When I saw the thread title I had to check I wasn't browsing one of my other specialist forums.... My Mercs all leather inside, looks nice, smells nice. I don't really think there is a decent alternative for cars. I hate leather sofas though, cold, slidy, you just can't get a good slouch going on imo. (Cow) leather is a waste product from the meat industry so until the vast majority go veggie then there will always be loads of it about. Personally, I'm with Mercdan up there, I'll eat any meat, mostly because I'm an apex predator and have evolved to do so. Denying yourself yummy meat makes Darwin cry or something ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png)

Depends on the period of the car and the car itself. Obvious really. Most modern cars can often look as good with synthetic materials as leather. But this is RR, we don't care about them..... Something from the 80's, unless it is truly high end, cloth looks just as good, or more honest. A metro with leather just looks so contrived... Something from the 70's, unless it is a true luxury car, velour, or even cord, can look and feel pretty cool. Pre 70's and I think more often than not, leather just has more impact visually and looks period. A few exceptions to this. Saab 96, VW Beetle, Citroen 2CV for example I wouldn't try and pimp up with leather. Funny how so many on here judge leather seats on practical terms. Ooh, it gets too hot or too cold. Yet, with so many of our cars, we do so many things that are not practical at all, all within the remit of the aesthetics. Why do we suddenly get all sensible when it comes to how warm our bum is?

Don´t like leather either. Wouldn´t pay more to have something I don´t like.
Did have leather seats in a 2004 KA which I bought right from the show room once as I needed a car quick, but added seat covers in order to not stick to it in summer or freeze in winter.
If I really needed the smell of leather, a steering wheel or/and shift knob would do it for me.

i don't mind leather in the right car but some more modern cars it just doesnt look right and isnt as decent quality i guess it all depends on the style of the seat aswell,
i wouldnt really want it in a daily though,

To be honest, when I was shopping for my W210, black leather was the ONLY option I would consider. Mainly due to me wanting to use the car occasionally for work, so the 'wipecleanability' was a major factor. (That and not seeing dirt on it!)
It also comes in handy when cleaning up after the kids have been in it for the weekend!

I loved the cloth seats in my old Dolomites, like sitting on a sofa, downside is going roung corners you tended to fall out of the seat! 1979 Triumph Dolomite 1850HL by RSdesignUK, on Flickr Saying that, the Celica seats are lovely, comfortable but firm and supportive! Toyota Celica GT by RSdesignUK, on Flickr Not a fan of leather seats, they are wipe clean though, if thats your thing.... ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

I like leather, but after sinking into the soft moth eaten velvet & Tricot velour seats of my early Lancia Beta for the first time I will definitely be restoring it with more cloth. ![](http://stevewakefielddotme.files.wordpress.com/2013/11/dsc_2243_6x8.jpg) ![](http://stevewakefielddotme.files.wordpress.com/2013/11/dsc_2245_6x8.jpg?w=529&h=705) So much nicer than the firmer vinyl or leather seats that could be ordered. The design of the seat is also a factor though. A poorly shaped leather or vinyl seat can leave you sliding around all over the place.

I prefer half-leather with the seat and seat back in fabric.

Surely everyone loves leather? Leather vs velour? Let's let resale values decide, a car with leather is always more desirable. There are however some poor leather interiors, I had a mk 2 Mondeo Ghia X company motor that had some platic looking seats, although in their defense they did blow air con round yer jacksy. Best leather in a sensible price car, got to have been my Alfa 156, however top end a friend had a DB9, must have been a whole herd's worth of leather in there. The smell was amazing. New owner could specify no cost velour on Ghia X - a few about but rare ![](http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/uploads/cars/ford/5428410.jpg) Always thought Primera T -spec had plasticky leather ![](http://poitoucharentes.angloinfo.com/showpic/?ID=207117)

I never understood the "I am a vegetarian so won't have leather" stance.
I'm tee-total but I still happily use alcohol wipes and hand cleanser.
As for leather/cloth, it matters not. The price dictates what I buy, not the seat facings.

I prefer the comfort of velour but the longevity of leather. The Mondeo I gave to my sister with 260k on the clock still has the seats looking superb. A friend's MkII with velour seats were looking quite tired with half of the mileage. Alcantara seems to give the best of both worlds as well as half leathers ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) .

No offence intended, but is that the case for ALL vegetarians? Or just those that don't like leather? Serious question by the way.

All vegans, and most vegetarians (the ones who do it for the animals rather than diet)
Getting back to the topic, I once went with a friend to look at new cars and the offer at the time on a new proton (maybe a Gen-2) was leather interior for free, and it looked like someone has clad the interior of the car in cling film, it was horrid stuff.

I'm a fan of leather if its decent quality. I remember being in a late spec Saab 9000 which had beautiful soft cream leather. On the other hand I've been in some cars with horrible plasticky hard shiny "leather" which isn't nice at all and I would rather have cloth.
Can't whack a bit of 60's vinyl purely for the intoxicating smell.

When I worked at Rolls we had a Lwb Spirit with special order cloth. We had it 2 years in the showroom. We couldn't give it away. So we bought a written off Spirit for the interior. Got it Connolised. Sold a fortnight later. There's a place for everything. Except in a Rolls.
