Err I change cars very rarely as it's a PITA so I spend long time thinking about what next - even longer trying to find a nice example and then finally I have what I was after....... Normally this is not a replacement but an addition!!!
I'd struggle with 1 car per 12 Mths
Bookmarked as it'll probably show me exactly why I don't change cars often

Will be keeping an eye on this as well, sounds a really interesting idea, from somebody who is constantly changing cars perspective anyway!
Somebody mentioned Swapz before and I recommend trying that when looking for a replacement too. At the back end of 2012 I did quite a few swaps on there and went from a clapped out T reg Vectra worth about £400 to a 54 reg Fiesta for absolutely nothing! Gave it away to a family member in the end instead or raking the massive profit mind.

Bookmarked ..i'm guessing that you're going to put them on the market as soon as you get it so as to be assured that its gone come months end? Hopefully all this effort will show your mate that a cool car is very much a realistic reality.

Normally this is not a replacement but an addition!!! I'd struggle with 1 car per 12 Mths Bookmarked as it'll probably show me exactly why I don't change cars often I do know what you mean fella, i've got a few cars in my collection, that i've thought long and hard about owning before going out and finding one, and a couple i'll probably never sell. I still own my first car! But this isn't about that, this is about experiencing different cars, and seeing what they're like, and just having some fun, and if nothing else, to make some hopefully interesting reading. Even if i fail, and it all goes pear shaped, well atleast i've had a go, and got a story to tell about my stupidity that we can all laugh about. But if it goes well, hopefully my mate will keep his word, and go buy something cool and retro! But if it does all go wrong, or i do it wrong and it doesn't work, hopefully anyone else who's going to try something ridiculous like this will be able to learn from where i went wrong... I won't be completely useless, i can be used as a bad example! I decided to do this a couple of years ago, currently in the second year of doing it and i now own 24 cars!!! I like your style buddy, but i don't want to end up keeping them all, i've got thirteen already and that's more than enough! Bookmarked ..i'm guessing that you're going to put them on the market as soon as you get it so as to be assured that its gone come months end? Hopefully all this effort will show your mate that a cool car is very much a realistic reality. I plan to put them up for grabs toward the middle of the following month, for example Januarys car, the Frontera, was bought in January, but not really used until February. Februarys car has been bought, but won't get used until March, so on, and so fourth. This will give the DVLA time to get the documents back to me hopefully, as i can't really put them up for grabs until the documents arrive. Incidentally, if anyone see's something i buy that they would like in their collection, please do feel free to let me know.

Great idea, I bought and sold 17 cars last year. Here they make you buy a dealers license at 7 cars per year; luckily they haven't sent me a letter just yet. Sold two this year and have refrained from purchasing any...

Sorry to be a Party pooper. Great idea in theory but what if you end up with a car that takes ages to sell ?, from what i can see at the moment hardly anything is shifting (even at the cheap end of the market), and 4x4's are far easier to sell with snow and ice on the ground, we will be in Spring soon. Also will end up costing a fair old chunk of money in insurance and tax with transfer fees, buying and selling in the middle of the month (which i agree is an absolute rip off). Thats ok, I think you're probably being very realistic. I'm hoping that as the cars i'm planning to buy are at the cheaper end of the spectrum i will be able to sell them on again quite easiliy, and hopefully get my money back, i've got my fingers crossed anyway! But thats sort of the point of an experiment, to see if it can be done! Hopefully it can, as i've got nowhere to store any more cars! I think another problem will eb getting the dopcuments back from the DVLA quick enough to sell the cars on again after my month of ownership is up! As for insurance, this might be a problem, but i sold the sacrificial family car a while back and i was paying £890 a year on that fully comp, the Frontera is costing me £220 a year fully comp, plus £25 admin fees for swapping my vehicle, so maybe even with the transfer fees my insurance might (hopefully) be cheaper this year than it was for me last year. [quote might be a plan to give your location Good thinking buddy, i've updated the initial start to this thread, i am in Hampshire, and to be more precise, i'm in Winchester, in Hampshire. No then, as we're halfway through the month it's time to start thinking about putting this Frontera up for sale. But before i do, i figured that i was going to want some half way decent photos of it for my own records for want of a better word, so yesterday in between dodging the rain i managed to wash, polish, then find a place to try and take some photos of it, by the way, i'm not much of a photographer, but i try the best i can, anyway here they are... My favourite one of the photos i took... Although, i quite like this one too I'm quite happy with how they turned out, and as you can see, it scrubs up pretty nice too! So, without further a do, here's a link to my ad in the for sale section:- retrorides.proboards.com/thread/175841/1997-vauxhall-frontera-580-winchester

Bookmarked great idea too, makes a bit of fun out of motoring. There is no law to say how many cars you own or how many times you change your car, only problem is insurance companies do not like you changing to often or they try and declare you a motor trader, maybe a cheap road risk policy will be worth getting, you can jump in and drive what you like then Plus with a road risk policy you can buy the cars on the yellow slip thus making the v5 yours to sell on with no waiting.

Please forgive my ignorance, but what's a road risk policy? What kind of cover do you get with that? I looked into getting a traders policy, but I was told by several different insurance companies that you can only have a traders policy if your main source of income is related to car sales, or testing. Is this not right? Obviously I just have a regular job, so I didn't take it any further and took them at their word.

I see, thanks hamps, i'll look into it. Ok then, one down, eleven to go! I hate selling cars, the whole idea of it fills me with dread! And after my last car selling incident, i really wasn't looking forward to selling this one. However it needs to go, because i'm pretty much completely out of storage space, even taking up my parents drive, and my brothers front lawn! I have a drive of my own too, but crazily its too narrow to fit a car on, although i did once own a Mini, and that fitted on it... Just! So, i decided to put an ad on Gumtree for the Frontera, and included a small selection of photos, nothing fancy, just this sort of thing. I didn't really want to list it on the bay of E, mainly because of the messers who infest it, and make sellers lives a misery buy winning things, then not turning up to collect them. I'd never tried Gumtree before, so i thought i'd give it a shot. I thought that as my original purchase price was £580, i would put it up for £650 to leave room for haggling. Withing five minutes of listing it, i had already had a couple of texts from people offering me a hundred quid, and they would pick it up tonight! Er, yeah, right-o then, come and get it... NOT!! I honestly don't understand these people, and i genuinely believe that if i had said, ok to them, i would've never heard from them again! The other thing is, all these texts were in text-speak, which i hate, honestly, why write "100kwid m8 n il pik t up 2nite" I despise text speak, i look at it as mindless babble from an under-educated zombie nation! Anyway, i thought i'd better respond as i think its both bad manners, and bad form not to, so i just said "no" and never heard from them again. I think that in my next ad for the next car i will stipulate that i will only answer phonecalls, as i think this will deter the non-serious people. Eventually, after my ad had been up there for three days i did get a phone call from a chap who wanted to come and have a look at it in four days time. I said that would be ok, but in the back of my mind i thought this was going nowhere, as who wants to come four days after making contact? However, four days later the fella arrived with his mate, and gave the Frontera a look over. The good news is that it was just what he was looking for, and he liked it. Then the inevitable haggling, i had it advertised for £650, and he wanted to pay £500. Fair enough, but that puts me out of pocket to the tune of £80, eventaully we settled on £550, and he was off down the road. Now, unfortunately this did make me out of pocket by £30, which is irritating, but as with all hobbies, they do all cost money. Besides, a lot of my friends have a hobby called smoking, which i do not parttake in. But the average price of a pack of smokes is apparently £8.47, most of my friends who do smoke, smoke between 20 and 40 a day, so if we say the average is to smoke 30 a day, that costs them £12.70 a day, or £88.90 a week!! So i can justify my £30 loss to myself by saying to myself that if i was a smoker, i would have lost another £58.90 a week smoking! Incidentally, if you are a smoker who enjoys on average 30 smokes a day, it's costing you about £4622.80 a year, that would be a pretty cool ride in your drive instead, something to think about!! Anyway i'm rambling, so i'll get back to the point, what was it like owning a Vauxhall Frontera? Well, it was pretty good actually. Starting with the looks of the thing, i think they look pretty cool, i like the chunky looks of it, i realise that it was a bit scruffy around the edges, and had the odd rust blister but to be honest, every time i looked at it i felt happy about it, i even liked that it has a black bonnet. Inside the car was a pretty nice place to be, although the drivers seat needed attention it wasn't uncomfortable. The dashboard was clean and uncluttered, and everything worked. The only thing that did niggle me a bit was that the switches for the electric windows were down by the handbrake, what idiot decided that was a good place to put them? Why not put them on the door? Mind you, thats all i really had to moan about! In the back the kids had acres of room! Infact, we've had a couple of so called BIG American cars in the past, and even a fairly big Dodge pick up, but this little Frontera is the first car we've had where the kids can't kick me in the back while we're driving along. This feature i liked, a lot! The boot could've been bigger, but then ofcourse i've be getting kicked in the back by the kids, so i can live with a small boot lol! The engine, this was a 2.0 litre petrol engine, which was ok, it had plenty of power, even enough to get a bit of a drift going on a piece of private road! For what most of these soft-roaders are used for the 2.0 litre engine was perfect. I must admit, i did try it off road, in typical city 4x4 ownership style i parked on the grass verge outside my folks house, and it was ideal for that, i didn't even have to put it in four wheel drive or anything! When i picked up the Frontera its odometer read 139590, and when it left me for pastures new it's odometer read 139978 meaning that in my month of ownership i managed to travel 388 miles. This cost me £100 in petrol which amounted to 93.56 litres, or in English, 20.58 Gallons. This means that on average i was getting 18.85 mpg!! Not the best mpg figure i've ever seen, and according to Parkers website i should've been getting about 23 mpg from a 2.0 liter injected Frontera Sport, but heck, it's an old car, it's been a long way, and most of my driving with it was on the school run, and around town, and thats never great for your mpg! To conclude i can say that i really enjoyed my time with my Frontera, the drive was a bit bouncy and choppy due to its short wheelbase, and high centre of gravity, but driving it put a smile on my face every time, and i always felt like i was driving a full scale version of Tamiyas Wild Willys! I know they look nothing alike, but thats how i felt! Yes it was a bit thirsty, and yes it wasn't as good off road as my old Range Rover was, but thats not what these cars are about, and i think if it had a big set of knobbly tyres, and not fat road tyres it would've been better off road, but most people who own this type of car never go near anything more off road that parking on a verge! Would i have another one? Yes i would, but maybe the next one should have a bigger engine, and maybe a bit of a lift, and some big knobbly tyres! Having said that, it would probably be as cool to go the other way, big engine, slam it on the ground, and add some big rims with faaaaaaaaat low profile rubber, i reckon that would look pretty damn awesome, and with the Fronteras small square footprint with a wheel at each corner it would probably handle quite well too! So, onwards and upwards... NEXT!!!!

Well done on the sale. I know what you mean with the text speak. Just don't get it myself and as for the give you £xxx in the morning I don't even reply anymore. Selling cars can be a real pain and even though I like a good haggle I've lost interest in chopping and changing cars regularly. Too much hassle.

With the sucsessful, and surprisingly quick sale of the Frontera, it was time to purchase Februarys car, so without further ado, here it is... FEBRUARY. A 1997 Rover 416 Tourer. Mileage 102946. Awesome!! I wasn't really looking for one of these, i was actually looking for a Rover 200 series two-door hatchback, but during my search this little beauty turned up, and the more i looked at it, the better it looked to me! Plus i couldn't remember the last time i saw one, a quick look on www.weloveanycar.com/carcountuk shows that there are just 296 left on the road in the UK, so i thought i'd have a go! I remember years ago discussing with a friend of mine the possibility of getting one, and making it a two-door estate by using various parts from two door hatchback, and cobbling it all together to build a 'phantom' estate, er sorry, Tourer body. To be fair, if i had the talent, id probably still like to build this, but not from this particular car, it's just too nice! So, i arranged with the seller a suitable day to pick it up, then it was on the phone to my insurance company to change my vehicle, now when i originally put this thread up saying what i was planning/hoping to do darrylwebb said... Brilliant idea. Tax and insurance will be a right pain in the admin. And i agree with this, i just didn't think it would become a pain in the admin so soon! So, after phoning my insurance comapny who i've been with for absolutely years with no trouble, and who have given me very good service, i was talking to a young lady who i had told that i had changed my car, thats ok she said, and started to take down the details of the Rover. Then for whatever reason i got cut-off. No matter, i called them right back up. This time i got a young fella, so i told him that i was halfway through changing my car when i got cut off, so he took my details then we carried on. Then he said to me that i had only changed the insurance to the Frontera a month ago. I said, yes, but i got bored of it, so i sold it to try something else. So he then said that i can't just go about changing my car every month, it's not allowed, it's illegal!! I told him not to be such a nincompoop, it's not illegal, i have bought this Rover, it's in my name, it's my car! So then he told me that insurance companies don't like people to keep changing their cars. So i said, why not? If i change my car, it costs me money in paperwork fees, so really they win! He then told me that i've got to keep this car for a long time before i change it, or my insurance will be void! Honestly, this guy sounded like he was only about twelve years old, perhaps it was his first day on the job or something... What a dipstick! Still, i guess well see next month when i'm trying to change cars again! I have a feeling that i'll be trying a different approach to insuring my vehicles, something like hamps suggested earlier... There is no law to say how many cars you own or how many times you change your car, only problem is insurance companies do not like you changing to often or they try and declare you a motor trader, maybe a cheap road risk policy will be worth getting, you can jump in and drive what you like then I've had a bit of a look into this, and i've had some very reasonable qoutes for insurance as a part time dealer, with a fully comprehensive cover, in all fairness the qoutes i've had were still cheaper than it cost me to insure my Ford Ranger fully comp, so i'm guessing that this will probably be the way forward for this little experiment! Meanwhile, back at the plot which should be more about cars than it is about insurance companies who cover them. Here's the first fill up shot! Luckily for me, that although this too had no fuel in it, the petrol station was just half a mile from the sellers house, and, even more luckily was open! The thing that struck me about this Gulf petrol station was that it seemed a bit out of carachter for a Gulf petrol station to have attached to it a showroom selling some pretty cool cars, (I've always felt that Gulf, Murco, Jet, etc are like white label basics goods at the supermarket!) if you look in the background you can see Ferrari 355 (i think, i'm not really up on Ferraris) There was also a Maserati Biturbo, several Lotus's (Lotii?) A couple of early eighties Mercedes coupes, and a lovely early Renault Alpine, all were in spanking order! By the way, just out of interest, while i'm thinking about the fuel stop, and pickiing up a car for the first time, when you sell a car, how much fuel do you leave in the tank, becuase this is the second car i've bought this year thats been empty when i picked it up! I always try to leave about a 1/4 of a tank for the new owner, am i being too generous? So, first impressions... Well, it's nice, actually it's very nice! In total it has cost me just £552.00, which to be honest for this car is a bit of a bargain, it's MOTd until January 2016, and has clearly been loved and looked after since new! The only thing about it i don't like are those bin-lids on the wheels! I'm not a fan of aftermarket wheel trims, they always look so cheap and nasty to me. So i thought that i'd try and track down some OEM Rover wheel trims, crikey people want some proper money for those, no wonder it's wearing these hideous things! However i did manage to find a set of alloys for a Rover 25 which were a good price, and they could be picked up en-route to collecting the Rover... Nearly! From my house i was going to need to travel up the M3 to the M25, then drive round the M25 in a clockwise direction to almost exactly opposite to where i joined it from the M3. Oooorrrrr, i could join the M25, go anti-clockwise, and pick up a set of alloys on the way. I chose option two even though this added 27 miles to my trip. Anyhoo, incase you're interested a complete lap of 'Der Löndonring' is about 117 miles long, and excluding the parts where i was not on it due to picking up wheels, or the car itself, the complete lap took me about 2 hours and 2 minutes, it was pretty clear early on Sunday morning, but i think thats still only averaging about 57mph? Thats not such a bad time i don't think, although there was one alarming sign that read, CAUTION ONCOMING VEHICLE!! I looked at my brother who was driving me there, and said i didn't like the sound of that! He said, no, me neither, get your camera ready!! We never did see it though lol! To Be Continued...
