolerance believe it or not a heater was an optional extra on series 2 and 3! its quite a pleasingly basic system, separate two speed motor, bit of hose, then a heater matrix enclosure which blows hot air straight into passageway in the cabin. hot or cold comes via a cable operated valve on the engine block. removed the heater box from the bulkhead (orange stuff round the hole is glue for foam seal) the matrix appears to be split along the end cap, should be able to braze that back up and keep it as a spare

hole for the exhaust to exit ? The hole is for a PTO shaft, common on military and civvy versions. You can just see a corresponding hole in the next crossmember, ahead of the gearbox.

onwards with all things ethylene glycol! spruced up the replacement heater box and bunged up some of the holes with dumdum (which is a bitumen putty). i also did the garden hose leak test which came back ok, that was with about 5 bar mains pressure behind it too, the coolant system on a car is under 1bar bolted in place with new foam seal, then started plumbing it back in. also had the heater valve off to make sure its clear and free, which it is then into the cabin to see why the heater controls weren't working. when i moved the lever the outer sheath was sliding through the clamp, so i tightened the clamp but then the lever was rock solid. then i took the clamp off, released the wire core and i couldnt even shift it with pliers on the end ultimately i had to take the cable off the landy, clamp the end of the wire core in a vice and pull the sheath off. it was rusted solid so cleaned it up with wire wool soaked in oil, then it slid back through lovely while in the dash i delved into the birds nest behind the dials to fit the new lucas indicator stalk. no problems with the fitment all the wires and plugs matched, but the kink in the stalk wasnt quite right, it hit the wiper button when pushed forward to full beam so i gripped the stalk in an adjustable wrench where i wanted to bend it more, then tweaked it forward which cured that problem

bit of forward planning i found this on ebay on tuesday for 25 quid buy it now. its an oil filter adapter from a land rover 200tdi engine. despite not being invented until 1988 the block has lineage right back to the 2.25 from 1958, which means its a straight swap onto my engine. whats the point? well series and early ninety use a replaceable cartridge oil filter which is fiddly and very messy to seal up. the 200tdi adapter means i can use modern ubiquitous ERR3340 spin off oil filter fitted to every car, ever. these adapters retail between 140-200 quid so nearly had an embolism clicking the button so fast. as its from a later engine it will need the oil cooler unions taken off, so a random collection of BSP and unf blanking plugs are on order. one of them is a jaguar E type sump plug, oooooh !

Lovely looking Series, I've had two over the years, A Series 2A that eneded up with a Ford Essex engine and a Series 3 that ended up as a soft-top V8. Still miss them both. That's a lovely clean looking example and the chassis looks amazing! Hope you get as much enjoyment out of yours as I did from mine

did a bit of pottering today, had a look at the rear door check strap which had stress fractured and pulled a disk of alloy out of the floor pan. i decided to use a new M8 bolt from underneath, two penny washers and some disks of damp proof course to keep the steel~alloy separate bolt inserted from underneath and a nut wound down tight on it, a small washer, the check strap, another washer, then nyloc on top  also had a quick delve into my favourite thing, ever, old car electrics. first is the non functioning reverse light which i am genuinely missing. i popped the lens off to see if the bulb had blown, erm yeah kinda ! oddly the bulb still had continuity but when i hooked it up to spare car battery it lit up then went cloudy like a storm rolling in. think the glass is cracked and leaking argon next popped it in reverse to see if i had 12v at the terminals, nope. then started flipping the mystery switches on the dash and got 12volts from the one arrowed below ! i also got 0.4 volts with it in the off position which cant be right  maybe the switch has carked it internally. with ignition off i still get 0.4 volts, but pull the switch to the on position it goes to zero volts. bizarre. think its something to do with the fact its illuminated (the white portion in the middle of switch should glow in the on position) then i temporarily wired in a new bulb to prove the switch. i'll need to buy a new reverse light though as its already had an araldite repair, one terminal snapped off due to that, and now the melted holder next job was to investigate why my bangin ICE install was no longer dropping thick beats. it will be my lifes work to get this thing working, but i swear to god if it chews up my one and only cassette (thriller) like my old landy did when i had two cassettes (scorpions greatest hits and thriller) there is gonna be violence of geological proportions might be this lot to blame, worlds longest chain of random wires and choc blocks ? eventually worked out that there are two 12v feeds (hence the two fuses above) one is switched, the earth is a spade on the actual metal casing. the head unit woke up once i wired it in, but no dice from the speakers. i traced the wires and they have been cut in 4 difference places. plus i found 4 or 5 other random bits of wire doing nothing (one of which was live 12v and pinched/ cut off under the windscreen frame trims  ) heres the random dashboard finds. a lolly stick, £2.20, a rancid foam ear plug, a national pest technicians association pin badge, some shells, two lengths of speaker cable with plugs, a piece of ply wood painted stripy black

All good stuff, but has it got that most essential,if not compulsory addition of the legendary LRS?
To those who who do not know of such things, all Land Rovers of a certain age are legally required to contain at least one LRS. ( Those In the Land Rover 'brotherhood' of course know this, and will be nodding thier heads wisely, knowing ownership of an LRS is proud and honourable thing)
I am of course speaking of the one thing that immedialetly separates the men from the boys ...
.....The Land Rover Spider!
