Destined for the scrapper was this 1 of 2 1990 Exceed model paj! Now to me this is the definitive Pajero, Gold 2 tone, wide arches, Brown interior and lashings of chrome, 80's coolness! Fired up after a few turns and a couple of fresh batteries, everything and I mean everything works - even the heated seats!! Anyway made the 10 mile journey back to my workshop without hassle thankfully It was a bit minging, moss everywhere etc... OOOH some much browness    And after a couple of washes... And that's as far as I got today as the other motors in my shop needed attending to. Carpets out for a clean, interior detail happening on Monday hopefully along with a full service etc. Remember I said it supposedly needed welding up? Well apart from a bit of surface rust the chassis looks like this, and this is the worst section... Inner wheel arches? Well... So no, it doesn't appear to need anything welding wise! Seems a very good truck, a bit slow but it's 25yr old tech, but a fettle on the pump and spacing the actuator might help it a bit. Anyway, feeling pretty pleased with my effort today, not the usual thing I keep in as you can probably tell but this motor is epic cool

It's awful how many perfectly usable cars get scrapped. Good on you for saving it! My mother had one of these when I was a kid, so I really like them.

Good save, can't remember the last time I saw one, let alone in the goldish paint scheme with the mega brown interior!

Very well done, Sir!
I own two on these Pajero Mk I so I know how fantastic they are.
Great save, looking forward to seeing some updates.

P.S.: If you´l like to break it, I could use some parts... ;-)

I'd rather loose by a mile cause I built my own car than win by an inch because someone else built it for me. Your car is your story, so don't let anyone else write the book.

I'm quite shocked at how good it is underneath. I looked a 2002 3.2 Shogun and the sills where they met the wheel arches were rotten, and they're prone to it apparently.
And as for disco TD5 chassis....
I'm picking up the second one next week, it's exactly the same except the chassis been welded in various places, the rear is going rotten and it hasn't run for a fair few years but it could be saved or it's a parts car as it's complete. I will be selling the second one so if your interested pm me...

Good save, far from scrapyard fodder, odd ones crop up on E-bay etc seem to hold value better than mk2's.
I've a SWB 2.5Tdi manual, same year but an import. Guy on next street has a G plate LWB in white with gold sidestripe.....
Not the quickest of things compared to modern equivalent, but draws attention non the less. (That could be something to do with the approaching tyre noise from the recip mud tyres tho,or amazement it hasn't rusted away years ago)

Amazing how good the paint work looks with a few washes. What's wrong with people letting a car get into such a sorry state??? Absolutely loved my Mk1. Only sold it to fund house purchase around 8 years ago now. Had the bouncy drivers seat in mine. I think all 4x4s should have them!

I set about the underside of the truck to see if any pox has set in, and at some point it has been undersealed and the rear end of the truck is starting to go flakey from where the underseal has gone. Thankfully it was just flakey so a couple of hours with a wire brush soon sorted this out, and i'm very pleased to report it's solid as a rock under there - in fact it's better than a lot of MK3's I've seen and had through the door here! So we set about working on it: O./S/R wheel arch: N/S/R wheel arch: Rear cross member section: Rest of the chassis, absolutely solid: This truck wants to live!! Rear foglight didn't seem to work, turns out it was a loose bulb!  All the droplinks up front are new, so no issues there, so with some spray grease I set about coating the brake lines which still look reasonably fresh too. While I was under there, Adam (my business partner) went about cleaning the minging smelly interior, the results: Don't see these much any more! Very pleased with how the interior came, many hours with the steamer, leather balm, tooth brush, upholstery cleaner and shampoo etc - even the roof lining, that isn't saggy or ripped (shock horror) has come up nice and so far the stench of dog and being sat for 2yrs seems to be dissipating thankfully! Next on the agenda is the mechanics. She can be a bit of pig to start when left overnight, once started she seems fine for the day then but a fresh lot of filters are on the cards tomorrow and we need to see if the glow plugs are working as they've been wired to a separate switch. If all that's sorted and working 100% then a tidy of the engine bay will be next, a degrease, clean and some satin black paint will be order of the day. So with all of that in hand, MOT day tomorrow so we'll see how it gets on. I'm quietly confident to be honest, we've gone through a pre MOT and it all seems good, no ripped dust covers or cv boots, all seat belts working, no real bearing free play on the wheels, all lights working etc - so lets see shall we! Stay tuned.......

Well today saw us tackle more of the oily bits today. We went through most of the truck, all the fluids done. We was going to do the atf fluid but when we pulled the dipstick out it the fluid was still a crimson colour so it's been done at some point. The box is lovely and smooth so we've decided to leave well enough alone. But we did the rest, air, ,oil &; fuel etc: Air filter was grubby to say the least!! I noticed the belts are starting to fray and the steering belt is loose so looks like new belts. We've steamed the rear carpet and seat belts as they're mining to be honest, soaking them over night in cleaner and hopefully refit towards the end of the week. We're going to collect the sister car tomorrow so we'll see what we're dealing with when it's back here. main objective is to try and get it running and sell it as a project or donor vehicle I think. And more good news - it flew through the mot today!! The only fly in the ointment is that the alternator doesn't seem to be charging properly. So we'll be fetching it off to test and maybe refurbished. But it's a good news day today generally!

So this morning was interesting in the snow and ice, went on a mission to pick up its identical twin: I don't mind admitting that I had a couple of sqeaky bum moments, in Stourbridge there was a lot more snow and ice than there was in Kidderminster, it was proper dicey, and where the pajero was it was in a place called hillside to give you an idea.... Suffice to say that it managed it fine, didn't load it the best to be fair as we were on a hill and the brakes aren't great which didn't help but the paj took it all in it's stride, albeit a little slow compared to what I'm used to towing with it did it no problem! Anyway we now have this: Not bad inside actually if a bit grubby, I will be having that steering wheel: Some bad pox in the bottom rear quarters though: It's possible it might be saveable if you fancy a project, the rear of the chassis has been welded up though but although scabby the rest of the chassis seems solid if ugly. After a few puffs of easy start and some fresh diesel it did fire into life for the first time in 4 yrs and moved under its own steam which is awesome really. The glow plugs are shafted so it was a bit hard to start but warmed up she runs nice it has to be said. The alternator is charging on this one so it's donated it to the nice truck: I'm now left with this gap now: What a curse word of a job to do that is! First time doing one of these and it's tricky, but after pulling the one out I got the other one out in about 40 mins. Not one of Mitsubishi's finest hours putting it down there! I've pulled all the belts off it too as they're worn so fresh belts needed. So if anyone needs a donor mk1 or fancies a project truck/off roader then let me know :-)

You have done very well indeed there...!!!! What a save...
My Dad had one of these waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back when and I loved the dials on the centre of the dash... I thought I was in an aeroplane!
It is amazing to see what people will dispose of these days but it is also amazing to know that there are people out there that will rescue these relics and give them a bit of love...

Good save (x2)
What product did you use to get rid of the dog/damp smell apart from the steamer. Need to refresh my 'rocco that's been sitting damp (with the occasional mouse visit) for too long that hopefully shall live again soon

Adam made up a mixture of interior shampoo/carpet cleaner and put it in my steamer, comes up a treat especially on the headlining as that's where a lot of odours linger. Just steam the seats and the carpet, then rub/dab with a damp cloth and keep rinsing out. When it's dried out a little I use some odour eliminator just for good measure, seems to do the trick to be honest!
Mods might want to move this into the rides section?
