Both heavier than the K series and not that much more powerful considering you can turbo a k series.
How's about a vag 20v turbo? Can fit one in a metro so will fit in a maxi.

This should make it Choo Choo! A bit of measuring up for roll cage today, working out how the heater and dash will fit.

The sun has been out this weekend so got a few more hours in. Cut back and rewelded the lower subframe mounts so the Metro Gti arb now clears, planning on reinforcing them further later and also adjusting the bar slightly with some oxy heat. Found a plastic alternator cover from an MG TF, nice Started on new inner wings, i want to be able to lift the whole engine and box in and out with minimal fuss. Gear linkage is almost there just needs a little mod to clear the arb then it can be blasted and welded properly. Front strut brace looks like a easy job, will be bolt in and join up with the old upper engine mounts on the inner wings / old towers. Nice bit of old crash damage, explains why the front end looks a little drunk even though the frame is perfectly square to the car. Rad is half mounted, Allegro top mounts fit the MGF rad perfect

Well I now have a working gear linkage, very direct too. Also the exhaust is all mocked up, just need to get it tacked together then mig welded as I made it from hacking up an mgf stainless exhaust. Also have to relocate the front hanger and weld that onto the subframe. Yesterday I had a bit of time so got a bit further making the inner wheel arches look tidy after attacking the sound proofing with a fire extinguisher. Have now got a complete set of non dented, rust free doors, the rear two are in the shed. I mounted the drivers seat on some wood to try and check the height and door bar fitment. Actually sat in the car for the first time in over a year yesterday, felt good even though the steering column is too high and seat was a bit loose! Also mocked up the roll cage in card tube, its still going to be a pain to measure properly!

Cheers Just making it up as I go along I bet there will be 100s of niggles to sort out down the road. It started out as a simple engine swap idea and it's a total car rebuild pretty much. That card is all 44mm but think I might go for 38mm cds tube for a little more room and less weight, still msa spec mind. There doors are much better got all 4 now.

love it !
on allot of FIA spec cages the main roll hoop (one up behind driver round the B pillars) will be 50mm, and possibly its 2 main legs to the rear wheel tubs. then the rest in 40, including diagonals and door bars

Yeah I was thinking something like make the main hoop larger and the A pillar bars smaller diameter, especially the bar across the top of the windscreen. I think the lowest fia spec diameter is 32mm.
I'm not planning on building the car to blue book spec or anything but might as well do it properly, it certainly won't be an adjustable show cage!
I don't mind shiney bits but if they don't have a practical use they go in the bin!

This is great. Seems a shame to trash the cardboard cage, there's some time in there!

One thing that I thought when looking at the mocked up cage was whether it would be very easy to fit a windscreen if the tubes were very close to the pillars.

smart money would be sending offshoots form the A pillar through the fire wall to from suspension turrets

Thought about it, but my suspension turrets are on the subframe rather than on the car. I have added the extra bar that goes from the bottom of the A pillar posts forwards round the where the front of the tunnel meets the bulkhead - that should keep the engine and subframe in the front Planning on making it bolt in, the rear frame will be 44mm tube and the front 38mm tube. The door bars will be bolt in and the front section of the cage will bolt to the rear half cage so no cutting holes in the floors, will be much easier to paint out of the car and will come out if the windscreen ever needs changing

oh, does the subframe not bolt into the turrets, but just sort of silhouette inside them ?

The whole Metro/MGF subframe carries all suspension mounts on itself as well as engine mounts; nice compact design and easy to remove in one lump.

That's right I'm using an MG TF subframe so it has built in turrets, everything is one nice package. As long as it's bolted onto the car straight at the correct height for the steering then its all good. It's bolted to the car with 4 big bolts through mounts welded onto the chassis rails, 4 more bolts through tabs welded onto the back of the turrets, 2 bolts into the front panel. I'm also going to have a front strut brace bolted between the turrets on the subframe - this will extend up to the tops of the original turrets on the inner wings, where the original engine steadies were mounted. I'm hoping 12 mounting bolts on 6 points will do it, the mgf only has 10 smaller bolts at 4 points
