Reading through a few threads I notice that quite a few R-Rers tend to stick to the same marque, there's people who have had Skodas for 17 years, people who tinker exclusively with Dolomites, people who have had Marinas since 1984 and people who have three Nissan Cherry Turbos, for example. Personally, I've never been able to limit myself to one type of car, I was in the Triumpph Sports Six Club for a few years, and have a soft spot for some previous cars which means I'd gladly have another but in the end I just can't resist something new. Are you a one-marque (or one nation/era) person? If so, what would tempt you outside of that comfort zone...any of you Imp boys tempted by a Volvo? Mini fans secretly hankering after a Cortina?

At 19 ive had 2 Imps so far, very nearly could have had 4, great fan of the Imp Club ltd etc and I count myself as a bit of an Imp fanatic I suppose.
Have I been tempted by other retro tat.... lets see:
Currently on the 'want' list.
mk1 Cavalier GLS coupe, Sunbeam Rapier, Chevette, mk3/5 Cortina GXL/Ghia, Trabant, Lada 1600, mk1 Fiesta, Volvo 240 saloon, Reliant Regal, Sunbeam Alpine, MGB, Clan Crusader, Morris 1800.
and I'm sure there are other I cant think of right now. Had a very itchy finger on ebay for all of the above at one time or another. ;D

I like old school mechanicals. not too old school though. I am comfortable with stuff from the 50s through early 80s. I am less comfortable with FWD because I haveb't worked on much transverse stuff, well, not in any detail. I like a carb fed n/a petrol engine with a box bolted behind it (manual or auto) and a prop to a live rear axle.
My most comfy cars are Morris Minors, Ford Cortinas (Mk3 and later), Capris, Vauxhall FD Victor & Venotra, and 60s yanks. I've owned a lot of these. I would also be happy tinkering with Marinas, Hunters, Avengers, Minxes, Crestas, Escorts etc and I have done so on mates cars and the like
I "ooooof" j-tin but have not owned any J-tin older than like a '92 daily driver - it seems part of a scene I don;t know so well so on a coupe of occasions I have held back rather than dived in.
Anything with EFI and I start to glaze over, multi link IRS and the like I also start making my excuses.
I like the real vintage stuff but I know people who onw the stuff and boy is it another world to work on. FUn I guess to learn it all but again, I haven't yet and its a new skill (and a new set of spanners for all those Whitworth bolts)

admitedly ive had a lot of imps (but no where near as many as some) i have owned quite some varied retro tin over theyears,i've done the volvo thing, the 340 i had was probably the worst handling car i ever had.however i do hanker after a nice mk1 cortina or rapier possibly even a mk3 corty would be nice. at the mo' its a no go so i stick with my imp,i may just win the lottery so watch this space.

I've had
FF in the form of 2 minis, a clio and a fiesta FR in the form of 2 capris, a datsun 280zx and a Starion MR in the form of a MK1 Toyota MR2 4X4 in the form of a bobtail rangie
So I've tried several combos of layout, drive, nationality, and era from mid 70's to mid nineties.
I think a 60's Cuda and ferrari and 70's BMW would finish me off nicely ;D
I've preferred working with carbs to EFI just cos I can understand it and see it working. That said, the engine swap on my MR2 wasnt so bad.

my primary interest lies with skodas.
but, i've owned: 95 peugeot, 03 seat, 92 rover, 90 bmw, 87 rapid, 87 estelle
and own: 30 austin, 85-89 estelles, 87-89 rapids, 92-95 favorits, 93 bmw, 97 felicia
and could i find them, a large list of j/US/italy tin is just waiting to be bought, but at 21 I'm doing all right and keeping it fairly open, with different era's but all the same continent so far...
...although i will admit I'm in my comfort zone when working on a RWD skoda, the bm's 6 scares me just looking at it...

Whilst I've owned nothing but Dollys ( ) I do yearn to buy something else....I mean, when it came down to it at the end of the day I always wanted a V8 Sprint, so usually, whatever I bought was a step towards that - got there in the end. Each time I've bought another one as well, it's been by conicidence that something local, or extremely cheap (or desireable) has sprung up and I've fallen into the "Yup, gotta have that" pit. Hell, the amount of times I've -nearly- bought an XJS, 325i, 318iS, AE82, 190E, 200SX........Almost gotten there! I think what puts me off is I actually get in one and think "Well, this is pretty (insert dull/not as comfortable/not as fun/bland/unexciting/expensive for what it is)." Eventually I'll find something that doesn't have that effect on me and we'll be on the move! Like a BMW E21 323! Yes! I'd have one of those! ;D Or an Alfa 164, in black, with a sports kit, lowered, on graphite alloys. Yes! I have interest in all, yet only desire to own certain ones Still working towards that De Tomaso Pantera ;D - although I'd quite like to own a few big yanks I do try to drive as much as I can (other cars) to expand my views and experience though, otherwise, what'd be the point! You'd miss so much good stuff

I've never thought of myself as one mark man - I've had all sorts - from the ubiquitous MGB ( both varieties ) through to an XJS and an austin7 chassis I wanted to make into a special...... It just happens that at the moment I've got 4 Triumphs, but I have kept the Alfa GTV and have the DS resto ongoing. The want list has just had an Ro80 added - so longer every day! Thanks you lot - nah not really ;D ;D ;D ;D

I love old VW's cos I break em a lot less than I do Vauxhalls, Fords, Toyotas, Pugs and other assorted cars I've had over the years So to me, they "work" I also know where to go for spares, what fits what etc, cos I've taken the time to learn about my chosen marque. But I like learning .

I'm comfortable with Mercs because I've done the most spannering on them, but I've only ever owned one. I've had loads of different marques and wouldn't call myself brand-loyal at all. The only thing that would take me out of my comfort zone would be some Brit tin - all those BSF / AF / Whit bolts... like AK says, it would require a new tool set! I'd still have one though.

I've been a huge Mini fan for about 15 years and mainly thanks to this forum I've tried some different marques. I now find that after trying a big Merc a Fiat and a Avenger Tiger I want to go back to Minis again. I definatley approach spannering a new (to me) car with a good dose of fear.

I love many makes of car, all my cars were by chance! I just happened to drop on each one at the right time. Due to the obscurity of the more odd Daihatsu cars, you can't just say to yourself "I want [model]" and go look at a load of them, you have to just wait and see what turns up for sale. One week might bring a fairly rare Cuore TR-XX Avanzato R4 in good condition, the next might bring a super rare Charade Turbo Cabriolet in need of repairs, etc. Due to funds I have missed out on a lot of nice cars (Charade Turbo Cabriolet, Storia X4, Charmant LGX) and if I want any of them I'll just have to keep my eyes open and wait for the next to come along.
I'm intending to get a non-Daihatsu for my next daily driver, though it probably will be 80s J-tin just because I'm a bit more familiar with what's available. Though if a nice Cortina went by at the right time, I would quite happily buy it!

I've had 2CVs for 12 years now but in that time I've also had a Skoda Estelle, Rover P6B, various Austins (Metro, Mini, Maestro) and some modern bland-mobiles.
But 2CVGB is the only club of which I am a member and I only tend to do 2CV events (although will definitely be doing some Retro stuff this year) as there simply isn't enough time in the year to fit anymore club stuff in.
Sticking to one marque can be dangerous - people can start blindly going on about how their car is the best and that all others are rubbish. But how do you know if you don't try anything else?
Not saying that there is anyone like that on here by the way - love the fact that everyone seems so open to everything, even if they do own only one marque.

Well my first car was a triumph spitfire, I wasn’t looking for one in particular, I just saw it for sale next door to a relative’s house so I bought it, and so I stayed with different triumphs for the next 10 years on and off, the next 4 years I had allsorts, then 6 years ago I bought the Amazon ( longest I have ever kept a car ) and yes I'm hooked on it, this ones for life, but I have still had some others for short periods of time as I like to try something different, and this site has sure has opened my eyes to some cars i would have not looked twice at before.

I am a ford man personally, however that does not mean I would not buy other marques (after all my last car was a Volvo 480 Turbo, and I would love to own a ae86 corolla or xjs coupe). But at the end of the day old fords have something that appeals to. Guess its what I know after all my first reliable car was my XR2 (never let me down) and since then i have owned 2 x mk4 XR3i, a XR4i and now a GLS sierra. And they all have be reliable and easy to fix IMO.

When I first moved away from Benzes to Hondas and Datsuns it was a really steep learning curve. And there's something rather unsetttling about opening the bonnet for the first time and not knowing where everything is in a glance.
And then there's the troubleshooting - based on all the foibles of Mercs, it's easy to pinpoint a problem. But with the Honda and Cherry/Laurel it seemed more alien and required loads more research.
I'm pretty loyal to MB's but only because they're the first cars I've ever spannered in earnest on.

I love all sorts of cars, but I tend to own mostly Sierras. Mainly because I've got a good stock of parts, and I'm no mechanic - and the knowledge I've built up over ten years or so was mostly learned from Sierras! I am permanently skint, so having something I can understand and fix myself is a huge bonus.
Once the 3-door is restored (only minor bodywork to do) and my new daily driver is built (ETA: summer 2008) I'll have a Mondeo-sized gap and a re-think...

I think I could be regarded as a one-nation person, with various ownership of Datsun/Nissan, Toyota, Mazda, Honda and now Mitsubishi under my belt. Still got Subaru, Isuzu, Daihatsu and Suzuki to tick off. Remember I did have a Manta A many years ago, my first proper retro car, which followed a dire Clubman estate.
My reasons for this are varied, kind of a vicious circle really. Buy one, hear about another, get one for spares, then buy another as I’ve already got the spares, get to know people, save some rarity, etc etc. Japanese stuff suits me as an ownership proposition on limited finances as it doesn’t go wrong too often and until recently it’s been massively overlooked. I know I can run them pretty cheaply with the contacts I’ve made, parts interchangeability and so on.
But, I do hanker for other stuff. Still deeply regret not buying either of a couple of Manta B’s for sale three or so years ago. Manta A still on the list as are most early 70’s Opels, then there’s Avenger, Cortina Mk3, Victor FD/FE, almost anything really from that era. In the near future I’d like some 60’s grey porridge for country lane trundling and shows with the family. A bit further ahead, I’d also like some random full-size American coupe or hardtop sedan, not a true muscle car but something really long, low and elegant from 1967/68 or a kitsch mid-70’s barge.
